Local wins Carolina Panthers award
Aynor offensive lineman T.J. Johnson has been named the first 2007 winner of the Carolina Panthers Community Captain Award.
The Panthers select just 10 recipients from the Carolinas over the course of the season. Winners must demonstrate community service, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be considered a Division I prospect.
Johnson fits that description. Beyond his work in the community, which includes serving food to the homeless, visiting nursing homes and other projects, Johnson carries a 3.9 GPA and has committed to play football for coach Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Johnson will be honored along with the other nine recipients during a ceremony on Dec. 16, when the Panthers host Seattle. The winners will receive a Panthers jersey with their name on the back, will get the chance to participate in service projects with Panthers players and will have their name featured on Carolina's Web site (http://www.panthers.com/Common/Article.aspx?id=3148).
Johnson is ranked at the 15th best player in South Carolina by Rivals.com.
