Hey brother, long story short, found a 15-20 foot snake in my back yard yesterday. I have the picture on my computer and my phone, but cant figure out how to shrink it or download it here, so you can Identify. Can I get an email or something to send this picture to you. This thing is a monster, docile, didnt catch him, still in my yard somewhere, but he is freaking HUGE. Like, I can eat your truck huge.

I could have killed it, but something this big, I have a lot of respect for. I dont kill snakes just to kill them, unless they are poisonous. This one isnt and he was very docile. BUT FING HUGE. He could eat my house if he really wanted. And besides, you are right, if I shot it, it would have pissed him off.

I think its a Boa Constrictor that someone let loose and now he is in my yard, taking up residence. Normally be ok with this, no rats, and shit hanging around...but I have a 3 year old....

an African Rock Python. ... Has to be either an escaped pet, or someone
turned this thing out because they couldn't keep it anymore. It's not
native to this area

catching those at all. ... Definitely needs to be removed by someone who
has expertise doing it.... The local Animal control will probably kill it...Call
the Columbia Zoo and see if they can send a guy out there to catch it
and control it without killing it. .... they are sluggis and slow, but quick
striking and have teeth that can cause some sever lacerations...the
danger is that something that huge can get one coil around you and
you're dead without help !
I'd also call the police to get them to find out where this thing came from
and who let this thing go..

I called Animal Control, they dont do snakes they said. WTF right? I can kill this thing if I have to, but I really dont want to. He was docile, non aggressive, but shit, I have a 3 year old that plays in the back yard. Is there some way to trap this SOB? Really need some help here before I just end up shooting him. Think maybe DNR can help me get rid of this? City of Columbia is pretty worthless about this situation.

GEEZE ... what'll need to happen, is that it will have to kill a 4 or 5 year
old kid, and then the Police will send detectives to find out where it

DNR is a good choice. The zoo probably won't catch and keep it, but
they will probably want to capture it, and remove it to someone who
will relocate it or house it out of harm's way and away from the public

Call the local news staions. Not only will you get famous for a while
but they might know people who can help with finding and removing it.
If nothing else, they can run the story and MAYBE get the local
cops off their asses

It's one of the world's largest sites for studying Reptile and Anphibian
species. I'm Positive they would come and get it out of your yard without
Killing it.

they generally stay in a small area and feed.

Best thing here though is that it won't survive in this part of the
country. A string of cold winter days will kill it. Also (HOPEFULLY) there's
no mate for it around here. The conditions in So Florida are Ideal for them.
Mild / Warm winters, the Everglades is a protected area, so the food
source down there is endless, and they had tons of Exotics dumped into
the Glades over the years, so there were mates to these Phytons and
Large Boas.

The danger here is immediate. If this thing gets hungry, small dogs,
or Fluffy the Cat is simply an appatizer. It'll look for larger food and
a small child or larger animal like the family dog will come up missing.

Reason I asked, is that I'm still beyond understanding why someone would
turn something like that loose in a heavily populated area. The woods
around there are dotted with Small swampy areas, and if someone were
looking to release a snake like that because they couldn't keep it any
longer, that would be the Ideal Spot. I'd like to think someone near there
was keeping it penned up, and it escaped, but I really think it's more along
the lines of someone just looking for a place to dump a "once cool pet"
because it got too costly, or too dangerous to keep and didn't have the
heart to kill it. .... there's also the Congaree National Forrest about 10
more miles down the road and would have been a place to dump it...
it might have remained out of sight down there unitl it died of (god
forbid) found a mate or survived the winter(s).

Me either. .. Same with people who keep venomous snakes. The majority
do that kind of thing on a whim. They see it when it's small, and think it's
cool and buy one to impress their friends.....Then it grows up, and they
can't control it or keep up with the cost of feeding it and they decide too
late that it was a bad idea.
Larges snakes like that, or stuff like Monitor Lizards, or Venoums snakes
are Zoo animals, or places for research centers to use for milking and
controld study. .... The ONLY people who should buy these things as
pets, are the very small percentage of people who are experts and keeping
and raising them, and have no small children or A lot of family around
that could eventually end up a victim.

I think that picture was Photoshoped years ago. I've seen it before around
the net. ARPs are Big ass snakes, and I think the snake beside the fence
is probably real, but the mouth open wide, the teeth biting the fence were
enlarged by Photoshop to make it look even more bad ass (if that's possible).

I figured you lived close to there when you said it was near the
stadium. It makes me even more positive that this is a snake someone
dumped over there on purpose. They've probably seen that area a lot,

I can understand someone's "fascination" with certain kinds of exotics,
simply because I have been Facinated with snakes since I was in my
very early childhood, but over the course of growing up, I realized there
was a responsibility to keeping unusual aniamls not normally considered
"Pets". When my parents said NO, you can't keep a snake in this house,
there was never another question about getting one then... When my
Ex Wife didn't want me to have one because of her fear of them, as
well as my (then) 2 year old son, then I never brought the question of
getting one, up again. There are other people to consider when you
want something like that just for the sake of "Fascination". Even for
the most harmless of them (like myself). When things did work out for
me to get them (recently) I did so with the understanding of the care
and feeding of them. I will not get in over my head or attempt to get
and keep something that can potentially put an end to my life, or those
around me.

IMO, (IF this is what happened here)..people who turn animals like this
loose should have to face criminal charges IF the worst happens and
the animal kills or severly injurs someone. I think people should have to
register these kinds of animals when they purchase them, and be held
accountable for what the animal does while in their possession

Do you live anywhere near that large wooded area around Heathwood
Hall School, or the Huge Farm area near there ?

Reason I asked, is that I'm still beyond understanding why someone would
turn something like that loose in a heavily populated area. The woods
around there are dotted with Small swampy areas, and if someone were
looking to release a snake like that because they couldn't keep it any
longer, that would be the Ideal Spot. I'd like to think someone near there
was keeping it penned up, and it escaped, but I really think it's more along
the lines of someone just looking for a place to dump a "once cool pet"
because it got too costly, or too dangerous to keep and didn't have the
heart to kill it. .... there's also the Congaree National Forrest about 10
more miles down the road and would have been a place to dump it...
it might have remained out of sight down there unitl it died of (god
forbid) found a mate or survived the winter(s).

Between work, and staying up on the conversation in this thread, I
completely forgot that AC sent me some pics of this thing this morning
when I first saw his thread !

I put them on Photoshop, and lightened them up some to get a good
idea of the pattern. I don't know too much about imports, but from what
I've seen in the pics, and doing quick checks on the net, it looks more
like a Burmese Python. This snake is dark colored, but the pattern on it
from what I can see is more consistant with a Burmese than an African
Rock Pyton, or a Reticulated Python.
