Talk about the English leagues here.

anyone else a little anxious with Teves, Bellamy and Torres at ManUtd, Westham and Liverpool, respectively?

I don't necessarily have a favorite team (lean towards the Blues), I LOVE ALL Premeriship football, but I do have favorite players. Rooney, Schevchenko, Drogba, and Lampard are some of my FAVORITES!!

If you don't like soccer, just don't read this thread.

Sneez, I am a huge Liverpool supporter. I am really glad to see the Reds pick up Torres, and we sold Bellamy to West Ham today, so that helps. Benitez is making some good moves this off season.

I think that Man United will be tough to catch this season, they should be the favorites to win the Premiership. I think Chelsea and Arsenal will take small steps back this year, and Liverpool will finish 2nd but Man U will probably win the title again....they look very strong coming into the season. I think my Reds will make another strong run in the Champions League in 2007-2008 as well.

What's the latest on Lamphard. Has he signed yet or is he going to stay put and play out his contract?

Mid-August.

They have a nine month season Augsust to May (about 1 game every week, 38 games)

It's different from the MLS which starts in April and ends in Novemeber with the MLS cup.

Come on Blues!!!!!!

We picked up Steve Sidwell (striker to fill in for Drogba while on national duty) from Reading. Malouda (winger) from Lyon, Tal Ben Haim (defender) from Bolton, Pizarro (forward) from Bayern Munich.

Plus we still have Lamps, Terry, SWP, Robben, Makelele, Essien, Cech, Ballack, Sheva, Joe and Ashley Cole, Kalou, Mikel, and Diarra.
The Blues are still stacked without major buys in the off season.

Like Terry said, "...United only has the title on loan."

a healthy chelsea is going to be tough to deal with for the rest of the premiership... i see chelsea maybe not running away with the title, but maybe not far from that either...

my fearless predictions:

1. chelsea... what i said earlier... everyone back and healthy. end of story.

2. manu... still have their core coming back... not sold on rooney and tevez being able to work together as they're basically the same type of player.

3. liverpool... will hang around for a while probably... maybe will have a late run at the title when all their new players get comfy but i think in the end they are just a notch below chelsea and manu.

4. aresenal... no surprise pick here, really... great young players but not enough to seriously challenge for the title.

5. spurs...great offense... concede too many goals to realistically challenge for anything.

6. villa... my super surprise pick for this season... this club is serious about becoming a euro power... may take a couple years but i can see them challenging for the top 4 spots eventually. i could even see them finishing higher than 6th this year.

7-11. newcastle, everton, portsmouth, bolton, blackburn... not necessarily in this order... you know, same ol' same ol' from these clubs

then the 3rd tier aka everyone else... reading, middlesborough, man city, west ham... sunderland and birmingham i think will stay up.

teams to go down:
derby: no brainer... they suck
wigan: not going to squeak by this year
fulham: this club is in a mess right now... hope they don't get sent down though b/c of the americans.

mickeyrivers

Scotland has to have a team or two right? who are they, if any?
scotland has two teams that are relevant in the european grand scheme of things: celtic and rangers... two of the most storied clubs in europe. the scottish premier league as a whole is nothing too great though. usually hearts is decent... but i don't know about the other clubs.

i wish england, ireland, scotland, whales, and northern ireland would put all their club teams together and have a british cup each year instead of the pointless "league" cup.

carolinathru&thru
07-10-2007, 07:47 PM
just to add to what mickeyrivers said....

Celtic and Rangers combined have won about 85% of the Scottish championships over the last 100 years. (no joke)

Both are in Glasgow, Scotland and both are big rivals (like fans literally killing each other).

The hostility between the two teams stems from the animosity between Catholics and protestants in Scotland. The Catholics support Celtic and the protestants support Rangers.

^ Aberdeen is another Scottish side with some decent history.

whatI would really like to see is the EPL and SPL (Scottish Premiership) combine to form a "British Premiership". I think that would be really cool. But it will never happen.

yeah, would never happen but it would be fun to see how celtic and rangers would do in the epl. i don't think they would threaten the big 4, but with the money they'd be making from being in the league plus their great fanbases and history, i think they would do pretty well.

would never happen though... not like they'd get extra champions league spots and they'd have to petition fifa for every team to get into the league which would likely be turned down because you sort of open a pandora's box if you do that. i think something like a british cup i suggested earlier would be much more feasable.

