I've never played any of the Halo games (gasp!!!!). I normally only play two games; NCAA and Tiger Woods. What makes Halo so good that everyone gushes about it? Why is there a version of the game being sold for $120? I also saw another version for around $70 or $80, and another for around $60. What are the differences? Why would someone like me want to buy this game? I don't want to miss out if it's "The best game ever" as some claim, but I don't want to buy it and decide it wasn't worth the $120 either. Also, will I need to play Halo 1 and 2 before I get started on 3?

you definitely DON'T need the $120 version....it's packed with snooze-inducing extras like making of featurettes. yawn.
buy the $60 version - it's all you need. it's a very fun FPS if you play on LIVE (well, the other two were anyway...assuming this one will be as well). very addicting gameplay.

I won't convince you to buy Halo 3, because I think it's going to suck. I got the beta version that came with Crackdown, and played it twice. It convinced me not to go out and buy the game when it comes out. It's basically just like Halo 2, with very few enhanced changes that would improve the game.

Single player != Multiplayer, and news outlets are reporting that Halo 3 multiplayer has more to it and looks better than the beta showed.
Millions of gamers aren't wrong. The Halo series has great gameplay, graphics, and storytelling. If you like FPS games, you'll like Halo. It's at least worth $60.

Halo never impressed me. I've been mainly a pc gamer though. No console can compete with high end PC graphics. BioShock, Crysis, UT III, Quake Wars, HL:2 EP2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 all rank higher on my list than Halo. I still think the original Half-Life was a far better game than Halo. The reason Halo has such big sales numbers is not many people can afford a $1500+ PC to run cutting edge graphics and gameplay.

What the hell is a fanboy I here you guys calling each other that all the time.
BTW why do you really care what other people are buying. If I like a system or a game I will buy it and I don't care if 80 million people buy it or 80 people buy it. I don't buy systems or games to impress people. Personally I don't care if XBOX360 beats out PS3 b/c I don't have stock in either company. Now if I did that would be a different story.
Sorry to rant but just kinda wondering what peoples deal is with this. Or maybe you guys are invested in these companies. Or is this like a Chevy

Fanboy is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsession). Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. Fanboys are also typically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.

You can pick up the other two cheap now. Try one of them. Halo is not a bad series. The control is pretty damn good for a console fps. I still like my mouse and keyboard, but it works.
From what I hear, they really dumbed down the beta. Still more to be seen. Hope they go all out because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks kickass and the multiplayer sounds good. Hell, even Area 51: Blacksite is pretty good (based on demo.)
I'm going to be broke this holiday season.

I have a "free" copy for the PC. It's ok but the graphics were very dated by the time is was available on PC. You just can't beat a high end gaming mouse and keyboard for FPS games. I just can't get used the analog sticks for console FPS games.

From bungie community-relations guy Luke Smith on neogaf:
"Halo 3 was playable and demonstrated for the press behind closed doors at E3. Aside from the two Bungie employees who went to E3 to demonstrate a "rally point" from campaign mission Sierra 117 and a Saved film of multiplayer map Sandtrap, Bungie is "all hands on deck," working on finishing Halo 3. It's important to Bungie that as much effort as possible goes into completing Halo 3, so that our fans can have the best possible experience with the game later this fall. As far as making that behind closed doors footage available to the public, we're aware of our fans' interest and desires to see Halo 3's campaign demonstration in motion and historically, Bungie has always been good to its fans.
CV&G is incorrect, here."
I don't know how soon it will be though. It would be incredibly easy for them to do, as saved films works in Single Player. But if they were going to release to footage soon after E3, why not just do it on stage?
Regardless, he seems to say here it is coming. And this is the footage that has media-types raving, and all of them saying this is what Bungie should have shown, not the poorly-edited trailer.
Time will tell.

To tell you the truth, I like Gears of War a little better than Halo, and I like the Half-life series 10x as much as that. Halo is fun, but it is slightly over-hyped, imo. I'll probably own it a few weeks after it comes out though.

