Well, since you asked, my favorite is pork and mustard based while a close second is pork with vinegar sauce. I like good bbq of all types. Pretty much any meat, slow cooked over wood coals can be like heaven on earth. A lot of the pleasure comes from the cooking. Sitting around all day (or night) drinking beer while the meat is cooking is one of the finest southern traditions.

Pork with mustard all the way...go back to North Carolina with your vinegar lol jk...I have officially boycotted Maurice's BBQ, and anyone who thinks his is the best needs to branch out a little bit. For instance the BEST BBQ I have ever had (and I'm somewhat of an officianado) is from a small restaurant in Springfield, SC named Goodland BBQ. Now I'm not saying drive all the way down there (though I would highly recommend it), but take the time to try out the Jackie Hites' (Batesburg) and the Antley's (Orangeburg) of the world and not so much Shealy's and Maurices. Though Shealys will suffice for Maurice's anyday. Maybe its just me but 13 dollars for a bbq sandwich and fries is ridiculous when you can pay 8-9 at some of these mom and pop joints and get the best bbq you've ever had, and all you can eat of it.

I am from Cola. I was born at Lexington medical.

My family eats vinegar, ketchup, and mustard. We don't discriminate. If it is good we will eat it.

I don't like vinegar though. I'll take mustard-based on my pork and ketchup-based on my brisket and chicken

My family is originally from Charleston; although, I'm in Atlanta now. I like pork with mustard based sauce, and used to love The Little BBQ Hut on Rosewood. Farm Boys in Chapin makes some good BBQ. There isn't much good BBQ in Atlanta, which makes the city suspect imho ;)

In Nashville last weekend, Jack's, which is right down on South Broadway was pretty good.

I like both, but if I had to chose I would lean towards mustard based. I went to Doc's BBQ on Shop Rd. 2 days ago and it was some of the best bbq i've ever had. The best is at Shealy's in Batesburg though....too bad it takes a long time to get out there.

BBQ up north means pulling out the grill and cooking burgers and hot dogs. Trust me - I've lived up there.

I prefer pork with vinegar but the mustard sauce is good too.

Best I have had around Greenville is Buckey's.

I was out in Texas and they have the beef BBQ. It's different but still good. You just can't think of it as pork BBQ.

Pork w/mustard is the greatest.

Tomato is OK in some situations, vinegar I'm not a big fan of.

Around here its either Mutts or Sims, neither that spectacular, Maurice in cola, and the last BBQ I had was Jack's in Nashville. Had the pork with their mustard.

Northern "BBQ" is burgers and dogs, and beef doesn't make good bbq imo.

Anybody ever have Charles Kovacik from the GEOG dept for a prof at USC? He's the unofficial BBQ king of SC. I had him for one class that was really interesting. He had a map of SC he made broken down by Mustard, Vinegar, Tomato and Ketchup based sauces. What was neat about it was how he explained how certain BBQ regions were started by their settlers, ie. Germans (mustard) in the Midlands, Scots-Irish (ketchup/tomato) in the upcountry and English (vinegar) in the lowcountry. There's a lot more to it than that, though. His handouts about "SC BBQ history" are one of the things I've kept from college.

Incidently, I like them all. Shealy's is probably my fave. My last year at USC, my roommate and I would raid the couch and variuos other crevices once a month to get enough change to split a meal at the Maurice's on Elmwood!

i've never been much of a fan of mustard, no matter what they put in it to make it taste better (ie mustard bbq sauce).

i lean towards vinegar/pepper then tomato based is close second. but like many replies, it's all good imo.

as far as places to go. (or NOT go) maurice's is blasphemy! shealy's is decent i guess if i'm hungry and right down the street. little pigs is pretty good, the best in the midland's is farm boys in chapin. hudson's in lexington is close.

The best barbeque is usually in those little hole in the wall places in small towns. We have a great place in Swansea called Countryside. The barbeque is pork with mustard based hash. The fried chicken livers and gizzards are incredible. The ribs are so big they are actually heavy to lift. The meat just dripps off of them. There is lima beans, rice, sweet potatos, and sweet tea. For desert there is home made cake and bananna pudding. I need to stop now because they are only open on the weekends and I will have to wait to Friday to get any!!! If anyone wants to ever join me there just let me know!!!!

Guys, I am a newbie to the website and learned about it through a friend of mine and this is great. I must enter the BBQ talk. I am from the Pee Dee area and the Best Que is School House in Scranton ( even WIS awarded it the best), it's black pepper/ving based and all the fixins. Chavis Que in Lexington is good and it's close to my house. It's $8 for buffett. It is mustard based and like all mustard based que its OK if your hungry for BBQ, but for the price and quality of the sides and fixins its a good deal. Granny's in Irmo is good too and resonable in price. Hudson's has priced themselves like Maurices ( over priced for little reward) but they serve beer. I love to take road trips for BBQ and welcome all new places.

