USC Keeping Interest Up With Sommers
By Phil Kornblut
WR Brian Sommer (6-1 193) of Alcoa, TN said USC continues to keep up the strong recruiting effort. "I get a letter almost every day from them and I talk with coach Spurrier Jr. almost every other day," Sommer said. "They are very interested and they are still my favorite. I thought I might narrow it down to USC and Tennessee, but after visiting Ole Miss, that boosted them into my top schools. South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama are all in the mix. Alabama is going to offer me but I haven't talked to coach Saban yet. I'm supposed to talk to him this week." He is also getting interest from Colorado, NC State and Louisville. Sommer is going to the Nike camp at Georgia this weekend.

On Recruiting
Published: August 1, 2007
WR Brian Sommer (6-1 198) of Alcoa, TN has been favoring USC for much of the recruiting process, but he said Wednesday night he's no longer favoring any school. "There's no clear favorite anymore," Sommer said. "I'll narrow my list down a couple of weeks into the season and then decide on official visits. I won't decide until after the season, and it might not be until Signing Day." Sommer said he received a text message from USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. Tuesday night "just telling me my name is still on top of the list." Sommer visited Kentucky earlier this summer and plans to attend games this season at USC, Tennessee, Alabama and others. Those three have offered along with Ole Miss, Colorado and Kentucky. He is also hearing from Louisville, Michigan, Purdue, NC State and Florida.

We haven't lost the edge. From what he's said every school is equal. No clear favorite. When he comes for his visit, we need to have the energy level high...at every game for that matter. Remember Cliff Matthews at the Auburn game? That was the game that clinched it for him because of our energy level at home games. Remember us fans have a vote in helping recruiting these kids also by raising hell at Williams-Brice. Let's rock da house this year guys.

You said it brother!! Maryville is the truth!! Even though I live in Loudon when my son starts school , that is where I want him to go! Also George Quarles has to still be the coach, this man can take an average team & turn them into a force to be reconed with!! I see him coaching at the next level by that time though.

Man, you ain't LYIN...Quarles is a damn good coach...they were sooo good this year...theres a guy on the basketball team with me at TWC from Maryville, he was like all-state in football and all that when he was there, when Maryville just started gettin good...I look for them to win it all again this year...Stephen Shiver, from what a friend that goes to Maryville told me, is supposedly bigger, stronger, and faster then Maples...I know that kid can hit on defense...

When will these kids learn? They are throwing away their god given talent! do you think we will continue to recruit him? I say no, not w/ all the issues we have had lately. I'm sure UThug will though, they have a 4 strike policy that was put in place for Coker a couple of weeks ago!

I'm not bashing, I 'm just saying they are given a talent & doing stupid stuff like smoking/selling whatever & ruining chances to do something as awesome as playing div I football. I hope this is a wake up call for him, but I would say after this & his coaches comments his stock will surely drop drasticly. Given the past couple of years here at USC I'm sure that SOS will be more selective w/ recruits as far as them being responsible young adults, someone he wants to represent Carolina football & the University. I would love to have Brian in garnet & black, I live up here & have gone to his games to watch him play just b/c he was a recruit & wanted to show him some support from a Gamecock. I'm just really let down & dissapointed. Good luck Brian whatever happens w/ this.

Yeah its just awful isn't it...God forbid any teenage boy smoke a blunt....We need to recruit all mature responsable citizens that never do anything wrong like you....Spurrier has to learn to find the boys that are mature and respondsable at 15....Who cares about the kids or winning...Lets just make sure the news media doesn't say anything negative about us....ROTFLMAO

OK, one of you called him 16, now you are saying he is 15. Read the article, he is 18. And yes you should recruit good kids(crazy concept huh?). Especially with all the arrests your school has had recently, you should be even stricter on this type of thing. If getting arrested isn't a warning sign for a recruit then what is?
You might think it's ok for a "teenage boy to smoke a blunt.." but to me, that is not what I would be looking for in a future college football player or student at my University, and yes I would stop recruiting him, unless there is something to this story they are not reporting.

