Lets do a poll, this isn't for best team, but the team with the most swagger, attitude, confidence, that intangible.

Without a doubt, 1987 (coincidentally also my pick for best overall team)
Swagger wise, I liked our 2001 team

they had so much swagger in '84 that they all got drunk and got in way too late the night before the navy game. you gotta be careful with that swagger.

what about the 2000 team. they won 9 games, and after beating 10th ranked uga, they had a serious swagger the rest of the season. but hands down it would have to be our 84 team. they had more swagger than any other team. being ranked number two, and beating some of the biggest names in football, gives those guys the trump card as the team with the most swagger. think about that fireant defense. it was nationally known! they had a monster swagger.

We were 9-3 in 2001(lost to Ark, Tenn, and Florida). That team had swagger(beat UGA at UGA), But the '87 team tops them all.:football:

I would have to say the 84 team. I was there at the Clemson game and they came back from being down 21-3. That is swagger. They were in every game and probably won have won the NC had they prepared and taken Navy seriously.

Hmmm, none of the Taneyhill years are listed?
My vote would have to be for the 1992 team when Steve took over. Obviously not the most taleneted, but the confidence level was out the roof. After the first couple of wins no one in the country thought we would lose. People in California were wearing Taneyhill caps with a fake mullet hanging out the back.

Sorry I don't have the age that most of you guys have. Anthony Wright and Tanneyhill were the first quarterbacks that I can remember. So I can't voice my opinion on these older teams that had "swagger"
But man, That mullet alone had enough swagger for the whole team. You can't out perform the glorious mullet!

Here is more evidence that the 1992 had the most swagger.
The team had lost their first 5 games of the season, there was no hope, the season was already being written off. Then steps in a true freshman guaranteeing wins if he gets to start at QB. He does and they win. The team rallys around him and goes on to do something no other Gamecock football team had done since 1903 and no team has done since. They beat Tennessee. They did not beat them because of talent, remember this is the same team that lost their first 5 games including East Carolina, Kentucky, and Arkansas. That team won their last 5 out of 6 games almost completely based on swagger, confidence, and momentum. The only blemish on the second half of the season was a 5 point loss to Florida. Five points! Only 2 Gamecock teams have came that close to beating Florida since 1940. When those players stepped on the field they did not expect to blow a big lead in the 4th quarter or allow a team to get a first down on a 3rd and 22 play. This team played to win and did not think they could be stopped.

You make some great points GH. I think that was the best second half of a season ever at Carolina. Their swagger was sky high for half a season. The first part there was no swagger though. Players revolted(of all people...Tommy West and Miles Aldridge calmned the players). The offense was never that good even with Taneyhill. The defense really stepped up and they had some MAJOR swagger those last six games. But, if I had to pick a full season...I still have to go with '87.

Taneyhill only attempted 6 passes in the first 5 games the team lost that year. Not sure what you mean that the offense was not even good under Taneyhill?

A few moments of swagger:
Signing your name to the tigerpaw...hitting a homerun when you throw a touchdown pass...getting a football player who played baseball to 'pitch' the ball to you so you can crank it out...standing on the bench taunting the tiggers...Penny flying across the field with a judo kick that makes the cops from the stands run out onto the field to break up the fight...warming up in one jersey, then coming out for the game...BACK IN BLACK! I remember the one game our band had swagger...yes I did say band. When we beat tenn. because we stopped them on the two point conversion, our band walked in front of rocky top and played rocky top...they played it once more when the game was over too!

