Gamecocks First Offer For Greenwood ATH
By Phil Kornblut
On Recruiting
Published: April 25, 2007
Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning visited Greenwood High School Tuesday to talk with coach Shell Dula about ATH Jay Spearman (6-1 205) and TE Jordan Gary (6-3 250). "Clemson is very interested but has not made an official offer to to Spearman," Dula said. "South Carolina has offered. Virginia Tech, Mike O'Cain really likes him. A lot of people are recruiting him as an athlete but I think he's going to have a heck of a chance as a quarterback. He attended the Jerry Nettles camp. I think he's going to play quarterback. I think he's still wide open. I think he wants to see what people say." Spearman attended the Nike camp at Georgia last weekend. He also has visited USC and Clemson. He is also getting interest from Duke, Appalachian State and North Carolina. Last season Spearman rushed for 1111 yards and 17 touchdowns and passed for 1108 yards and 7 scores

Gamecocks Pick Up Third Commitment
By Phil Kornblut
On Recruiting
Published: May 15, 2007
Greenwood ATH Jay Spearman (6-1 205) said Tuesday night he has committed to USC. He made his pledge to Gamecock recruiter Brad Lawing Monday night. "I've been a Gamecock fan all of my life," Spearman said. "It's a great school. It's a great team overall and a great staff. They recruited me as an athlete and I'll play either defensive back or receiver. Spearman also drew strong interest from Clemson, Virginia Tech, Duke, Georgia, North Carolina and Appalachian State. USC is his only offer. Playing quarterback last season, Spearman rushed for 1111 yards and 17 touchdowns and passed for 1108 yards and 7 scores. He's the third commitment for USC's 2008 class and is the nephew of former USC offensive lineman Andray Spearman.

I just watched his 3 highlight videos on rivals and he looks like he could be excellent at tailback or slot receiver. He reminds me of Cory Boyd, but faster. Watching his video's, I couldn't believe he was just a junior leading his team to the state title. I can only imagine what he'll be capable of after a year at our training table and weight room. They were saying that he is going to be the highest rated guy at the athlete position not the number 1 guy in the state. It seems he might be one of the highest rated athletes in the country too. He ran a 4.36 and 4.38 times in the forty at the state combine which was best in the state and also boasted a 41 inch vertical, which is crazy. He is going to be able to play multiple positions. I cant wait to see what this kid can do.

If you looked at his profile on Rivals, did yo happen to check out the 3 highlight videos? If not, check them out. I'd be willing to bet that after you do, you will come back to this thread yourself and agree that he is at minimum a 3 star, but potentially a 4 star before his Senior season is over. He qb'd his team to the state championship this past year as a junior, and was also a major part of the running game. He's going to be a good one.

I've seen Spearman play. Let me just say this, the kind of offense that Coach Dula has run the past 1/2 decade requires the quarterback to be the main guy period. The same goes with Zerrick Mathews (Marshall cornerback) and Armontie Edwards (App. State quarterback) -both played QB at GHS-. Dula would run everything thinkable out of the pro set, and the coaches would expect a great play by the qb everytime the ball was snapped. I doubt this Spearman will make an impact early, but if he can understand the offense and get his cuts down, he will be fine. I don't see him playing CB, but i didn't think Zerrick would play that position in college either.

He will start off at safety, but could see time at wideout.
I love the fact that Spurrier likes to put former qb's at wideout..it really adds a versatility to our playbook.
gotrice?
05-22-2007, 01:56 PM
The reason people aren't as high on him as they maybe should be is because he isn't going to be playing QB in college. That being said he is getting no experience catching the ball or covering so he will probably be a project player with great upside. That being said his physical ability alone merits high 3 star or low 4 star.

No I think a 6-1 player with 4.36 speed is just alot of talent and if he is coached up could dominate at CB, S, or WR.

I say Spearman's a 4-star when his ink drys on his LOI. This is exactly the type of kid the HBC wants...an athlete that can be put where we need him and where he can be "coached up." Throw in that he's an in-state prospect and apparently has a good head on his shoulder and he has everything we could want.

Jay Spearman
ATH | 6'1" 190
Hometown: Greenwood, SC
School: Greenwood High School
Region: South
http://espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/ncaa/sml/trans/2579.gif School: South Carolina
Status: Verbal
Grade: 77
Considered: 1-South Carolina , 2-Clemson , 3-Georgia , 4-Virginia Tech , 5-North Carolina
Evaluation: Spearman in the right offense and with much needed improvement as a passer could actually remain at quarterback in college, but his overall athleticism will lead to a likely move to wide receiver. He has adequate-to-good size and a thick, strong build with the frame to bulk up even more. He is clearly a better runner than he is a passer and, for the most part, is a running back under center. He shows explosive initial burst to escape the rush and is at his best when on the move and creating plays with his legs. He is most effective in the shotgun running the read-option and when he is on the perimeter. Shows excellent change-of-direction skills and the vision and lateral mobility to cut back against the grain once he breaks through the line. Despite being a taller athlete, he runs low and does a nice job of protecting his frame and not taking shots. Spearman is more explosive and quick than he is fast, and while he can make people miss and provide some big plays, he may not be that long-field, home-run threat at the college level as much as he is in high school. He has adequate-to-good speed with good burst off the plant, but you don't see much of a second gear in space. Overall, Spearman is an instinctive runner and shifty in space, which gives him some big-play capability. Needs to make the move to his full-time college position before we will see how well he performs.
Notes: Nephew of former South Carolina offensive lineman Andray Spearman. 2006: Played quarterback. Threw for 1,108 yards and seven touchdowns... Rushed for 1,111 yards and 17 touchdowns...

