Tar Heel LB Likes USC & Clemson
By Phil Kornblut
LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 210) of Garner, NC attended junior days at USC and Clemson and has both of them among his favorites along with Georgia. "They are nice schools," he said. "I really loved the highlight tapes of both schools." Bowens has offers from the Gamecocks and Tigers along with North Carolina and East Carolina. He is also drawing attention from Georgia, NC State, Florida, Connecticut and Vanderbilt. He might attend an upcoming junior day at North Carolina. He does not have an individual leader. He plans to make a decision near the end of summer.

and it ain't us. From everything I've heard and read up to this point, we were the leader for this kid. That's not good news when the kid has a leader that hasn't even offered him.

Bowens Names A Favorite
By Phil Kornblut
LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 210) of Garner, NC said Wednesday night an SEC school is now his current leader. "Alabama would be my leader," he said. "They had big attendance at their spring game, and they are losing their starting linebackers after the season." But, Alabama has not yet offered. The rest of his top five schools are USC, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Bowens has offers from USC, Clemson, North Carolina, East Carolina, Appalachian State and Marshall. He is also hearing from Alabama, NC State, Georgia and Tennessee. Bowens will camp at North Carolina this weekend, East Carolina June 16th and Virginia Tech July 14th. He said he hopes to get to USC for a one day camp this summer. He said he is hearing a lot from the Gamecocks.

Sucks, but it may change tomorrow. Who knows what goes through these kids minds. What I do not understand is how a team that has not offered has suddenly taken the lead. I could understand a little more if they had offered. Maybe Saban has talked to him and gave the impression that they were very interested and is going to offer.
Isn't this kid a friend of Chris Culliver? Maybe Chris can get him on the phone and swing him back to USC.

Whats good for us is we have offered before Bama and that will play a factor if us and Bama end up being his top 2 and are very close when he makes his decision.
If (when) we have a great season this coming year and he sees an opportunity to another first round LB in the NFL draft (Jap), we may very well go right back up to the top with him and others again....
It is common for kids to change their minds several times.

Someone not wearing garnet colored glasses would want that. Saban has a beast of a team at Bama this year its going to be hard recruiting against them.

Tar Heels To Front With Bowens
By Phil Kornblut
LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 210) of Garner, NC said Monday night he currently favors North Carolina. "I've been there a couple of times and they have a real nice coaching staff," he said. "I know it's a great academic school." Bowens has camped at North Carolina and has no other camps scheduled. And he probably will make an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill in July. Bowens also has offers from USC, Clemson, East Carolina, Appalachian State and Marshall. He is also drawing interest from Alabama and Tennessee.

His reasons for favoring them aren't very exciting. Looks to me like he just needs an excuse to get the heck out of NC, and a good beating in the fall to the cocks could be just what the doctor ordered.

LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 218) of Garner, NC said Monday night there is an 80% chance he will commit to USC this Saturday when he makes an unofficial visit for the SC State game. "One of my former teammates (Chris Cullver) plays for the Gamecocks and he really tells me a lot about the school," Bowens said. "I really like their coaching staff. Coach Lawing contacts me weekly. He's a real cool coach. He's straight up with me. He tells me everything I need to know." Bowens said he has narrowed his list to USC, Clemson, North Carolina and East Carolina with the Gamecocks well in front of the pack. He has not scheduled any official visits and has not taken any other unofficial visits to see games.

I don't understand that assessment...Ingram, Shackleford, Sapp, Paulk and Sinclair are all doing well....We wont have the Brinleys next year...But we will be good...Both Lindsay's will be 100%...Jordan and Dustin could both be at linebacker next year...Also linebacker is a position where young guys can play early....Its absurd to suggest at this point we will have "linebacker woes" next year...At this point we don't know that Ingram wont be better than Jasper....I know Coach Nix loves everything he has seenn from Melvin

There is a bigtime MLB in Alabama we have a great shot to get....We have a decent shot with Monroe from FL.....But everything i hear thru the networks is GaTech...I do know that Larry Ford a juco DE is being evaluated to see if he can be an inside backer....Ford has great size and speed and really is a nasty bigtime hitter ala Shannon Wadley and the Brinkleys....Ford doesn't have an offer yet....He is from South Carolina and would love to play close to home...So we will see how it shakes out...Its still early...I am certain they are working some kids we haven't heard about yet....