I've been thinking this for a while, but almost afraid to say it. Those of us old enough to remember the 80's remember the "swagger" that the team had when JoMo was the coach. Remember how our team had the feeling that if you mess with us, we'll kick your A$$? The all black and almost mysterious way that they had. There was never any fear that we would lose or even be close. It was more than confidence, it was daring, bold, exciting!!!
The fans had the same attitude. WB was our house. Nobody came in here & talked trash to us. We weren't taunted like we have been in recent past.
This year's team is catching the swagger. We've been down in games & fought back. We didn't win most of them, but we fought back, we didn't roll over & piss ourselves and lose the game. I saw this most clearly in our team this past weekend at clemson. Spurrier going for it on 4th & 2 at our own 39. He knew that if we didn't make it, we'd get more shots at it. He's getting confidence in our team and they in him. We're very close to being that confident team that plays with no cares. I'm very excited about being the force to be reckoned with again!!!!
Let's win the freaking bowl game & get ready for 2007!!!

I thought the same thing when Spurrier went for it on 4th and 2 at our 39. I think that was sending a clear message to our players as well as to Clemson. Spurrier has the swagger, and it's spreading.

i don't wanna change them, thats the point it's called swagger or cockiness and shows the other team you think u can move the ball as u will.

I might get slamed for this but I think last year. Not the last 6 games but if u think about how close we came to beating LSU and if we would have done that I think that even with Jap hurt we could have had a monster season. The vanderbilt game was just the killer for the season! Over overconfident is what led to the end of what could have been a great year in gamecock history.

I say '87, without a doubt. Swagger isn't something you suddenly have after you've won some games, or had a high ranking. It's what you have before all of it happens. In '84 we didn't go into that season thinking we'd win 10 games or be ranked as high as #2 in the nation. Prior to '87, I thought our team had a feeling that it had the talent to do some great things that season.
I remember that team losing to Nebraska like it did, and Morrison chastising the team, saying that they were much better than that. Nebraska was a top-10 team at the time, if I remember correctly. We then peeled off 6 straight victories, out-scoring our opposition 230 - 39!! We took #2-ranked and eventual NC Miami down to the wire before losing 20-16 in the Orange Bowl. That was the last regular-season game we've played against Miami, and our school administration said at the time that it would be the last time forever. The fight that broke out after Daniel Stubbs slung Todd Ellis to the ground after the play was already whistled dead had a lot to do with it:

To me, the 84 22-21 comeback was pure guts. That's my favorite game all-time. Individually, the 84 players weren't much, but together, they were an awesome bunch of overachievers.
The 87 crowd was a bunch of bad asses. If the NCSU game had been a boxing match, it would have been stopped in the second quarter.

Too many people are voting on their favorite team or the team that they think was the best. I realize that not everyone was around for all of these teams, and, you have to vote based on your own personal knowledge, so that will skew things towards the later teams. Personally, the '69 team is beyond my scope...and really the teams up to '80 are...but, I can recall a few very cocky teams in the late 70's...teams that would smack the ball out of your hands if you held it up in celebration...but, the team with the swagger that beats all others in the list is 1984...the 1987 team was my senior year...and if they had won that game at miami after the fight (I still hope that stubbs rots in hell!) I would have voted them...but that '84 bunch...there was something about them that when it comes to 'swagger', trumps everyone else.

I can't believe no one mentioned the 1933 team. Geez, three straight shutouts over Climzun, sixth straight winning season, win against Auburn in Alabama and these guys were in college eating on a regular basis at the height of the Great Depression.
You don't think they had more swagger than a Panzer commander?

I was a student during 84 and 87. No doubt it was 87. The year prior, usx went 3-6-2 with a tie vs CU the prior year. Everyone knew that 87 was going to be a good year.
We ran a run a shoot offense in 86 and 87. However, in 87, we also could run out of a straight I formation. Our team had balls. They destroyed NCSU 48-0 in the most dominating game I have ever seen. (including 63-17)
The 84 team had a magical quality about it. It was almost as if, wow...is this really happening?
The 87 team was more of, this is happening no matter who likes it.

Have you noticed that any of their players that go pro usually turn out to be trouble makers, allways gettin into shootings and bar fights
and remeber that player that got shot at his apartment a few months ago
It was drug dealers who shot him because he didnt want to pay them
