Pair’s court date rescheduled

Fuller, Chisenhall given continuance for grand larceny, burglary charges

Former USC baseball players Nick Fuller and Lonnie Chisenhall briefly appeared in court Thursday morning, and will appear again on Sept. 20 after receiving continuances.

The two former players were due for their second appearance Thursday, at which time they would have applied for a trial or entered a plea. They are now scheduled to do so again in three weeks at the Richland County Judicial Building.

The lawyer for each player said the move was routine, declining to say more.

“Nothing substantial has happened with the case,” said Neal Lourie, Fuller’s lawyer.

Fuller and Chisenhall were dismissed from the team March 19, when they were arrested on grand larceny and burglary charges. Fuller, a native of Georgia, is charged with three counts of each; Chisenhall, from North Carolina, is charged with one count each.

Fuller was charged in connection with the alleged theft of $9,600 of property, including three desktop computers and $3,100 in cash from then-assistant coach Jim Toman’s locker. Chisenhall was charged with an alleged theft from a dorm room.

Dick Harpootlian, representing Chisenhall, said the move was made so the judicial system could deal with “more serious” cases.

“In the big scheme of things, to Carolina athletic fans this is a big deal,” Harpootlian said. “But in the big scheme of things it’s not.”

The two players were the most high-profile members of last year’s baseball recruiting class. Fuller, a pitcher, was a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Devils. Chisenhall, who played outfield, third base and pitcher, was Baseball America’s pick to be the freshman of the year.

It is unclear whether either player has enrolled at another school or joined another team.

“All that will come out at the appropriate time,” Harpootlian said.