SangareeCrew
07-10-2007, 09:28 PM
Yeah, I agree that a British Cup would be a great idea. Probably a LOT more likely to happen than a British league.

hardcock, next week our MLS all-stars are playing Celtic on ESPN2 at 9. Next thursday, I believe.

Here's how I think the EPL will finish out...

1. Chelsea. All are strong and comfortable together. When healthy, they're unbeatable. When unhealthy, they're practically unbeatable.

2. Liverpool.
3.ManU. Not sure the "New Yankees" can work together.
4. Everton. This is a squad on the rise.

UEFA Cup spots
5. Reading. This is a hungry, young team.
6. Arsenal. No Champions League spot this year.
7. Tottenham. They live in this position.
8. Middlesbrough

9-17 Toss up for the rest.

Relegation spots
18. Fulham
19. West Ham
20. Wigan

I don't really have any "favorites" in the EPL.

I've always like Man U and Liverpool (somewhat contradictory).

But, as of late i've been following Fulham the most. I really like the way that the team has been built up from a 3rd division club into a staple in the EPL. Plus I enjoy watching all of the american players.

well i watched the chelsea-blue wings game last night and i have to say i have mixed feelings about the performance... it's so far before the season starts that you really can't tell a whole lot from the game of course but a few things stuck out... first of all shevchenko disappointed me. i don't really know why he can't get going but he looked slow and awkward... lampard looked slow and rusty too... really even though chelsea did dominate possession in the 1st half, the only bright spots were john terry, joe cole, and of course essien... the second half unit had a lot more spark... drogba did his thing... molouda looked pretty good even though you can tell he doesn't know his teammates that well yet. the defense looked spotty but they were only playing 2 in the back the whole second half basically as possession was in the korean club's half of the field the entire time... i guess overall i was satisfied... the talent on the club is unbelievable... just everyone is rusty. if they play like that against the galaxy they might luck up and get a decent result if they can get donovon loose on a counter attack.

btw, that obi mikel guy... wtf he did a bunch of stupid shyte.

oh, another btw, robben is gone to real madrid... most people figured he was leaving when molouda was brought in... just didn't know when and where.

edit- oops forgot to give wright-phillips his due... he was man of the match imo... great performance from him last night... er i mean tuesday night.

beside the fact that manu hate liverpool and there hasn't been a transfer between the 2 clubs since the 60's, there's also the matter of manu knowing liverpool is going to be close to the top of the table along with them and i'm sure they don't want heinze helping liverpool down the stretch run of the epl season. even though i don't like manu, they're well within their rights not to sell heinze to liverpool. that would be akin to the mets trading an all-star to the braves or the broncos trading a pro-bowler to the cheifs... or to relate it to college fball, like a school letting a player transfer to another school in the conference. the last thing you want is for it to come back and bite you in the azz later.

Liverpool (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/soccer/team?categoryId=566) have unveiled plans for their new 60,000-capacity stadium, which could be expanded to become the biggest club ground in Britain.

The (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/soccer/team?categoryId=566)Reds (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/soccer/team?categoryId=566) have submitted an official planning application to (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/soccer/team?categoryId=566)Liverpool (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/soccer/team?categoryId=566) City Council for the ground in Stanley Park, which is scheduled to open in 2010 and will cost around £300million.

Central to the revised plans is the potential to further expand the stadium to more than 70,000 seats in the future "dependent on improvements to the local transport infrastructure".
As expected, the plans include a new 18,000 capacity, single-tier Kop.

Sounds awesome. I knew that the original new Anfield plans had been scrapped, and that they were looking to expand even bigger. This is going to be a great stadium for Liverpool....also glad to hear the tradition of the Kop will live on. GO REDS!!!