Outside of Quinn and Page, a couple of linebackers other than Shaq and like one or two more lineman, what else do we need? I know we are after Charlest Whitlock and I believe he is going to sign on our dotted line, but are we really going after any other big name prospects? I've hear Deion Walker's name being thrown around, but what's our chances with him?
BTW: I saw Eric Norwood over at Russell today when I was getting me some friends and that boy has put on some serious muscle since last year. I told him that was a helluva game y'all played saturday and he said and I directly "I really appreciate that man". Good kid.

Bowens Commits To USC
By Phil Kornblut
LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 218) of Garner, NC, who has been favoring USC for several weeks, officially committed to the Gamecocks Thursday. "I think they have a good coaching program and are going to do good things in the years to come," Bowens said. "They are looking for speed and that's something I can bring to the table." Bowens certainly has been bringing it this season. Through six games he has 81 tackles and 4 sacks. Bowens is the second highly regarded recruiter from Garner to commit to the Gamecocks in as many recruiting season. The Gamecocks landed receiver Chris Culliver for their 2007 class. Bowens also had offers from Clemson, North Carolina, East Carolina, Appalachian State and Marshall. He's the 11th commitment for the 2008 USC class.

From Rivals free article on May 10:
Garner (NC) linebacker Reggie Bowens (http://eastcarolina.scout.com/a.z?s=47&p=8&c=1&nid=2785834) may have been the most impressive performer at the Snow Hill Shrine Bowl Combine.
He looked outstanding in drills, and at 6-2, 214 pounds, Bowens logged a blistering 4.42-second 40-yard dash, 30.9-inch vertical jump and 18 reps on the bench press.
Looks like a great pickup for us. Wonder why he is not rated higher.

Maybe. There was an NFL coach, can't remember who it was, but his strategy on defense was to build up speed, he put LB types at DE, Safties at LB, CB's to Safety, back-up WR's at CB, etc. Basically upping the speed at each level of the defense.

Reggie Bowens plays LB and is listed at 6'2 210 while Tony Morgan is 5'11 185 in their game program. Reggie didn't have many tackles last night but he was always around the ball. He has a frame to carry more weight and I can see him playing at around 230 without losing much speed. Tony Morgan plays cornerback and returns kicks on special teams. He had a heck of a night. I was five minutes late getting into the game and I missed the opening kickoff. Morgan returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown but I heard it over the loudspeaker. He also had an interception, a fumble recovery, broke up a few passes and had some tackles.
The one thing these two guys have is SPEED! They have good instincts and they close very well on the ball. I could see both contributing next year in some capacity. It would benefit Reggie to gain some weight but the talent and speed are there. Tony plays CB but he may be better suited as a FS. He has good coverage skills and appears to be a good tackler. Hopefully, Chris Culliver and Reggie Bowens will convince Tony Morgan to follow them to Columbia.
Garner is consistently the best H.S. program in the Raleigh area. I like the fact that our coaches have been able to establish relationships with their coaching staff because Garner routinely produces solid Div. 1 prospects. I think Garner compares favorable to some of the powerful 4A programs in S.C. such as Summerville, Berkeley and Gaffney. I think it only helps us that we have links to other prominent programs in NC such as Charlotte Independence and Richmond Co because they consistently produce a lot of talented Div. 1 athletes.

He is a great looking LB prospect IMO. He should see some early PT. He is a big framed kid that is athletic and can run.

