Summerville 49, Rock Hill 7
SUMMERVILLE — A.J. Green moved into the No. 2 position on the all-time high school receiving yardage list Friday night. But Green and the rest of his teammates won't rest until Summerville is No. 1 in the state.
The 6-4 senior caught nine passes for 154 yards and two spectacular touchdowns in only three quarters of play as the second-ranked Green Wave buried Rock Hill 49-7 in the first round of the Division I-AAAA playoffs. Green passed Christopher Fulmer of Nitro, W.Va., on the all-time list for career receiving yards.
Friday's performance gives Green 5,182 receiving yards for his career. He also returned a punt 33 yards for a touchdown.
"I'm not worried about receiving yards," Green said. "I just want to soak up this win. That's why I play. My mission my senior year is to help this team win the state championship. I won't rest. I'll go out on the field Monday, work hard and hopefully have another good game next week."
The Wave advances to play Fort Dorchester, a 24-21 winner over Goose Creek on Friday night.
Green wasn't the only star on a perfectly crisp night for football as a crowd of approximately 5,000 fans at McKissick Field roared in approval.
Quarterback Reid McCollum completed 16 of 22 passes for 328 yards in the first half and scored on a 1-yard run. McCollum had his best game of the year, completing 22 of 29 for 418 yards in three quarters of play. Junior receiver Laquan Gilliard also had a big game, piling up seven catches for 154 yards as the Green Wave upped its record to 11-1 and ended Rock Hill's season. The Bearcats finished with a 4-8 record.
Green caught a 22-yard touchdown pass with 6:44 left in the first quarter to make it a 7-0 game.
The Green Wave scored four touchdowns in the second quarter to break open the game.
"We did a good job of throwing and catching the football, didn't we?" Summerville coach John McKissick said after gaining his 554th career win. "A.J. played well, Gilliard played well, and so did Marcus Morris. Reid continues to impress and get better."
Gilliard caught a 40-yard pass to set up McCollum's plunge and Green made a juggling catch in the end zone for his second 22-yard TD reception of the night. Willie Thomas scored on a 1-yard run with 3:23 left in the half. Green put an exclamation point on the Wave's second-quarter outburst with a 33-yard punt return.
Rock Hill managed 124 yards in the first half. Backup quarterback Jonathan Meeks ripped off a 64-yard run on the Bearcats' second possession to move the ball to the Summerville 8. But Branden Millhouse picked off a pass at the goal line and returned it 52 yards. Rock Hill picked up 43 yards passing on its final drive of the first half, as the Green Wave was in a prevent defense.
Rock Hill coach Joe Montgomery was impressed with the Green Wave defense.
"Who wouldn't be? On offense, they have good wideouts, a good quarterback and an offensive line. And A.J. might be the best in the country," he said.
But all Green is worried about is making his team the best in the state.
SV — A.J. Green 22 pass from Reid McCollum (David Behr kick)
SV — McCollum 1 run (Behr kick)
SV — Green 22 pass from McCollum (Behr kick)
SV — Willie Thomas 1 run (Behr kick)
SV — Green 33 punt return (Behr kick)
RH— Jordan Copeland 31 fumble return (Brandon Berger kick)
SV — Daniel Edmondson 7 run (Behr kick)
SV — Theo Simmons 6 pass from Andrew Hancox (Behr kick)

Let's hope Reid continues to get better and better with each game. It's encouraging to see him having his best game of the year in the proverbial "most important game of the year" (as each week passes, the next game become the most important of the year until they win the championship).

Thanks, Foggy.
He has very little mobility. A little less than Chris Smelley. He's not comparable to any of our QB's as far as arm.
He's got a stronger arm than any current Gamecock, but he has to work on his accuracy.

NO way his arm is stronger than Garcia's. Come on. My bet is, once Garcia starts playing, Reid is gonna ride the bench. Not even in the same class.

If SGs arm isnt stronger than RMs we could be in trouble next year...
And thats not a slight on Reid, but I have seen him play a few times, and he has pretty good vision and good pocket prescence with better than avg arm strength and mobility I liken to Blake's ...
I also hear that SG puts so much on his passes we are currently trying to teach him 'touch' not 'velocity' ...
Regardless, RM will have plenty of time to build arm strength. barring unforeseen injuries, he wont see the field until 2010 as a RS Soph

RM doesn't have a stronger arm that Garcia....but he has plenty of arm.More than anyone else other than Garcia.I think RM will be very good in college.Hopefully he can sit back for a few years...learn the playbook.Get used to the college speeed of the game.Get a few years under SOS

Garcia does have the arm - AND LEGS - to lead us to greatness. This is why I suggest when Garcia is a RS Sophmore we will put a real product on the field that is capable of winning the SEC.

He had 9 TD passes and they were all NOT to AJ. In fact, out of all of their big-time receivers, AJ had the least amount of catches & yards. A lot of his throws were perfectly timed & perfectly thrown all over the place. Crossing routes, dump passes, deep passes he threw them all. Definitely not one dimensional. I winder if Spurrier gave him a call last night to congratulate him. Would be nice...