SangareeCrew
07-25-2007, 04:20 PM
The Kop is where Liverpool's most vocal supporters groups sit. It is easily the loudest part of the stadium today. The defining feature is a very steep, single-tier stand. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about the history of the Kop.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_kop

Kop is the name for a number of stands at football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_%28soccer%29) stadia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadia) in England and abroad; which take the name kop due to their steep nature, resembling that of a hill, which is what the word kop means.

The first football terrace with this name was at Woolwich Arsenal's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arsenal_F.C.) Manor Ground (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manor_Ground%2C_Plumstead)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_kop#_note-0). The mound of terracing was opened in 1904 and was soon nicknamed the Spion Kop by fans.
Many English football grounds have a Kop. The most famous one being at Anfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anfield), home of Liverpool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C.) of 'The Kop'. Built in 1906 and named 'Spion Kop' in memory of a hill in South Africa which had been a battlegrond in the Boer War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boer_War), it could hold up to 24,000 'Kopites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopites)'.

The supporters on Liverpool's Kop helped make Anfield famous for its atmosphere, supporters' enthusiasm, and making an intense and fiery match day atmosphere. 'Kopites' is also a collective name given to the loyal supporters of Liverpool Football club.
Villa Park's old Holte End is historically the largest of all 'kop' ends closely followed by the old South Bank at Molineux, both once regularly holding crowds in excess of 30,000. By The mid 1980s Hillsborough's kop had become the largest roofed terrace in Europe, with a capacity of around 25,000.

There is much conjecture about what type of stand constitutes a Kop. The size and location of the stand in the stadium varies, with most being located behind the goal and being occupied by its club's most vocal supporters. It is usually a single tiered stand and traditionally terraced, however modern stadium design has required many to be made all seated. It is not necessarily the largest stand in the stadium and does not have to have a particularly large capacity, for example Chesterfield's stadium the Recreation Ground (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recreation_Ground) has a Kop with a capacity of only a few thousand.

In the picture above, you are looking at the Kop. That is where I will sit when I make my trip to England someday to see my beloved Reds.

yeah, it is sort of pointless, but it's kind of a neat way to kick off the season though, even though it makes 2 teams play an extra game just a week before the reg season... i think all these pointless preseason games they play are worse than that. tonight chelsea played some team called "brondby"... i mean, honestly, what is the point of even doing that?

That's the Gooners for you. Play like shyte for 85 minutes then pull the winning goal out of your arse. There is no way Arsenal land a top 4 spot this season. Fulham needs to get it together quick also or they'll be in the relegation fight early this season.

i hope fulham can avoid relegation this year, if for no other reason than the american players playing for them.

it was a bad day for the americans in the end today though. dempsey and bocanegra missed easy scoring chances. mcbride was invisible all day. bocanegra committed the penalty that led to the first arsenal goal and was in position but failed to make a play on the second arsenal goal. so, yeah, not very good.

Pizarro and Malouda set Chelsea up in the first half with goals apiece. In the 64th, Essien came through with a cannon of a shot and netted the top corner to go up 3-2.

Drogba came in late and took an elbow to the eyebrow which opened up. He played the rest of the game with a wrap around his head. He looked like a freakin mummy. SWP gets man of the match though. He orchestrated all of Chelsea's shots.

Defense was kinda shaky on the backline. JT was out and Glenn Johnson has the worst case of nerves I've ever seen. Hopefully he'll settle down as the season goes on. Ben Haim was superb as usual and Carvalho is fail-safe.

They looked real good...they have Reading on Wednesday, I think, so they gotta play hard. ManU couldn't do anything to'em even with Reading a man-down.

sounds alright... do you ever listen to world soccer daily on podcast or sirius? one of the hosts is a chelsea fan and they do a good job imo. he's one of the guys who hosts fox football fone-in on fsc if you've ever seen that show (which comes on tomorrow night at 8:00 btw).

anyway, according to that guy, phillips had one of his best games in a chelsea uniform. i'm glad to hear that malouda and pizarro played well.

as for the defense... honestly, that doesn't worry me any as long as we get terry back and alex in there asap. terry, alex, carvalho, and sneez would be the best backline in the premier league... so as long as the other back has a pulse we won't be conceding many goals this year... not to mention having guys like essien and mikel able to come back and help out from the midfield... and oh btw the best goalkeeper in the world... so, one bad performance doesn't make me too nervous.

really, considering how the rest of the "big 4" did this weekend, i'm just glad to get the 3 points.

also, consider how the rest of the newly promoted sides did: sunderland stunning spurs and derby drawing pompey... they all came out swinging.

reading worries me a little b/c they're probably going to play us the same way they played manu, which is just pack everyone in a la guatemala. they just need to be patient and be wary of the counter attack and they'll be alright though.