I think the fanboy-ism (at least from what I've seen) is that everyone wants to feel justified in the trunk-loads of cash that they spent when buying their chosen console. Perhaps that's why you don't see many Wii fanboys, because it only cost 249 bucks...
Anyways, I think I'll rent Halo 3 and see what the fuss is about. I played Halo and Halo 2, but they never really impressed me all that much.

I've said before I'm not a big Halo fan, but I can pretty much bet money that me and my buddy are going to get that game just for co-op. He's a big fan of co-op as am I. Multiplayer might be fun for a while, but teamwork is where it's at!

I've played halo 1 and 2 and I wasn't impressed. I guess this is because I've played so many good PC first person shooters. There are sooo many PC games that blow it away. Maybe it is big because it was the first decent FPS on a console?
What do you mean by 4 player co op? 4 on the same tv? I wouldn't want to play like that. Playing on xbox live seems much better. How many people can play on each xbox live server?

I don't get posts like these. What PC shooters blow it away exactly? I'll grant you that some are better in certain aspects, but I can't think of any (not even Half Life) that I would place in a completely and totally seperate category. The way you say this implies that most PC FPS games blow Halo away. That certainly wasn't the case back in 2001...
It wasn't the first "decent" FPS on a console. It was the first FPS done right on a console, and still unsurpassed in quality in its genre on consoles.
Anyways, it's only 2 people on one box, 4 players over Xbox Live or System Link.

I know where LilSpur is coming from on his post. I used to play PC games only, and I'm sure when he says FPS on PC he probably means HL, HL2 (and mods), CoD Series, etc. To be honest, I prefer FPS on PC's for the control factor. I'm just now getting used to using a controller to navigate and shoot people. It's just not accurate enough for me. With all that said, I think the thing that bugged (and still does) me about Halo and even GoW for that matter was the fact that you had to unload alot of ammo into a single enemy. (Even headshots) I just don't like the ultra-unrealistic alien shooters. I'd rather play Rainbow Six or CoD for more realistic conditions.
Having said that, though, I'll at least rent Halo 3 for the co-op campaign.

All I'm saying is it seems to me that those complaints are more platform-derived than anything else. I can certainly understand anyone coming from a PC background not feeling at home in Halo (much like I can't stand UT, it's too fast and twitchy for me). Halo definitely has its own pace, flow, and speed, and it just doesn't translate well over to the PC (it sold what, ten copies on PC?)
All the same, it just seems like to many PC gamers try to judge it based on being a PC game (which is their point of view, of course) when it isn't, and too many playstation/nintendo fans degrade it based on some inane loyalty to an international corporation.
But then again, an equal number of rabid microsoft-philes think the sun rises and sets around Bungie headquarters...
But anyway, I wish I had the money for a gaming PC. I still think the PC is the best gaming platform, bar none, it is just so cost prohibitive. And I'm begininning to wonder if Battlefield 2 or CS will ever be topped for online multiplayer...

-i don't agree that "sooo many PC games...blow it away"
-i'd say the first "decent FPS on a console" was goldeneye on the 64...it was pretty dang good for its day.
-there are many "decent FPS" on consoles now.
-i believe the 4 player co-op is referring to being able to play through the single-player campaign online with a few friends.

Halo 3 may be the biggest seller of all time....i dunno. It will not have to be the best looking or best playing game. Microsoft is gonna dump big time money into it's launch and Halo has a big fan base. If you enjoy it....then I'm happy for you. But in my opinion FPS on PC > FPS on consoles
The gameplay: movement, graphics, physics, texture, controls, pin point accuracy(not having to spray and pray),being able to adjust all settings, being able to run more than 30 fps (more like 120-200fps),huge hard drives, huge multiplayer servers, dedicated servers, being able to upgrade, modding capabilities, larger selection of fps games,. Halo 1 is on par with half life 1 made 3 years earlier. Half life 2 and halo2 were made in the same year and aren't even worth comparing technologically. Look at crysis and halo 3......Crysis is the most advanced fps right now. I personally like the battlefield series game and I think that it is a much better multiplayer game than any halo. The new console games made a big jump with the 360 and PS3 but are still behind. However, buying graphics cards every 2 years is like buying a new console every 2 years. :(

Four player online co-op is going to be so awesome. I can't wait.
Also, FPS on computers will always be better on PC's than consoles. PC's just have better hardware, and you can also control your character more accurately and precicely using a keyboard and mouse vs a controller.