SUMMERVILLE — Records were shattered Friday night as Summerville quarterback Reid McCollum completed 29-of-47 passes for 518 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the Green Wave to a school-record-setting 78-47 playoff victory over Fort Dorchester in front of more than 9,000 fans.
McCollum's nine touchdown passes were the most in a single game in state history, according to Palmetto's Finest, and the 78 points broke the Summerville school record of 75.
Marcus Morris was the sizzling QB's main beneficiary, as the senior receiver hauled in 10 receptions for 242 yards and five touchdowns. LaQuan Gilliard added 10 catches for 141 yards,

while A.J. Green caught six passes for 80 yards and three scores.
Summerville will host Gaffney, a 21-14 winner over Sumter, in the lower state finals next Friday.
"We needed a big night, and we took care of business tonight," said McCollum, who is heading to Columbia to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks. "The coaches told me I had nine touchdown passes. That's crazy. We had some long balls, some receivers open. They wanted the ball tonight."
Morris made a name for himself in the big rivalry game.
"Everyone knows about A.J. and LaQuan had a big game last week, so it was my turn this week," Morris said. "Beating Fort Dorchester is big. College football has South Carolina vs. Clemson. In high school, it's Summerville vs. Fort Dorchester."
Summerville had 588 yards in total offense and 166 returns yards. Fort Dorchester had 481 yards in total offense and 211 yards in returns, as the teams combined for 1,446 all-purpose yards.
"That's the most points I've ever seen in a game and I've been a coach for 56 years," said Summerville coach John McKissick, who gained his 555th career victory. "Our game is throwing the football, so I was pleased. I wasn't so pleased about the defense."
Trailing 40-36 at halftime, The Green Wave went into overdrive to push its record to 12-1 and send the Patriots home with a 9-4 record as McCollum threw five touchdown passes in the third quarter.
McCollum found Matthew Galbreath open in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 10:00 left to take a 43-40 lead.
The Patriots fumbled the ball at their 37 on their first possession of the half, and the Wave recovered. Two plays later, McCollum completed a 20-yard pass to Green to move the ball to the 8. After an incompletion, McCollum threw an 8-yard bullet to Green to push the lead to 50-40 with 9:12 left in the third quarter.
Fort Dorchester fumbled the kickoff and the Green Wave recovered at the Fort 10. The Wave stuck again on the first play as McCollum completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Green to make it 56-40 with 9:02 left in the quarter.
The first quarter was about as fast and furious a 12 minutes of football that you will see. Fort Dorchester rushed for 219 yards in the quarter to take a 26-21 lead. Summerville did most of its damage in the air as McCollum completed 9 of 14 for 160 yards.
The huge crowd had just settled in when Dante Ravenel raced the opening kickoff untouched for a 90-yard touchdown in only 11 seconds, and that set the tone for the game.
Fort Dorchester quarterback Galen Bennett completed 5-of-6 for 164 yards and three touchdowns. He carried 18 times for 192 yards. Dwayne Scales rushed for 120 yards and Ravenel had 105 yards rushing, including an 80-yard touchdown.

I have said for some time now that I think AJ stands out because of his maturity over most of the competition he plays against. He does have very good HS skills but I question whether he has topped out and will not be that big of a contributor in the college ranks. Time will tell.

Not a flame, but is that rumor or do you know that for fact?
I know some guys on the staff/team and Ive never heard them say that.
Plus, if he was that more mature, I would have expect him to have filled out more. Hes 6-4 170 soaking wet.
Thats very thin and he needs to bulk up or he will get jammed in the SEC.

I don't think he will, but he could considering his outstanding play in the playoffs. A lot of the services will still credit a lot of his success to Green, so they may not move his rank up. But it could happen and I think he should at least move up to a low 4-star.

I think he'll move up in the Pro-Style QB rankings into the Top 10, but fall just short of hits 4th star. If Bowens keeps his stats moving up, I would think he'd gain his 4th. Shaq Wilson is another excellent prospect to move up.

Not really a good attitude to have when it comes to recruiting. These players may end up being great one day but they clearly aren't the best in the country. You're suggesting we settle for them, I suggest we let Spurrier go through the evaluation process and decide who to offer.
You obviously don't know the Hillary family then. If you have to "settle" for a Hillary, count your blessings.

I hate to say bad things about any future gamecock, but I watched him play in the state championship game today and he couldn't complete a pass for his life. He had very good pocket presence and a good arm, but was not accurate and was having problems reading a sneaky Byrnes defense. Maybe I'm wrong and I hope I am but I don't think we offered him for any other reason than a chance at AJ Green.

Maybe I'm wrong and I hope I am but I don't think we offered him for any other reason than a chance at AJ Green.
Reid is a very good person, Maybe he just had an off day. I am sure Coach McKissick would not have used him if it was anything more than that.

I don't think he will ever see the field...from what I have seen he has stunk it up when he played good teams...I hope I am wrong though

You obviously don't know the Hillary family then. If you have to "settle" for a Hillary, count your blessings.

Reid did struggle today. However, Summerville's offensive game plan (?) didn't help him at all. They had no clue how to utilize Green...Why no bubble screens or hitches? Everything was down field to him and he was tightly covered.
I'll tell you who was impressive throwing the ball.Byrnes Soph QB.He on the money all day long. That kid's a player.

I am glad to see someone with a little sense finally agreeing with me on something. Their game plan did not suit him at all.