DirecTV had a free Setanta preview all day this past Sunday. That's how I watched the Chelsea match. If I'm not mistaken, b/t FSC and Setanta you should be able to watch all Chelsea and ManU matches...plus some other matches as well. Setanta is $15/month for the one channel, but they will have the majority of Champions League matches, Chelsea, and ManU. I'm thinking about getting that channel. I already ahve the sports package that includes FSC.

i've seen a lot of people picking sunderland to do fairly well this year (not top ten, but avoid relegation by a decent amt of points)... so i was expecting them to compete.

i think bolton has been as much of a disappoitment as tottenham. at least with spurs you get the feeling they can turn it around... bolton has just been disgusting after the first 2 games and their old manager is tearing it up right now with newcastle.

Let me give you a run-down:

On FSC, there are usually live English Premier League games every Saturday between 8 am and 12 pm.
On saturday nights, FSC carries live MLS games.
FSC also carries Live Argentinian League matches on Sundays (I believe)

ESPN2 carries live MLS games EVERY (almost) Thursday night. (they also carry MLS games on other special occasions. Check mlsnet.com to see)

ESPN/ESPN2 also carries almost ALL of the US Men's National Team games. Check ussoccer.com to see when those games are.

Hope that helps.

The only games that are free on mlsnet.com are the Superliga matches.

Unfortunately, you have to play twenty bucks per year to see all of the "mls.tv" games. It's a pretty good deal, IMO. But, I wouldn't suggest paying for it now since there's only two and a half months left in the season.

edit- well, i guess fsc was wrong... it was indeed 2-1 boro... terrible result for fulham. come on, guys, wtf. i just want them to succeed b/c there are so many americans on their team (maybe that's their problem, lol). i heard they were going after jay demerit. i think that would help them in the back.

predictions?

i say 0-0 draw... maybe 1-0 liverpool if we make a mistake in the back, but i definitely favor a draw.

wow, should have been 1-0 liverpool but we were gifted a pk... i will definitely take the point... we did end up making a mistake in the back and no surprise it was ben haim who is a pretty good defender but is not exactly the fastest player in the league. great finish by torres... who, btw, i had no idea was such a diver/flopper. get up, torres.

We definitely got a free one with that pk...but like you said, I'll take that all day long. The ref was a geniune ass pirate. How many yellows did he give out? A real David f'in Copperfield with all those cards. Drogba was quiet all day. I wish Carvalho could have been on the backline. Torres should be a ballerina with all that diving and Gerrard is awesome even playing hurt.

Styles out of weekend games

Referee dropped after mistake

By Lewis Rutledge (http://www.skysports.com/contactus/0,20299,,00.html) Last updated: 20th August 2007

http://img.skysports.com/07/08/218x298/stylesrob_558314.jpg Styles: Admits mistake

Referees' chief Keith Hackett has confirmed that Rob Styles will not officiate in next weekend's Premier League matches.

Styles awarded Chelsea a controversial penalty against Liverpool on Sunday for a foul by Steve Finnan on Florent Malouda, but replays showed the Reds defender to be completely innocent.

Styles has since admitted to Hackett that he got the decision wrong but has nevertheless been withdrawn from the next round of Premier League games.

Hackett told Sky Sports News: "I have spoken to Rob and obviously he was extremely disappointed when he looked at the video with the decision.

"He has admitted that he got it wrong, but accountability exists and we at the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) do expect referees to get the big decisions right.

"Therefore Rob will not be officiating next weekend."

Styles also appeared to show Michael Essien a second yellow card without sending the Chelsea player off, and Hackett will look into the matter.

