Riise's own goal ultimately sent me towards Liverpool. Only a team I could pull for would do something so horrendously self-defeating as that, but I think I made the right call. Besides, pulling for the winner is never quite as fun.

I hate to see the big(gest) money clubs both in, because I don't care a lick for either, so at this point I'm just pulling for a hell of a game. Its kind of like what the Yankess-Red Sox have devolved into these days, but I'm certain it won't disappoint.

I can't stand the fact that Grant has 0 creativity.

Drogba, Anelka, JCole
Essien, Ballack, Lampard, Makelele
Carvalho, Terry, ACole

should be the lineup

controlling the midfield in this game and having explosion of Anelka with the power of Drogba.

Terry will clean up the middle and Cole / carvalho will help stem the wing channels

Essien gives a false sense of comfort on D, he is a BAD defender.

tough game... i feel for terry... it's not his fault. if not for drogba losing his composure at the worst possible time it would not have come down to terry. and lets not forget that if not for his unbelievable clearance of the giggs shot with his head the game would not have even come down to penalties.

in all honesty, manu was the better team all game. they were better prepared. they played better together. it always looked like chelsea was going to lose. it was surprising they made it to penalties. could have easily been 3-1 or so.

that said, avram grant please leave now. you have zero imagination. also, you are an idiot. shit, i don't know anything about soccer and i know it's a bad idea to take one of the world's best central midfielders and put him at right back. when essien is patrolling the midfield he is a great, elite, world class, all everything beast of a player. he can control entire games. at right back he is barely above average. good enough to get by, but with major limitations. to ask him to go into the penalty box and mark ronaldo is just unfair. when the ball went into the air he had no chance. manu actually tried to get that match up in the air several times and essien was lost every time it went up. not his fault. avram put him in a bad situation. i can't say chelsea would have shut manu out for 90 minutes but if ferriera was at right back ronaldo would not have had such an easy time of that header.

also, lampard and ballack just don't play together well. a great coach may be able to come up with some way they can co-exist but i don't think avram can. they always get in each other's way. they want to go to the same spots. i forgot lampard was even on the field until he scored.

anyway... thank you petr cech for at least keeping it respectable. you are a beast.

ManU dominated the first half
Chelsea held their own during teh second half

Field conditions made this game an ugly match anyways.

players were slipping and using their legs to stabilize themselves WAY too often. i'm amazed no one was injured, I've played on bad surfaces like that and it is VERY easy to seriously injure yourself.

and That caution sign is the GREATNESS!!!!

Wild game. I think both sides were very frustrated with the officiating. After halftime Sir Alex was waiting at the locker room exit for the ref to give him an earful (which he got).

Both teams played extremely hard and both had their chances (actually, Chelsea had more) but couldn't capitalize until the end.

I feel for Terry. The turf was noticeably getting worse as the game wore on and the rain fell harder and harder.

Congrats to Man U. Well fought match.

Yeah Drogba messed up, but I don't know about a red card. Especially in those conditions, you just can't do that, a yellow sure, but giving Drogba a red then is a little extreme if you ask me. Also, I thought Tevez (who I loved in 2006 on Argentina) should have got a matching red for his role in the fracas as well.

But overall it was an incredible match, I watched it in 5pts at Delaneys, which was fairly loud and crowded, especially for 3pm on a Wednesday

the refs were at fault for not stopping it immediately.

they called crap fouls, and allowed the more serious ones...i.e.Tevez taking down Malouda/Makelele...I don't remember which.

there are steps you take as a referee to keep things from hitting that level and they skipped them all.

they aren't at fault per say, but they definately did not help their situation at all.

You TOUCH another player in teh face its an automatic Red, as it should be.

open hand
closed hand

the refs were at fault for not getting in the middle ans breaking this up
Vidic should hvae been sent off as well for continuously jumping into the fray even after Terry pulled him out and Cech talked to him

Cech is a good guy, but man...I don't wanna meet him in adark alley. he's huge
I think Vidic should have probably been sent off either way. I don't think he deserved a red card, but a yellow was probably warranted and IIRC he already had a yellow. Doesn't matter though, Vidic wasn't going to take a PK.

Drogba's red card was fully deserved. In fact, he deserved to get beat down for doing such a bitch thing.

Cech and Van der Sar are the same size, BTW.

JspurW

I think it has something to do with how the nation does in international play, home and away performances, what direction the wind was blowing, etc.

They're not power rankings, a lot of the teams have played differently than their ranking would suggest in the past few months.

Someone mentioned them earlier, but my dark horse pick for Euro 2008 is the Dutch. Having Clarence Sedorf drop out though could hurt them, but I wanted to pull for a country with players I liked since England didn't qualify and they are usually my 2nd team to cheer for behind the US.

Yeah, the N-lands are the best team to never win a World Cup and I would love to see them win the Euro but I think the team to take the title will be Portugal.

Plus they landed right in the Group of Death.

Even with Ronaldinho, I don't see Man City cracking the top 4 just yet. Liverpool will be improving this offseason (hopefully we will be able to sign Gareth Barry) and I don't see Man U (even if they lose Ronaldo) or Arsenal falling off much, even with the players they will lose. Chelsea will be interesting to watch, they could get raided by Mourinho this summer...........but like I said, even with all that, I don't see Manchester City cracking the top 4 yet.

even better, they're going to loan him out to a somewhat lesser team (name escapes me) in la liga where he can get a ton of burn for the first year at least and develop. getting out of mls is the most important thing for altidore right now, but second only to that is actually getting significant playing time wherever he ends up... but yeah that's great news.

very interesting... i will believe it when i see it though.

however, with hughes there that probably gives city the inside track at signing roque santa cruz... they already have an effective striker in benjani. it will be very interesting to see what they do over the summer with that crazy thai owner of theirs.

mls stands for major league soccer... basically it is the united states' pro league... every country (or almost every country) has it's own pro league. most people that follow pro soccer in the usa follow the mls usually and one or more of the spanish, italian, or english league... with the majority of us following the english league. "fa" stands for the english "football association." the term "soccer" comes from the term "association football."

the quality of play in mls is vastly inferior to what you get in the top leagues i have to say. it's getting better but it's hard to watch sometimes, especially when they're playing on astroturf like they were in new york tonight.

Its going to get better, though. Most every team is on their way to their own stadium, and fan support is increasing. The Seattle and Toronto expansion teams are showing the league how its done. It really is the PBR to Europe's Bordeaux, but its our cheap little league and I enjoy supporting it.
