As the race neared a close, Dale Jr.'s mind began to wander to college football during multiple yellow flag periods.
Dale Jr: (lap 315, yellow flag) "Anybody know if the Gamecocks beat Georgia tonight?"
Hmiel: "No, but we can find out... (several laps later)Georgia 17, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, 15..."
Dale Jr: "Damn. I thought they were gonna win that game. They missed a field goal and an extra point so that hurts. But it's pretty good against Georgia. They're a good team..."

been a fan of his since he first started..
quick story....
Back in 2001 when I was a Pike at USC...we had Carolina Regionals and he was supposed to be an honorary Pike and we had a whole cerimony set up for it, but the week before Sr. was lost at Daytona...so we were unable to do it that weekend. But he is a good friend of a bunch of my Pike brothers at UNC-C since that is where he grew up, but I have known for a couple years that USC was the team he followed, cause most of his friends were UNC or CU fans growing up and he wanted to be different.

Anyone see this on Dale Jr's website:
Monday, Oct. 24
Yo! I’m back from Martinsville, which on Sunday was NASCAR’s version of a rowdy mosh pit – beatin’, bangin’, raisin’ hell and having a good time. It’s what I refer to as a “charity” race, because you can bet the local charities and non-profit organizations – having seen the carnage and aftermath of 19 cautions – were lining up their requests for scrapped sheet metal. Seeing as how we were involved in two wrecks and even a pit-road “bumping” incident, I’m sure we had a few pieces to contribute to the cause. Anyway, we survived, we had a good time doing it, and if that wasn’t enough, I was given a really cool piece of memorabilia Sunday morning at the Budweiser hospitality appearance – an authentic University of South Carolina football helmet, signed by head coach Steve Spurrier. I’ve always been a big Spurrier fan, even before he coached the Washington Redskins. I’ve had the opportunity of meeting him a couple of times, and he’s always been really cool. So when Mark Bennett, a longtime Bud guy, presented me with the helmet, I was really pumped. And if you were in the garage on Sunday before the race, you might’ve seen the helmet resting on top of the Bud car as it went through inspection. Yep, that’s mine! To Mark, thanks again for the helmet.

I have seen it in some races that the sponsor of the car would be from several universities. Could you imagine the pub that would give to the Carolina? Darlington would be a great place for that to happen... Ithink there is still a race to be run there this year.

From Jr's website journal:
"How cool is this: Early last week Coach Joe Gibbs stopped by my motorcoach to give me a bag full of Redskins stuff, one of which was a helmet used in an actual game (not sure by who, but who cares). I couldn’t believe it. I was on cloud-9, just like a kid on Christmas morning. Joe Gibbs is my hero, and perhaps the coolest human being on earth! But it gets better – On Sunday, Coach Steve Spurrier of South Carolina came by to wish me luck in the 500. He brought his wife and son with him. After chatting for a few minutes, he drops a big gym bag on the ground and says, “Here’s a little gift.” I opened it up, and it’s full of Gamecocks hats, visors and – yes – a #8 jersey with “Earnhardt Jr.” on the back of it. Man, that’s awesome. A guy shouldn’t get this lucky in one week, but I did and I’m extremely grateful. Thanks Coach Gibbs and Coach Spurrier!"

Earnhardt to honor dad with replica car
By JENNA FRYER, Associated Press
Last updated: 9:06 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2006
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One object in any NASCAR driver's rearview mirror that may have appeared closer than it actually was: Dale Earnhardt's black No. 3 Chevrolet.
Especially if "The Intimidator" was gaining.
Gentlemen, start your trembling. There's an Earnhardt back in black.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will mark his late father's birthday this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway by driving a likeness of the No. 3 car his father made famous.
Junior's trademark red Chevy will be painted predominantly black, with white lettering and silver and red stripes. Junior will still use his No. 8 -- his father's No. 3 has not been on the track since his 2001 death.
"The car looks good, it's a cool way to honor my dad," Earnhardt said Tuesday. "It's going to be a lot of fun to be behind the wheel of that car, and see the reaction it gets from other drivers on the track."
The tribute is part of a larger salute at Dale Earnhardt Inc., which is celebrating Earnhardt's Thursday night induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame, his overall accomplishments at Talladega and his 55th birthday, which would have been Saturday.
All three DEI cars will have the same paint scheme, which Junior views as an appropriate celebration of the seven-time champion. He seemed uncomfortable in February marking the five-year anniversary of his father's death, but birthdays bring happier memories.
"His birthday is something I do enjoy pointing out or celebrating or recognizing because that was always a lot of fun with him," Junior said. "When he was getting a little older we was always thinking about what his real age was. There's some things that come and go without a blink of an eye. But there are other things that come and go that you want to point out and you want to recognize and you do appreciate."
Junior's car will be the most dramatic of the three DEI entries. After all, it's at Talladega and Daytona -- the two biggest and fastest tracks in NASCAR -- where Junior bears the closest resemblance to his father.
Dale Earnhardt was the greatest at restrictor-plate racing, especially at Talladega, where he scored 10 wins and notched the 76th and final victory of his career in October 2000.
Junior inherited the skill required to work the draft. He has five victories at Talladega and two at Daytona.
But none compare to his father's last victory, when he charged from 18th place with five laps to go to cross the finish line first.
"I was running second thinking I was in a position to try to get me a win, and I can see him and his line formed on the outside coming up, getting closer and closer," Junior said. "Every time I look in the mirror, he'd moved up a few more feet toward us and was coming on. So everybody was sort of in a panic mode as if, `Wait a minute now, this thing ain't playing out like we had in mind.'"
Junior said drives like that Talladega victory were the ones his father cherished.
"He would do all kinds of stuff like that, make big comebacks or big, great saves or just crazy passes," Junior remembered. "Everybody always said he could do a lot of things with a race car a lot of other people couldn't. He'd take pride in those things personally.
"Never would get out and jump up and down and brag about it. But when it was all said and done and over with, and everybody went home, he would take pride in doing those things. I think that comeback was one he really, really enjoyed."