Spearman: I'm a versatile athlete
DUAL THREAT: USC commit likened to Newton, Jenkins
Consistency has been a common theme that South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has been preaching since arriving in Columbia.
Improving on both sides of the ball on the field and building a competitive team through recruiting off the field are the keys to winning an SEC championship, Spurrier says.
If it's consistency that USC is looking for, Spurrier didn't look very far down the road to find a player who fits that mold in Greenwood's Jay Spearman.
Spearman - a 6-foot-0, 187-pound quarterback who plays his high school ball about 80 miles from Williams-Brice Stadium - has verbally committed to the Gamecocks.

Article in Spartanburg-Herald
Recruiting services have likened him to former Gamecock quarterbacks Syvelle Newton and Corey Jenkins.
"I'm a versatile athlete," Spearman said. "I try to see the whole field, but I use acceleration and speed as my strengths."
Last season, Spearman rushed and passed for more than 2,200 yards and accounted for 24 touchdowns, while leading the Eagles to a 4A Division II state championship. But, Greenwood head coach Shell Dula says it was his 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash that did the bulk of the damage.
"Last year, he was a much better runner than thrower," Dula said. "He's worked tremendously hard to be a better thrower, but his strength is still running the football."
Spearman is following suit of previous Greenwood quarterbacks, including Armanti Edwards (Appalachian State), Sam Williams (Middle Tennessee State), and Mark Logan (Georgia Tech) as the sixth consecutive Eagle to play Division I football. However, the three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, is being recruited as an athlete by USC.
"Their thoughts right now are to probably play him in the secondary or wide receiver," Dula said. "He could also be a punt returner."
"It really doesn't matter to me what I play," Spearman said. "I just like playing the game of football."
Spearman says he has not set any official visits to date and says his commitment to USC is solid. He was recruited by Gamecocks defensive line coach Brad Lawing, but said he was also contacted by Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, N.C. State and North Carolina.
Spearman says he couldn't be happier to follow in the path of his uncle, Andre Spearman, who played at USC in the late 1990s.
"I liked the staff up there. It's a nice place to be around," Spearman said. "That's where I wanted to go overall."
I'm looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table when he gets to Columbia. He sounds confident and I'll take 4.4 speed any day of the week.

Nah....Spearman is about 6-1/6-2 and I would guess he is 210+...he's a big guy...trust me...I was in weightlifting class with him my senior year while he was a sophmore...spearman=beast...he'll be bigger than cook...and he's just about as fast if not faster than E.C.

That's not possible. He's human.

Ok so I was watching college football live and they were talking about how great Armanti Edwards is and a thought came across my mind.
Has anyone gone to see both Edwards and Spearman, in person play at Greenwood high? How would you compare them to each other? Who do you think was better?
I'd love to see Jay turn out to be a special player like Armanti. On paper, both are very similar:
They run sub 4.5 forties.
They were both QB's
Both around the same physical statureI know we got some greenwoodians on this board so speak up fellas.

the thing about armanti is that if he were at USC, we would probably have him playing safety or corner

Armanti Edwards is electric at USC, but as Captain stated, he'd be a DB or WR here. We wouldn't have even given him a chance to become one of the most exciting QB's to watch in college football.
Jay Spearman wasn't as eletric as Edwards in high school, but projects to be a better WR/DB than Edwards did. Strange, huh?

I think Spearman will be a good CB. I played baseball with Money when I was 12, and he is a lot different than Jay IMHO.

I agree that if Edwards would have come here he would have probably never taken a snap under center, which would have been a shame, so his decision to go to app. state is getting him a lot more recognition than he would have gotten here. And if we are talking about athletes playing qb, maybe we should look at Hillary because his highlights are very impressive.

Four players for App St threw passes this year. Three are from South Carolina.
One is Aramis' former teammate, Armanti Edwards. One is Aramis' older brother, CoCo.

Me and Money graduated together and me and spearman were in weightlifting together....Money is 6'1 160...very fragile looking guy on the field but will make you pay with his versatility and manueverability (he makes ya miss...a lot) Spearman is just a beast...6'1 possibly 6'2 210+ he can lift like it's nobody's business....and he is just a natural on the field...Jay won a championship while Edwards wasn't so lucky....but after our senior year they split up 4A into two divisions...putting Byrnes and Dorman (a lot of former Big16 teams) out of our league making it a whole lot easier for our side...If Money had that chance we would be 3 peating at Greenwood High too

Edwards will need to beef up if he wants to play at the next level.

I don't think they went to school together. Strom Thurmond and Greenwood High School.