You can't deny the technological advantage that comes with play a fps on the PC, but here is the deal: The majority of the gaming public will not be able to keep up with the constant upgrade needs to continue to play these games.
Which, to me, isn't worth the effort anymore. Those new FPS only stay in mainstream popularity for 6 months at the MAX. And that is if another top notch games isn't released to steal its thunder. So why spend so much to upgrade and buy new games that don't stick around like a console games?
I really enjoyed the Battlefield games, but I didn't feel like buying another 2 or 3 expansion packs just to keep up with the elite.
I will stick with my console, where people are still playing Halo 2 even though it was released in 2004! You know a game is solid if it still draws after three years.
Oh, and you can be very accurate with a controller. Anyone familiar with the pistol in Halo 1 knows that. You just have to adjust the sensitivity (much like a PC). And if all else fails, some games now have the ability to take keyboard and mouse input (thats why they went to USB).

People will play games for years if multiplayer is good. BTW, expansion packs in battlefield aren't big sellers and the Elite players dont play them....I don't understand why you would have to play them to be Elite. There are TONS of people playing bf42 which came out in 2002. Now look at BF2, it came out in 2005 and is only second in online activity to WOW. There are thousands of servers still running. BF series stays alive so long because of mods that cost nothing.

Halo 3 Tops 1 Million Preorders: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/811/811803p1.html
Master Chief looms large, and the Spartan's sponsors fall in line.
by Ryan Geddes
August 9, 2007 - Halo 3: The Brand continues its consumer onslaught, racking up more than 1 million pre-orders so far, Microsoft said Thursday.
Flanked by corporate sponsors 7-Eleven, Burger King, Comcast, Mountain Dew and Pontiac, Master Chief is locked, loaded and ready to capture every last scrap of Earth's money.
According to Microsoft, Halo 3 is the fastest-selling preordered videogame ever and is backed by an unprecedented number of promotional partners.
"What we've experienced is nothing short of phenomenal," said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop. "Halo 3 has eclipsed many previous records and will prove to be one of the must-have items of 2007."
The Halo 3 Legendary Edition box set is expected to sell out completely by the game's Sept. 25 launch date. The $130 package comes with behind-the-scenes documentary footage, re-mastered cinematic material from the first two Halo games, exclusive Halo 2-powered Machinima and an unwearable Spartan helmet.
Gamers who can't afford the Legendary Edition's price tag can still buy Halo-themed soda, Halo-branded Slurpee cups, Burger King French fries surrounded by Halo images and tickets to the Halo-sponsored Projeckt Revolution concert series.
Apparently, there's a game too.

I honnestly don't get the Halo hype. I guess its just because FPS game on consoles never did it for me. They seem slower paced than the PC ones and I cant stand the dual analog sticks. Plus Halo doesn't hold a candle to the original Half-Life.

halo is a very good game overall....multiplayer is a blast.
you don't "get it" simply because you are partial to computer games.....nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean halo is not a very good game.
the dual analog sticks take a lot of getting used to, but once you do, it's very easy to use and very effective. i've played enough FPS's on consoles that it's second nature to me now, but again, it did take a lot of getting used to (and yes, before you ask, i've played a lot of FPS's on PC's as well - that's where i got my start in my love affair with FPS's).
and there's nothing "slower paced" about console FPS's overall vs. their PC counterparts. that comment doesn't really make much sense.
as far as halo vs. half-life, well that's simply a matter of opinion. if you're talking about the first halo, then i would agree that half-life is better. but if you're talking about halo 2, then i'd have to disagree. the multiplayer on halo 2 was fast, furious, and a helluva lot of fun (can't comment all that much on halo or halo 2 single player as i don't particularly enjoy single player games/modes).