However, he is satisfied that Styles did not intend to caution Essien and was in fact booking John Terry.

He explained: "I've investigated that and it might be the subject of further investigation, but I have been informed by both the fourth official and Rob that it was a basic, if you like, admin error, rather than an error of application of law."

No decision has yet been made on Styles' future after next weekend.

Concern

There were other controversial incidents in the Premier League this weekend, notably when David Healy was not awarded a goal for Fulham even though his shot crossed the line before being clawed out by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

"The referees come together tomorrow and we will review a number of decisions from the weekend that frankly concerned me," said Hackett.

"I spoke to Lawrie Sanchez after the weekend and those decision will be analysed in some detail to see how we can improve getting big decisions right."

Absolutely! I thoroughly enjoyed watch Chelsea and Liverpool battle it out last year and hope for more of the same. Now, if I can just get this Direct TV/Setanta thing squared away I'll be in business. Right now, I'm missing, oh, I don't know, EVERY game!

As for Manchester City....did anyone see this coming? And what about Man U? They have really stumbled coming out of the gates. Nevertheless, I'd be very surprised if the tables don't turn in the coming months. Of course, seeing a sleeper like Man. City fight it out would provide for some nice fair.

SangareeCrew

I think Man U may have dug themselves a hole they will have a tough time digging out of. Liverpool sit 9th right now on 4 points, but they have only played 2 games. Chelsea has 7 pts and City is 1st with 9 points but both have played 3 games. I think when things shake out Chelsea and Liverpool will sit 1st and 2nd in either order, and it could switch places a lot before May. Should be fun. Maybe Man City could challenge for a Champions League spot???

mickeyrivers
08-21-2007, 10:54 AM
well to be fair, man city has played west ham and derby county... not every game will be against west ham and derby county... the win against manu was great and all but their goal was against the run of play. manu took 11 corners in that game to city's 0... of course the only stat that matters is goals, but still... when that game gets back to trafford later in the year i anticipate a beatdown.

...as for the liverpool fans, hey, get over it! nobody was saying anything last week when gerrard flopped like a fish to get the free kick that lead to that game-winner... yeah it was a non-penalty, but it's a long season. i'm sure chelsea will have something bad happen to them somewhere along the way as well.

...besides, drogba had the ball in the box and could have taken a shot... bastard ref just took away a shooting opportunity!!! haha, ok j/k liverpoo fans... easy, easy!!

Chelsea agree deal for Belletti

Times Online and Agencies

Chelsea have agreed a reported £3.7 million fee for Barcelona right back Juliano Belletti. The London club expect the 31-year-old Brazilian to move to Stamford Bridge providing he agrees personal terms and passes a medical.
Belletti scored the winning goal for Barca in the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal in Paris. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmZbD0McImo)
The move appears to end their interest in Seville's right back Daniel Alves and comes less than 24 hours after Chelsea agreed to sell Dutch winger Arjen Robben to Real Madrid.
Real Madrid plan to present Robben and Gabriel Heinze, the Manchester United full back, to the fans and media at 4pm today. The Spanish champions have not revealed whether the duo have passed their medicals or signed contracts yet - but they appear confident of the transfers being completed this afternoon.

what is the deal with shevchenko? on the podcast i listen to they said he was with his ukranian nat'l team right now and they aren't saying that he is injured but that he is "not match fit." i thought he was going to rebound and have a decent year this season. what a huge waste of money he is turning out to be.

well i think it's definitely an achievement to make it to the prem, let alone at his old age... think about it.. not only are henneman, friedel, and howard americans playing in the prem, they're among the best at their position. there aren't many keepers playing in the epl i'd take over those guys... now add keller and that's 20% of the league with american goalkeepers. that's astonishing if you ask me... and pretty kickass too.