LIKE MANY NASCAR drivers, Dale Earnhardt is a fan of college and pro football. Dale Jarrett follows North Carolina football, and Jeff Burton is a huge N.C. State fan. Earnhardt’s allegiance goes with whatever team Steve Spurrier is coaching.
This past October, as Earnhardt climbed into his No. 8 Chevrolet before the Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 in Atlanta, he believed the stars were aligned for him to win.
“It would be a good day,” Earnhardt said to his crew. “Spurrier had a good win yesterday. That was awesome. South Carolina beat the Tennessee boys. My sister (Kelley) had a brand new baby girl Saturday morning at 11:37. So it’s been a good weekend so far.”
While adhering to caution flags during the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond this past September, Earnhardt constantly checked with his crew for updates on USC’s game that day at Georgia.
On the Saturday of qualifying for the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix, Earnhardt sat in front of his laptop, pounding the refresh button as he followed USC’s victory over Florida on the Internet.
“I was so happy to see Steve take that job,” Earnhardt says of Spurrier and USC, “and I just continue to watch each week and hope that he can continue to improve that team.”
A mutual admiration exists between Earnhardt and Spurrier. It is a relationship that began from afar, and during the past couple of years has developed into a friendship. Spurrier says it has to do with their shared love of athletics.
“I love competition,” Spurrier says in a mild understatement. “People who compete, we all admire other guys who compete, who do it the right way. We’re all in the same business as competitors.”
As with many who grew up in North Carolina, Earnhardt became a fan of the Washington Redskins. For reasons he can’t explain, Earnhardt also began following Florida and Florida State in the college ranks. The more he watched, the more he liked the coaching styles of Spurrier and Florida State coach Bobby Bowden.
“I definitely enjoyed both of their offenses and how high-powered they were,” Earnhardt says. “I liked Steve’s kind of go-for-the-throat style of coaching. I feel like that’s how you should play every sport, and he’s a good inspiration for me.”
Spurrier also took a liking to Earnhardt. Upon hearing while at Florida that Earnhardt was a fan of his, Spurrier sent Earnhardt several autographed footballs. While admittedly not much of a racing fan, still began to follow Earnhardt’s travails on the track.
When Spurrier left Florida in 2002 for the Washington Redskins, well, there could not have been a bigger fan than Earnhardt. With no team to follow when Spurrier sat out the 2004 season, Earnhardt was thrilled to jump on the USC bandwagon this past season.
Kerry Tharp, the former USC sports information director and now the director of communications for NASCAR competition, invited Spurrier to attend the Pepsi 400 last July in Daytona while Spurrier was vacationing in nearby Crescent Beach, Fla.
“You want to meet any of the drivers?” Tharp remembers asking Spurrier.
“I’d like to meet Dale Jr.,” Tharp recalls Spurrier saying. “I’ve always liked the way he drives.”
The two talked outside Earnhardt’s trailer in the Daytona infield for about 15 minutes. At one point, Earnhardt told Spurrier he no longer had a college football team to follow.
“Well, you do now,” Tharp recalls Spurrier saying. “You can follow the Gamecocks.”
Shortly thereafter, Earnhardt sent Spurrier a helmet that he wore in one race, and Spurrier reciprocated by sending Earnhardt a USC helmet. Then Spurrier again attended a race, this time the Daytona 500 in February.
The two talked about USC’s surprising season, and Tharp says Earnhardt was well versed in the names of USC players, particularly that of running back Mike Davis. This time, Spurrier brought along USC shirts, hats and a jersey No. 8 with Earnhardt’s name emblazoned on the back.
Upon his arrival in Columbia, Spurrier said he needed to land a couple of big-name recruits and others would follow because USC would become “a cool place” to play football.
In Earnhardt, Spurrier landed a big-name fan for USC. And, of the USC jersey that he has worn on a couple of occasions, Earnhardt says, “it’s cool.”