dual analog will never give the performance of a mouse a keyboard. Ya you may get used to it to it will never offer the same level of control and precision.
What I meant by slow paced is most FPS on consoles seem to be slower moving stories and less action. I guess it could be due to the console not being able to handle as much action at one time as a PC. It may just be me but games like Unreal Tournament and Quake seem way faster paced in multiplayer than Halo. The movements are move fuild and responsive. I've played Halo and Halo 2 on PC and Xbox and they are good games dont get me wrong but I don't think they deserve all the hype they get.
It's mostly due to the fact that Halo is a good game on an affordable semi-high end gaming console. No I'm not biased for lacking of playing console games I have almost every console since the 2600 Atari(NES, SNES, SEGA, SEGACD, N64, Playstation, Xbox, Sega Saturn, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox360 and PS3) but to me the PC will always be better for FPS games. It gives better performance, graphics and movement.
Back to Halo, I think its a good game but certainly doesn't deserve all the hype. If you count the sequals and mods that valve owns: Half-Life, Half-Life Opposing Force, Half-Life Blue Shift, Team Fortress Classic, Couter-Strike, DoD, Half-Life 2, HL2:EP1, HL2:EP2(Portal and TF2) then Half-life is certainly just as good if not a far better game than Halo yet all the hype goes to Halo(which was originally going to be a PC game before the xbox and M$ buying Bungie)
Sorry for the rant lol I, nothing against the posters here I just get tired of the media circus and hype Halo gets.

Half-life(8mil) and Half-life 2(4mil) have combined for over 12million copies sold almost the same as Halo(5mil) and Halo 2(7mil) this isnt counting the numerous valve owned and created mods for HL:1 and and HL:2 or EP:1 and EP:2 for HL:2 not to mention the eventual HL:3. For its time Half-Life was revolutionary and introduced many thing to the gaming arena for the first time. HL:2 wasn't as good a game as HL:1 as far as story goes but the source engine it far superior to Halo 2. If you did count all the mods then Half-Life is probably the most played game in the world except for maybe StarCraft in Korea or World of WarCraft. Now I haven't said yet that Halo isn't a good game it is but its not on the level of Half-life

You almost sound like a PC fanboy standing on a shaky chair of an argument.
The HL2 vs Halo comparison is apples and oranges. The only thing in common is that they are FPS.
If the story isn't moving fast enough you should consider the fact that Halo is a Trilogy. They aren't trying to wrap up a story line in a single game. And if the story is not up to par, why are the books top selling? Why are they making a movie off those same books?
As far as game speed. Nothing is ever as fast as Unreal Tournament. That crap can send you into epilectic shock.
But Speed doesn't not always = fun. Unreal is great, but I wouldn't want all my games to play like that. Just like some people prefer sim racing versus arcade racing. Counterstrike was fantastic and it plays at about the same speed as Halo. Both try to simulate the speed that a normal person would move at.
And I wouldn't brag about the accuracy of the PC. In unreal everything is moving to damn fast to be accurate. That is spray and pray at its peak.
I think you just havn't taken the time to experience Halo properly. Let go of your PC bias and relax into the wonderful world of playing games on multiple platforms.
Obviously, I can think of over a million people that already would disagree with your stance. Halo is a fantastic game and deserves the press.
Thank you Bungie.

lol ya I almost got a 32X but that was about the time I started getting into PC games. The controller ports on my SEGA Genesis are worn out from so much use they won't even recognize the controllers anymore lol. I've just gone to emulating pretty much every console up to the PS2. I really miss some Eternal Champions and Sonic though.