Anybody had Smithfield's BBQ in NC? When I lived in Eastern NC I never got around to trying it, even though I drove by one of their places every day.

Where the hell have I been. How did I miss this thread! My pops and I have issue when it comes to BBQ. We used to schedule family trips to hit BBQ spots at lunch time, dinner, etc.

I've had the 'que from most places in Eastern NC. There is a place in Wilson, NC that is incredible. However, I was lucky enough one time to enjoy some BBQ made by the South Carolina Swiners. Those guys were up in Charlotte for the Blues, Brews and BBQ festival and a friend of mine introduced me to them. After the competition was over they let us make as many plates as we wanted. Absolutely the best 'que I've ever had.

Aside from those guys, Shealy's does it up pretty good. Their meat is moist and the sauce gives it a great pop.

I'm most familiar with Lexington, NC. If you've not been to the Lexington BBQ Festival you should go. Only problem is that it falls in October so you have to hit it on an off weekend for USC. While the famous "Lexington Barbeque" is really good, the most recent place I've been to up there is "Tarheel BBQ." I think it's out on hwy 61 headed over towards the west side of Winston. Excellent 'que with just enough pop to the sauce. Actually, it had so much flavor that I didn't even need the extra sauce they brought out.

Mustard all the way. Shealy's is the best all around. Im surprised no one has mentioned Wise's in Jalapa. Buffet all you can eat for about $7-8.00.

This is the first time I got on today and every thread has something to do with BBQ. WTF is going on, haha. I hate southern cooking but Im not gonna lie, I do enjoy some BBQ. I had some great stuff the other day at this place in Mt. Pleasant. They had both mustard and vinegar and they were both outstanding!

I refuse to go to Maurices though because he is incredibly racist and that upsets me. There was a marketing study that went on at USC and he managed to look like an asshole and prove his true colors.

Al's upstairs in cola is another asshole. Sorry to vent a little but I do not respect or support businesses where I know stuff goes on.

Pork w/ vinegar. you can't beat it. if you're ever in Lexington, NC, there's a little mom and pop restaurant there called...you guessed it, Lexington Barbecue. Best BBQ in NC.

Here's the deal...I'm going to let all of you in on a little secret. Boycotting businesses is just stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have worked in advertising for a number of years and have had gotten to know all types of business owners but there is one thing most of them have in common. They are cocky, and the majority of them only do what they want to do. They run their business not thinking of their customers but how they would do things themselves. By not buying their product/service they are not getting your "message" because to them, you are not a customer and you are not wanted to be a customer in the first place.

That being said, Maurice's is the best you can buy, I live in Charleston now and miss it (even though I have his brother's which is great).
But the Barbeque that I make is the best. Shoulders and butts smoked at 190o to 210o for at least 12 hours, my mustard based sauce, PERFECT!

Mustard based Barbeque is South Carolina, just like the palmetto tree and cresent moon, just like tall pines in the midlands, just like hot slap your mother days, don't even argue that anything else is even close!

:woo::woo:WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!:woo::woo:

:lol:are you kidding me? "Not thinking of their customers" when it comes to their food and prices sucking is what I think of first with Maurices- I could have possibly understood if you said "Maurice's isn't so bad" (eh, nevermind I couldn't understand that either) but you actually said the BEST. i have seen it all. he isn't refraining from going to Maurice's JUST because it costs $12 for a meal...that is just an extra reason, but most people avoid it because it tastes like crap.

Ladies and gentleman, this man knows what he is talking about! You're the first on here to mention Goodland BBQ and I just feel sorry for the one's who haven't had it!

Bam! Again this man is talking my talk- Hite's is MUCH better than Shealy's, people just hear about Shealy's more because it is advertised & marketed as well as having their sauce in stores. Antley's in Orangeburg...another big time score there- Orangeburg is a crappy place and it is the best thing about that city!

Nice post!

I had way too many people over the years tell me . ."Try this resturaunt, you'll love it" or "This is much better that _____" . . . but when I tired it, it just wasn't as good to me as was advertised.
When I find a place I like, I stick with it. As for BBQ, I've eaten and Smokey Bonz, Maurice's, Big Ts, Jackie Hites, Hudson's Smokehous and Sony's . . . all on people's advice that they were "Better".
So far, none of them's beat Shealy's. Headin' down there tomorrow night in fact for some BBQ. Reading this thread has my mouth watering already !