The Associated Press
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier attended his second consecutive Pepsi 400 on Saturday and said he has become a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
"I've talked to him briefly before some of the races the last couple years," Spurrier said. "For some reason, when I was coaching at Florida, he like the way we played or whatever. I sent some autographed footballs and he sent some autographed stuff He sort of pulls for the Gamecocks (now) from what I hear, so I sort of pull for him."
Spurrier also said he admired the way Tony Stewart drives and added that his youngest son was a big Jeff Gordon fan. "Just watching these guys go at it on the race track is exciting," Spurrier said

Dale Jr.'s support for Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks has gone dirty. He's trash-talking now. Perhaps it was sheer luck that Junior met famed fisherman and avid Tennessee fan Bill Dance the day after the Gamecocks stunned the Vols 16-15 in Knoxville, but Junior didn't let the opportunity go to waste. Extending a handshake as he crossed the stage at driver introductions at Atlanta, Junior leaned in and said, "That's too bad Spurrier had to beat up on your boys like that!" The big ol' slimy grin on Junior's face was enough to show Bill Dance that the comment was absolutely soaked with sarcasm.

If anyone has XM, could you tell us about the conversation after Jrs. show. Thanks and Go Cocks!
WIS just did a little segment about it. They (WIS) interviewed Jr. while he was at WIld Wings and asked him what he thought about the UGA game and he talked about it a bit. I am sure someone can dig up that video somewhere.

Earnhardt Jr., Spurrier Friends, Admirers
POSTED: 4:12 pm EDT September 6, 2006
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Turns out two of the most popular sports names in South Carolina are pretty good friends, as well.
South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier is a big fan of NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. while Junior has become a huge fan of the Gamecocks.
The two got together Tuesday night when Spurrier took time from preparing for No. 12 Georgia on Saturday to be a guest on Earnhardt Jr.'s satellite radio show.
"I'm a big fan of Steve's and pretty much the Gamecocks," Earnhardt Jr. said.
Spurrier wasn't always much of a race fan. However, after former South Carolina athletic spokesman Kerry Tharp took a job with NASCAR in 2005, Tharp asked Spurrier if he wanted to visit the Nextel Cup race at Daytona International Speedway, the Pepsi 400, in July of that year.
"I'd like to meet Dale Jr.," Tharp remembered the coach saying.
The two hit it off immediately, although neither had to do much work to connect.
Earnhardt Jr. said he'd always admired Spurrier and was gleeful when the coach left Florida to coach Earnhardt's favorite NFL team, the Washington Redskins.
"If I had researched the situation," Spurrier told Earnhardt, "I might've gone to a different (NFL) team. But I did like everybody else, I went with the guy who gave me the most money."
Taping for the radio show, to be aired at a later date, was packed at the Wild Wing Cafe northeast of campus, split between those wearing Gamecock caps and shirts and those with Earnhardt's No. 8 or racing logos.
Fans cheered Junior's entrance, then yelled even louder for Spurrier. Earnhardt Jr. wore a Carolina cap. "How y'all like that hat Dale's got on?" Spurrier shouted and the fans screamed again.
The two have sent knickknacks to each other, too. Earnhardt Jr. gave Spurrier one of his racing helmets, while Spurrier gave Earnhardt Jr. a South Carolina football helmet.
Spurrier also was at the Daytona 500 and the Pepsi 400 in Daytona again this year.
Tharp said Earnhardt Jr. wanted Spurrier on his weekly radio show, "Unrestricted," which is broadcast on XM Radio. So Earnhardt's people spoke with Tharp at Bristol Motor Speedway last month and Tharp called Spurrier, who agreed to appear only if the taping could be held later in the evening after he finished football duties.
Tharp says Earnhardt Jr. follows South Carolina games when possible on the Internet. "He's become quite a fan," Tharp said.
One of the things Spurrier says he enjoyed the most about racing the was the reliance on teams. "When drivers win a big race, they all start hugging their crew members," Spurrier said.
Earnhardt asked Spurrier if there were any other Nextel Cup drivers he pulled for. Spurrier said his youngest son, Scotty, likes Jeff Gordon, bringing several boos from the crowd. "I think his girlfriend makes him," the coach said.
"I guess that's the way it goes sometimes," Earnhardt Jr. said.

This is an awesome article. I wish I had known about the taping, I would have loved to have been there. Very cool to have two of my favorite sports personalities be friends.
P.S. However, Scotty Spurrier needs to grow a set and choose a driver for himself, hopefully one a little less GHEY than Jeff "FLAMER" Gordon.

I hope this is the right forum. Dale Jr. was on the Speedvision set with Hammond and Elliot Sadler, and he was wearing a black "Carolina" hat. Had a garnet palmetto tree on the hood, and had what appeared to be Steve Spurrier "Signature" on the side. Very cool! I've got to have one of those hats! Anybody w/any info on how to get one will be appreciated.

I can't remember what the formal name of the show is. It's the show that they always do at whatever track they happen to be racing at. Usual guys on the show are Hammond, McReynolds, and sometimes DW. They have Nextel cup drivers on as guests to discuss the upcoming race and what-not. They always have a crowd of the local "Yahoos" holding up home made signs in the background. Jr. was discussing his radio show and how they do it, the whole time wearing our hat. Says they usually set up on an old couch with a cooler full of beer and tape the show in about 1-1/2 hours. Very cool to me because I'm a huge Earnhardt family fan.

I think the black hat on the right is the one Spurrier gave him. It's part of the Steve Spurrier collection deal.