Halo 3: Burn, Baby! Burn!
Roast some marshmallows or some Covenant with the flamethrower. First screen and details on the weenie-roaster.
by Hilary Goldstein
August 10, 2007 - It's one of the most infamous screenshots in Xbox history. An early screen grab showed Master Chief wielding a flamethrower. That awesome weapon never made it into the original Halo or Halo 2, much to the chagrin of fans. Good news Halo faithful, Master Chief will finish the fight packing the ultimate Covenant toasting device. The flamethrower has made its way into Halo 3. You may now call in sick the week of September 25.
Along with first details on the flamethrower, Bungie also revealed a new incendiary grenade, the firebomb. With these two weapons -- featured in both the campaign and multiplayer -- gamers can set the Halo universe on fire.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flamethrower
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bungie originally planned to include the flamethrower in Halo 2, but decided its removal was necessary. "It wasn't just balance in Halo 2, it was also performance," Bungie lead writer Frank O'Connor told IGN. "Obviously the 360 makes things like that significantly easier. In Halo 3, we can control where it goes a lot better. [The flamethrower] obviously features a lot in campaign. But in multiplayer it doesn't have to be in every multiplayer playlist and map." And if Bungie finds that the flamethrower is overpowering a map or gametype, it can easily be removed.
The flamethrower does things that just weren't possible in Halo 2. This is, more or less, a living flame. "If you shoot a pillar, the liquid in the flamethrower will adhere to it and burn there," O'Connor explained. "Likewise with the floor and with bad guys. It will cause continual damage to a vehicle. When the flames start to cool down and evaporate, it stops causing damage. If you're lucky enough to keep it on a Warthog, then you will in fact take it down with a flamethrower."
For those who have grown fond of the bubble shield, O'Connor confirmed that the gadget will provide safe haven from fire. "It will wash over the shield. It will actually burn on the surface of the shield."
In the words of Crank's Jason Statham, "How f***ing awesome was that?"
The flamethrower does come at a bit of a cost. The bursts last just three seconds and you'll need to pump the trigger once a burst dries out. This is a turret weapon, like the missile pod. That means you'll be controlling it in a third-person view and will move slowly.

For anyone who has played the co-op, is it basically all integrated? What I mean to say is, is it seamless in that my friend can join up at any time? also, if I have say 2 others playing with me, will we still see the cutscenes between missions? I know in Rainbow 6 Vegas, you could do co-op, but they didn't show any of the cutscenes so you missed out on the storyline.

I thought that the 3 instalment of Halo was pretty good. The game was pretty long and took me about 10 hours or so to beat. I was a tad disappointed in the story line, especially the ending. However that game is very good, and the graphics are simply stunning!
The multi-player mode is great, and much better than Halo 2, IMO. I don't really care for the way that Bungie changed the territories objective game, but it's still fun.
Overall I give the game about an 8.5 out of 10.

OK, so I know this probably the nerdiest thing I've ever done, but I started messing with the "Theater" deal on Halo 3, and discovered that every co-op campaign mission that I did with a buddy of mine was recorded. I went through and took a bunch of screens from them. here are the top 3. The first was from the next to last mission where you're fighting the Flood on the High Charity, and the second two are from the part of the 7th mission where you have to fight two giant scarab thingies... I don't see why they wouldn't do a PC version. I remember seeing Halo 1 and 2 for PC not too long after they were released for Xbox360. Hopefully you'll get your wish. I kinda regret not getting much into the first two games now that I've really gotten into the 3rd. The story seems pretty neat.

It will be much more than a 3 month delay. More like a year or two. Halo 2 for Vista was finally released early this year, if my memory serves me correctly, just about the same time as Shadowrun, which would make it early May 2007. Halo 2 originally came out in November 2004 on Xbox.
Historically, Microsoft has made very little money on PC ports of Halo. It's just not a traditional PC shooter. It will happen eventually, but I can't see it happening until holiday 2008 at the earliest.

