I started listening to Gamecock Football in 1965. I don't recall it being called the CockPit then, but I very clearly remember Paul Dietzel who took over as coach in 1966 used to refer to the Stadium as The CockPit a lot. I remember when the university started the drive to put artificial turn down in the stadium, he used to say The CockPit needs this badly, and on the coach's show Sunday morning, he'd talk about the Fund Raising Drive called "Carpet The CockPit". Also remember Jim Carlen, and Joe Morrison calling it The CockPit all the time. I think it was late in Morrison's era when the university wanted to downplay the name CockPit, and you don't hear that name much anymore, but to me Williams-Brice will forever be The CockPit.

I'm gonna say it was officially called The CockPit in 1966 (when Dietzel took over)

I've noticed that alot of folks are now calling wb the cockpit. Personally, I love the nickname, but how are we gonna get everyone one else on board calling it the cockpit? I think it needs to be a media blitz! Some how we need to get the local media to begin referring to it as the cockpit! I feel like once that happens then everyone else will catch on. Anybody have any ideas??? Just don't want the nickname to go away!

The nickname has been with us for decades. I don't think it is going anywhere. However, I agree. We need to make the university start using it more often in an official capacity. The announcers in the broadcasts back in the 1980s would refer to it as the Cockpit. Now, no one does.

It all starts with us. Just like Spurticus' Cockpit thread, we fans have to use it more often. The more we use it, the more prevalent it getes. Then it will pick up with the University.

We purposefully named our football board the Cock Pit in March 2005 when we started for this purpose. Hopefully, just like The Sarge, people will use it consistently.