Liverpool overpower Toulouse

Liverpool eased themselves into group stages of the Champions League and earned themselves £12million into the bargain with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Toulouse.

http://soccernet-akamai.espn.go.com/design05/images/RyhsJones275.jpg

On the 800th anniversary of the city the Reds claimed their 50th home European Cup win, and it was never easier.
Without Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, they still outplayed an uninspired French side to reach the last 32 of the competition.
Liverpool shuffled their pack again and still produced a side that played fluent, quick-passing football that Toulouse never matched.
Peter Crouch, left out of the last two matches, returned to score after just 19 minutes and captain for the night Sami Hyypia made light of a broken nose to head home the second just after the break.
Dirk Kuyt gained his reward with the third after 87 minutes, drilling a shot in off the far post, and he added a fourth in injury time.
Hyypia captained the side as Javier Mascherano and Mohamed Sissoko were paired in central midfield with Argentinian winger Sebastian Leto making his debut on the left.

Fear Bramall Lane!!!! Blades will return to Premiership Action in 2008!!! If not for Tevez (read: the devil) and some HORRIBLE managerial decisions by a certain EX-Blade, we'd have stayed up. Then again, when you lose to FREAKIN WIGAN on the last day...with relegation on the plate...maybe you should head down to the likes of Colchester, Coventry, and Wolves.

That said, it took us three matches to get four points, so maybe that's where we belong, especially since Jags opted for Everton leaving us a bit bare in midfield.

(sigh) How foolish of me to think my Blades would stay up and begin their 10 year journey to EPL supremacy. That's okay, after moving into the Carling Cup third round, we're ready for the Lavendar Lads from Scunthorpe this weekend.

Mourinho makes shock Chelsea exit

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44127000/jpg/_44127039_jose.jpg Mourinho's position was the subject of continual scrutiny last season

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has stunned the world of football by leaving Stamford Bridge by mutual consent.
The decision comes after the club held a crisis meeting to discuss the indifferent start to the new season. Mourinho, 44, joined Chelsea in June 2004 and led them to the Premiership title in each of his first two seasons. But his relationship with Blues owner Roman Abramovich grew increasingly troubled and he quit despite having three years left on his contract.......

Mourinho's Chelsea love affair finally ends

By John Ley

Jose Mourinho's love affair with Chelsea began in June 2004. It was soon to develop into a love-hate relationship.

From the day he proclaimed himself the 'Special One', the pressure was on to bring success to London SW6 and, for the first two years, few could argue with his remarkable record.

Jose Mario dos Santos Mourinho Felix was born in Setubal, Portugal, in 1963, the son of Felix Mourinho, a former Portuguese international goalkeeper. Interestingly, for one who did not make the grade as a player, he insisted on keeping goal when a Chelsea staff XI played against a press team during the summer tour to the United States.
After an unimpressive playing career with small clubs, he showed a better aptitude for management, displaying organisational ability and, from an early age, he had prepared match reports and dossiers for his father's teams.

He gained a degree in physical education, specialising in the methodology of sport, while working as a high school coach.
After low-key backroom jobs at Estrela da Amadora and his hometown club, Vitoria de Setubal, in the early 1990s, Mourinho soon earned the nickname Tradutor [translator] when he worked with Sir Bobby Robson at both Sporting Lisbon and then FC Porto.

He then followed Robson to Barcelona in 1996 where he also learned the Catalan language. When Robson left for PSV Eindhoven, Mourinho stayed at Barcelona and worked with Robson's replacement, Dutch coach Louis van Gaal. Eventually, Mourinho was offered the chance to coach Barcelona's B team.

In 2000, Mourinho progressed to a senior coaching post, being selected to replace Jupp Heynckes at Benfica. For the first time —and not the last — Mourinho became embroiled in club politics. Club president Joao Vale e Azevedo came off worst in their election and the new president, Manuel Vilarinho, already had another coach waiting on the wings. Mourinho quit and joined Uniao de Leiria, whom he hoisted into third place.

That feat was noted and, in January 2002, he joined Porto where his career was to take off as a manager.
Mourinho guided the team to third place that year and gave the promise of "making Porto champions next year".
He went on to win his first Super Liga with 86 points — a Portuguese record. Mourinho also won the Portuguese Cup while adding the Uefa Cup, beating Celtic in the final in Seville, in May 2003.
Porto won the title again the following season with a perfect home record. Then Mourinho won the ultimate prize, the Champions League, with an emphatic 3-0 win over Monaco.