USC recruit Bowens confident he'll make a difference
By KEVIN MELTON Go Upstate.com

To use an old cliche, Reginald Bowens has a nose for the football. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound outside linebacker from Garner High School in North Carolina helped his team to a perfect 11-0 regular season with a 42-10 victory Friday night against Holly Springs, recording 13 solo tackles and recovering a fumble.
On the season, the three-star athlete according to Rivals.com, totaled 100 tackles with five forced fumbles and an interception. The recruiting service also ranks him as North Carolina's No. 10 prospect and 27th overall at his position in the nation.
Next year, Bowens will look to make a name for himself in the Southeastern Conference as he has verbally committed to South Carolina.
"I've been down there a couple of times, and I really like the facilities and hospitality," he said. "I really felt at home."
Bowens committed by phone on Sept. 27 and chose the Gamecocks over Clemson, East Carolina and North Carolina.
He has not scheduled an official visit, but attended USC's game against Mississippi State and says he's solid with his commitment. He will make a second unofficial visit this weekend when the Gamecocks host Florida.
Bowens was recruited by USC defensive line coach Brad Lawing and says he is impressed with his future teammates.
"The team is coming up and doing big things both this year and last year," he said.
He also said that his conversations with USC head coach Steve Spurrier have been positive.
"I've talked to him a couple of times," Bowens said. "He's a real cool person and liked to joke around a lot."
Bowens said he likes the fact that Spurrier is willing to give freshmen an opportunity to show their talents on defense, although early playing time was not a deciding factor for him.
"It's just kind of an extra that I may get to play early," he said. "I think I can bring a lot of speed and help the linebackers cover the field."
On Dec. 15, Bowens will make his way to Spartanburg to participate in the 71st annual Shrine Bowl at Wofford's Gibbs Stadium.
He says he's happy about being chosen.
"It's a big honor to get to play in the game next month," he said.
"I found out from (coach Nelson Smith) right after the rosters were announced. I'm excited about it."
Bowens watched Saturday's game at Arkansas on television, but he was not swayed by the poor defensive performance that resulted in 651 yards of total offense by the Razorbacks. It just made him more ready to get to Columbia.
"It makes you eager to play because you know you can help out the team," he said

yea his 4.42 speed could of helped us out trememdously. hard to get to the sideline to rush up the field with a linebacker with that kind of speed which is something we have been missing. most of our linebackers are in the 4.6 range, so this is something we have needed.

Reggie Bowens, Melvin Ingram, Alonzo Winfield, Shaq Wilson
Sounds like a good LB corps for our future to me (that is if Alonzo stays at OLB and doesn't move to FS).

I've seen Reggie Bowens play and he has a nose for the football. He plays ILB at Garner but I think he will play OLB at Carolina. He's a 4.4 guy that I think he could really help us next year. He a Shaq Wilson should form a formidable LB tandem.
Tony Morgan is another prospect from Garner that I hope becomes a Gamecock. He plays CB and is a kick returner. He has legit sub 4.4/40 speed and has good coverage skills. I can envision him becoming a great DB at Carolina since he would be tutored by one of the finest secondary coaches in America in Ron Cooper.

I believe Tony Morgan will either play CB or FS for us. Either way, he'll be a good one!

Bowens, Burns Set USC Visits
By Phil Kornblut
USC commitments LB Reggie Bowens (6-2 218) of Garner, NC and DB Jarrett Burns (6-3 186) of Huntsville,AL have scheduled their official visits to USC for January 18th. Bowens is a solid commitment for the Gamecocks and Burns said he is as well though Tennessee has been talking to him and might offer. Burns said he's have to think about the Vols if offered but doesn't think he will visit.

Last i heard i think he got hurt in one of the practices. His body was worn down from coming strait from the championship game. Its too bad bc if he would of had a big game he would of probably had his 4th star by now.
Good to see he is gaining some weight. Should be at about 225 by the time he gets here.

I was watching (Shrine) and looking and saw a linebacker named Reddick who looked really good during that game. Our boy Kenny Davis looked good too. Everette Dawkins and EJA Ward were the biggest stars on D though.
225 is great for his speed.

I wish we would've gotten in on Everett Dawkins earlier too. I think he's going to turn out similar to Eric Norwood.
Reggie Bowens is going to be a linebacker like we haven't had in quite some time. He's quick and can lay the big hits.

If we can land Riddick we will have one heck of a LB class coming in. Throw stars away on these guys, they all have the ability to play right away.