Halo 3 Sells Over 3 Million Units in 12 Days
Master Chief buys a house in the Hamptons and sails around the world.
by Ryan Geddes
October 18, 2007 - A little Bungie game called Halo 3 owned the videogame marketplace in September, selling nearly twice as many units as its nine closest competitors combined, according to monthly sales figures released by the NPD Group today.
The third chapter in Master Chief's tale of alien woe sold 3.3 million units in the 12 days it was on sale last month, a figure that includes the Standard, Collector's and Legendary editions. Intense interest in Halo 3 also spurred sales of the Xbox 360, helping Microsoft move more than 527,000 units in September.
"Halo 3 posted phenomenal results for just 12 days of sales in the month of September. True to its name, the game rubbed off on hardware sales too - the Xbox 360 realized it's best month ever in unit hardware sales outside last holiday season," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "If ever there was a doubt that great content drives hardware acquisition, this should put that doubt to rest."
But the Xbox 360 wasn't last month's only hardware winner. The Nintendo Wii had its second-best month ever, selling more than 500,000 units despite having no Spartans on its roster. The DS also sold almost 500,000 units in September, the PSP moved about 285,000 and the PS2 outsold the PS3 - with 215,000 and 119,000 units of those systems selling respectively.
In terms of units, overall console hardware sales in September jumped 124 percent over the same month last year, from about 613,000 to 1.37 million.
"Although we've been confident for many months now that the industry was poised to realize it's best year ever in terms of revenue, the results in recent months makes me even more bullish," Frazier said. "I believe the U.S. videogame industry will realize somewhere in the range of $17 to $18 billion for the year".
Total videogame sales - for both hardware and software - in September were $1.36 billion, a 74 percent increase from last September's $778.7 million figure. Of the top ten highest-selling games in September, four were Xbox 360 titles, two were Wii titles, two were DS titles and the PS3 and PS2 had one apiece. Here's how the top ten ranked:
1. HALO 3 (360) - 3.3 million units
2. PLAY W/ REMOTE (Wii) - 282,000
3. LEGEND OF ZELDA: PHANTOM HOURGLASS (DS) - 224,000
4. MADDEN NFL 08 (PS2) - 205,000
5. SKATE (360) - 175,000
6. MADDEN NFL 08 (360) - 173,000
7. METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION (WII) - 167,000
8. BIOSHOCK (360) - 150,000
9. BRAIN AGE 2 (DS) - 141,000
10. HEAVENLY SWORD (PS3) - 139,000

November 16, 2007 - If you buy an Xbox 360 before Dec. 21, Microsoft will send you a free copy of Halo 3, the company announced today.
According to the official Xbox web site, gamers who buy a new console between now and the deadline, sign up for a new Xbox Live account and register their systems with Microsoft will receive a copy of Halo 3 in their mailboxes.
The game will arrive by Jan. 18, Microsoft said.
The deal isn't combinable with other Microsoft offers or rebates and is limited to one submission per person.
Hear that? That's the sound of a million holiday wish lists exploding.
Update: This morning, Xbox.com was advertising this initiative on its Halo 3 Deals & Promotions page. By this afternoon, however, the page was gone. This link to the promotion's registration page still works, though. We've contacted Microsoft for clarification on the deal, and we'll let you know more as soon as possible.

If you finish the campaign on easy, normal, or heroic you will see one ending. if you finish the last mission from the beginning without starting at any of the checkpoints you will see a continued ending after the credits. i must say you will need some patience as it takes a bit to get to the ending. i suggest once you get in the warthog at the end just go the shortest route and be careful! good luck!:shotgunc:

OK so I checked youtube and found the video of the ending...I knew they couldn't kill off Master Chief and not leave the door open for a Halo 4. Bungie would be stupid not to. There has been so much money made off of the Halo franchise...think about that. Between game sales, XBox live subscriptions and other stuff they make money off of...man, it's pretty ridiculous.

Some say bungie will make a halo-like game called Marathon based on the old 1995 one. Some also say that Halo 3 will be the last one ever. I doubt it and hope it's not.

I have Halo 3, and play online sparingly. Add me, FoxQuickstrike. I'm stuck on GTAIV right now, but if I see you on Halo I'll hit you up.
Anyone play Turok online?

When is Halo 4 expected?
Halo Wars some out soon, but its an RTS, in other words...gay.
But HALO 4...well, since Bungie split from Microsoft, I'd say....never.
Was Halo 3 considered a success sales wise?

Spur:
EGM says in the rumor section this month that Bungie is working on the next Halo (they have a contract for at least 3 more games for Microsoft, and in one of their recent podcasts they mention that they can't imagine ever not working with microsoft--they are essentially like Insomniac and Naughty Dog is to Sony), but that the next Halo will not be Halo 4
It will instead be a prequel detailing Humanity's first contact with the Covenant, and it will be a third-person, squad-based shooter.
And as far as sales go, Halo 3 was definitely a success, I believe it set the 1 day record for sales in dollars for a video game (taking it from Halo 2) (but not in units, I don't think, because they had $120 versions with helmets), but I think that record was recently broken by Smash Bros. or GTA IV