Alcoa's Sommer dismissed after drug arrest

If the Alcoa High School football team is to win its fourth consecutive Class 2A state championship, it will do it without the services of standout Brian Sommer.
Sommer, 18, was dismissed from the team after being arrested at school Tuesday because marijuana was found in his black Cadillac during a police search. The senior wide receiver/defensive back was charged with simple possession of a schedule VI substance.
Sommer was being held in lieu of $750 bond pending a hearing Thursday at Blount County General Sessions Court.
"He's dismissed from the team," said Alcoa coach Gary Rankin. "He'll never play another down at Alcoa High School."
According to a warrant obtained by Blount Today, Alcoa police were requested by Alcoa personnel to do a K-9 "sniff" of vehicles in the parking lot. The warrant said the K-9 dog was "alerted to a black Cadillac driven by defendant Brian Sommer. The defendant was brought to the vehicle and gave school officials the keys to the vehicle. The search revealed marijuana all over the front and rear seats."
Sommer missed the first half of Alcoa's season opener at Spring Hill for an undisclosed violation of team rules, but Rankin said that punishment was not drug related.
Sommer has been offered scholarships by Tennessee, Alabama, Colorado, South Carolina and informally by Kentucky. Last season, he had nine interceptions and caught 33 passes for 416 yards and five touchdowns.
"You hate to see kids make mistakes," said Rankin. "But he's not a kid. He's an 18-year-old man. He knows right from wrong and he should suffer the consequences.
"We got the same rules for five-star college athletes as for kids that can't play. That's one thing you can't accuse me of is treating everybody different. I'm not a star-system guy. I'm a big team guy. Everybody's treated the same, whether they run a 4.4 or a 5.4."
Rankin said he could sense something amiss with Sommer this season from the senior's lack of production on the field. In his two games played, Sommer had three catches for 57 yards and zero touchdowns.
"I don't think he's been playing well," said Rankin. "It's pretty obvious. It doesn't take a coach to look at the Maryville game and understand that he shouldn't even have been out on the field with some of those great players. He's been going downhill for a while. Apparently, he's having some problems, and it was showing in his play."
Alcoa (2-1) is off this week and resumes play Sept. 21 against Booker T. Washington. Rankin said quarterback and Kentucky commitment Randall Cobb will fill in at defensive back, as would junior Chase James and sophomore Jaron Toney.
"Randall Cobb is as good as defensive back as there is around," said Rankin. "We'll find some people to step in. We've always done that. We've always prepared people. That's one thing I've always done a good job of, if nothing else.
"We'll move on and keep this thing moving just like it is."

i would love to know which person who posts on this thread has ever smoked pot, and who did it when they were in high school...I BET ALMOST EVERYONE! and they found it all over the seats, which was probably mintue remains from a while ago - I'M NOT CONDONING HIS ACTIONS BUT HE IS 18 YEARS OLD AND KIDS WILL MAKE MISTAKES. JUST B/C WE GOT AWAY WITH IT WHEN WE WERE 18 DOESN'T MEAN HE IS WRONG FOR GETTING CAUGHT. i say keep recruiting him and let him know it will not be tolerated, he won't have the luxery of QR and be able to go to PTI. if he gets busted again it will stick and spurrier would kick him off the team, same with QR now
When the HS Coach doesn't want him on the team any longer, that's good enough for me to pass on him. The "lack of production on the field" also isn't going to get me knocking down his door to come here. Doesn't sound serious enough about the game based on that write up. Carolina doesn't always have to be "Reclamation U".
...and no, believe it or not, I never smoked in HS or college or after, never wanted to.

He's not 15..he's not 16...he's 18. He's a high profile athlete that's being recruited by several SEC schools. He'd already been suspended from half of his first game because of violating team rules. He had marijuana on the front and back seat of his Cadillac. His HS coach had noticed he's been declining.
Now, based on all of that, do we keep recruiting him? That's up to our staff, and they've likely already spoken to his HS coaches. Kids do dumb things sometimes, and they can be excused for it just because no one's perfect...but I'd be surprised given our recent history of players getting in trouble if we don't back off.

I have to take the Coach's advice on this one. Sounds like the Kid has issues other than just smoking a blount. We continue to win we won't need to take any chances to get players of his quality. I am sorry, I would rather give his scholly to JB Shippy.

Well said Curt. He has broken team rules that garnered a suspension, and now has broken the law that got him kicked off the team. His coach has noted the decline and cannot even recommend the kid. The kid might have all the talent in the world but if I were the staff I would not go near him, especially given the problems our team has had. If Spurrier and staff would not go after Noel Devine last year, with all of his problems, what makes you think that he would go after problems like this guy.
it is possible to win with upstanding citizens that dont do drugs. It is not like there is a dearth of recruits out there, nor are we desperate to fill the team. I am sure that we can find quality recruits without persuing the ones that are carrying baggage like this kid. We can and should do better.
