We have a very unique and special opportunity to interview one of the greatest personalities and legends of the Gamecock community. We have interviewed other former Gamecock greats and done the research ourselves. But this is too incredible of an opportunity, and we want all of cockytalk to contribute. So here is what we are doing. Post a question you would like to ask Steve Taneyhill and we will pick around 5 of them to ask him.

Is the relationship between him and USC good again with Spurrier as the coach and what did Holtz do besides turning down Adams that made the realationship strenous in the first place?

I seen an article somewhere (sorry, no proof) where he said, of course he was dissappointed, but was glad to see Gaines doing very good like he (Taneyhill) knew he (Gaines) would and tried telling Lou.

What was your favorite Carolina Football moment?
Which players do you keep in contact with?
What's the biggest change in today's USC football program versus the one which you were a part?
Do you make it to many games still?
What's your impressions of Blake Mitchell?
Is there another player on your team that may be a sleeper like Gaines?
Do you think fans put too much emphasis on beating Clemson?

As a senior Carolina won a bowl game in Brad Scott's first year as a head coach. Four years later the team was 1-10 and followed that with an 0-11 year after Scott was dismissed.

There's no argument there was a complete collapse of Carolina football and everything you and your teammates built together.

Can you offer any insight into what happened to Carolina under Coach Scott and what can be learned from it?

And a followup question:

Can you offer any insight into Coach Scott's tenure as head coach that may alleviate any of the animosity many Carolina fans feel for the job he did (or failed to do) while working at the University?

Here is really something you need to say. Ask him how he always manages to get everyone in the city that he coaches in, to be behind his team so much. Cambridge and Chesterfield were dead to football until he arrived.

When Brandon Bennett went over the top against UGA for the win in '92. I think you had to just scream "Same Play" when it failed the first time. They knew it was coming. Did Sparky tell you to go with the play again or is that all you had time to do?

I'm just glad you're in Chesterfield. My children grew up there. You have made a small town people very proud of who they are. Keep up the good works. I'm sure you will go far.
Oh yeah, You planning on staying in that area for a while? Would love to see you in Columbia also.

1. What was it that enabled you (talent or attitude) to step into the SEC as a true freshman quarterback, beat out the starting senior QB, and lead the Gamecocks to victory over a #15 Mississippi State team and beat the "big bully" of the SEC at that time, the Tennessee Volunteers?

2. What is your current relationship with Clemson coach Brad Scott? What is something that you could tell Gamecock fans about him that might make us hate him a little bit less?

3. Other than you, which player on one of your Carolina teams stood up and took on a vocal leadership role? How important is that for a team?

4. What was the emotion of the team after the first ever bowl victory in school history?

5. Do you remember that time in Five Points when you got into a shoving match with 5 ft 6 inch, 165 pounds Corey Bridges, and lost? Good times, everyone laughed about that later!

I got into this thread too late...great questions. The one thing about Tanneyhill was that from the moment he stepped on the field, everyone around him became better players. Was that because they had confidence in him, he had confidence in them...what intangible allowed his presence to raise the level of the whole team?

I have always heard that high school football in Pa, Texas, Calif, and FLA is alot better than in other states. I would like to ask Steve how he thinks high school football in south carolina compares to high school football in PA?

USCharleston
04-10-2007, 01:37 PM
A little off topic.
Steve was an assistant coach at West Ashley High School a few years ago (I think in '04) and he had them boys firing on all cylinders. They had a QB that transferred from a private school and he threw the ball everywhere. When Taneyhill left the QB transferred back and the team sucked again. They did a big story in our local newspaper about Taneyhill & his accomplishments around that time also.

Here's a quote from one of the articles:
"Cramer developed under coach Hamilton last year, and the coach added former South Carolina quarterback Steve Taneyhill to his staff in time for the 2004 season. By the end of the regular season, the 6-3, 195-pound Cramer was one of the top junior quarterbacks in the state. He had a three-game stretch in which he tallied 979 yards passing and 14 TD passes."

Taneyhill is the real deal at coaching!

You are one of the all time great Gamecock personalities. Do you think, in the modern climate of college athletics (with rising expectations, higher ticket prices, greater media scrutiny, and increased corporate sponsorship), that there is room for more on-the-field player-personalities like yours was at that time?
