Hello, ladies! I just wanted to pass along a tidbit of information. I was looking at random things for sale on eBay yesterday and saw a Bakelite bracelet listed for over $100 and wondered "why?", because it is a piece of plastic afterall! So, I started doing research and found out that vintage bakelite, celluloid, and lucite jewelry are not only gaining popularity, but value as well. I even went on a couple of vintage jewelry websites and found a faux tortoise shell bracelet being sold for $50. I think I bought one of those in the 1980's for $5.00! Of course, these are all vintage pieces that I found for sale. Bakelite was being made beginning in the early 1900's, but most of the pieces I saw for sale were made anywhere from the 1930's to the 1980's. For you younger ladies, your mom may have some of these pieces floating around in her jewelry box, so don't let her throw or give them away without doing some research on them. There could be a piece of plastic in there worth over $500+ depending on the age and authenticity of the piece. Believe it or not, there are actually ways to test if a piece of jewelry is real bakelite and there is a market of fakes being made, which are mostly sold in flea markets and on-line auctions (yes, like eBay). But when somebody goes to the trouble of making faux pieces of something and trying to pass it off as the original, then there must be something to that! You can Google the info on how to test pieces if you are really that interested.

Anyway, I just thought I'd pass along this info. It never hurts to hang on to things, especially plastic jewelry in this case. You just never know what could come out of it.