The cream of Europe were after him. The manner of his celebration at the end of the final hinted at pastures new and Mourinho publicly stated his preference for the Liverpool job over Chelsea.

But Mourinho did move to Stamford Bridge, becoming one of the highest paid managers in football with a salary of £4.2 million a year, subsequently raised in 2005 to £5.2 million.
In a press conference after joining Chelsea, Mourinho said: "Please don't call me arrogant but I'm European champion and I think I'm a Special One" — a title which stuck.

Mourinho was allowed to continue the spending begun by predecessor Claudio Ranieri while club owner Roman Abramovich offered him an open chequebook. He quickly spent in excess of £70?million on the likes of Didier Drogba, Mateja Kezman, Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira.

By early December of his first season, Chelsea were at the top of the Premiership table and in February 2005, Mourinho led Chelsea to his first trophy, the Carling Cup, after beating Liverpool.

Two months later, Chelsea secured the club's first top-flight domestic title in 50 years with a 2-0 victory over Bolton, but the joy was tinged with sadness at losing to Liverpool in the semi-final of the Champions League.

More controversy was to follow, in June 2005, when he was fined £200,000 — later reduced to £75,000 —- for his part in a meeting with Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole the previous January, in breach of the Premier League rules.

A month earlier he signed a new five-year deal, saying: "I'm delighted. My heart is with Chelsea. I cannot imagine a club where I would be happier."

After topping the Premier League for most of the 2005-06 season, Chelsea claimed their second consecutive Premiership title and Mourinho's fourth domestic title in a row.

After the presentation of his championship medal, Mourinho threw his medal and blazer into the crowd.
Mourinho's relationship with Abramovich struck a low midway through last season but following months of speculation, he received assurances over his future with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon insisting the Special One would not be sacked, saying: "Jose has a contract to 2010 and he wants to stay."

Mourinho won the another Carling Cup last February after beating Arsenal at Cardiff and then he led Chelsea to their fourth FA Cup victory, beating United at Wembley. This season, though, began badly. Chelsea stated their intentions by insisting they wanted to win the Champions League twice in the next six years but Mourinho said he needed good eggs to make a decent omelette. Now the Chelsea dream has been scrambled.

Chelsea is still a big club with a lot of talent......I hate to say it, but I think the club will rally around the new manager and they will do well.

I saw an article on Foxsoccer.com saying that Jose has already been linked to the Tottenham Hotspur job. Thoughts?

I think he's going to coach the Portugese National team, personally. That just makes the most sense.

That's what I was thinking, he may coach Portugal. That would be very interesting considering his recent rift with Christiano Renaldo.

Very true. The timing would be good for the Portugese FA to sack their current coach and bring in Jose. But does he want to coach international football? I think he may want to take another stab in England, but that's just me. I think he would like to be able to win the Premiership with a "small" club, just to do what people say can't be done.

Whoever does get Jose will be very lucky indeed. He is a very good manager and gets the most from his players (other than the start to this season).

it's crazy that it happened this early but you could just tell his days were numbered... he and the russian didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things and the way they started out coupled with the whole shevchenko fiasco and a few other things... i'm sad because he's one of the best in the world, but chelsea will sign another great manager and maybe a breath of fresh air will be good in the long run.

this season is shot though.

This season may be over for Chelsea as far as the Premiership goes, but I wouldn't be suprised to see a strong finish and maybe another FA Cup or Carling Cup.

they're a ways off right now from what i understand, but you never know. watford is looking good so far in the champ.

Woohoo! Man U wins 2-0 vs Chelsea. Yeah, Saha dived on the play leading to the penalty goal, but J. and A. Cole were diving all over the field. It would have been hard for them to win with one shot on goal. They were awful.

Quite a ways off, actually. The players are still learning Robson's ways, and losing Jags to Everton hurt more than anyone is willing to admit (which is idiotic when you consider that he was the best we had in midfield).

No, I think we are missing some key talent, and maybe if they gel under Robs, then we have a chance to climb the table. Right now, I'm not very happy sitting at 16, but I can always find solace in seeing Wendy bringing up the bottom of the table.
