ok, this guy is tall and skinny 6'6, 215....what collegiate position (and where is he headed?) will he play? He's listed as DE, but that's a tad skinny....
let's discuss

I could see him adding muscle and maybe becoming at TE. He still has growing to do. He maybe could be a speed rush end, kinda like a Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins. He is no Jason Taylor and I didn't mean it to sound like that. His build and the way he plays would be similar.

^^ thats A LOT of weight for him to put on in a year and a half ... esp since hes got a teenager's metabolism and hes not in a college strength and conditioning program ...
he looks like hes got the frame for it ... have we offered?

Julius Peppers was about the same size at that age. of course he was also 285 when recruited by the Terdheels.

I would agree if he is 215 now and has the frame for it that he should be somewhere around 240 by senior year.
He could be one of those talented 3-4 OLB/4-3 DE that are so great to have kinda like cliff mathews.

DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) of Beaufort has scheduled his first official visit for November 30th at Duke. The Shrine Bowl selection said he also will set visits with USC and Virginia Tech. His other offers are Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Furman, Citadel, SC State, Presbyterian and Buffalo. Taylor talked with his USC recruiter Shane Beamer Monday. "They really want me there," Taylor said adding that all the schools are recruiting him about the same. He does not claim a favorite. Thru ten games Taylor has about 60 tackles and 10 sacks.
-- I'll take a speedy DE that averages a sack per game. Get him in and get some weight on him while keeping his speed and we'll have a beast.

I would like him less due to the stats and more due to his frame. He can really put on some weight since he is 6'6. Given a redshirt year and he would be up to 250 or so with probably another 20 pounds he can put on. I like the idea of having someone who could potentially be a beast. Does anyone know how much he can bench and his 40?

Some listed stats:
Ht: 6-foot-6
Wt: 215 lbs
Forty: 4.7 secs
Bench max: 220 pounds
Squat max: 315 pounds
GPA: 3.45
SAT: 1030

Definitely looks like a smart kid. He sure looks young but at my age they all look young.

You guys in the Cola area can see him at WB this Friday vs Clover in the AAAA Div II State Championship game.
Presently, Devin looks heavier than 215. He is very quick off the ball, plays the run well and can go to pass coverage. He has also lined up at TE, which shows he has skills and coordination.
He reminds me of a young John Abraham. He will need to bulk and should be a starter by his RS Soph year. Would be an excellent pickup for us.

Taylor Makes USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) of Beaufort played for a state championship Friday night at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. While his teammates returned to the coast, Taylor remained behind in Columbia for his official visit to USC. The visit went well but Taylor did not commit. He wants to take his official visit to Virginia Tech in January before he makes a decision. He also has been looking at Duke and Wake Forest

Has anyone heard anything lately about this young man?
He is a recruit that I would love to see end up in the Garnet and Black.
He is an athletic 6'6'' and smart to boot.
With who we have returning at DE, I think we could easily afford a redshirt year for him.
He's already had his official visit and his in-home with Lawing and SOS. He will take a trip to VT, who would like to land him, this month.
Any scoop?
And do we have any other DE's committed in this class? I know we're looking at Crowder, who's a possible sign and place if he doesn't get in this year. Who else?

Gamecocks Meet With Taylor
By Phil Kornblut
USC recruiters Shane Beamer, Brad Lawing and Brian VanGorder spent much of Wednesday along the coast of South Carolina. The three met in the afternoon with Fort Dorchester LB Robert Quinn, then made the drive up the coast to Beaufort to meet with DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220). That meeting went well for the Gamecocks who remain the favorite to land Taylor. Taylor will visit Duke this weekend and NC State on the MLK Holiday. He has visited USC and Wake Forest. Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe also met with Taylor today as did his recruiter from NC State.

One More Visit For Taylor
By Phil Kornblut
DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) of Beaufort will visit Virginia Tech this weekend with his mother his coach Mark Clifford said Friday. Taylor has a basketball game in Summerville Friday night and he and his mother will leave from them after the game. Taylor was visited Thursday by Duke coach David Cutcliffe. NC State coach Tom O'Brien was in on Wednesday. Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer plans to visit Monday. USC coach Steve Spurrier and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe have had their in person visit. "One think weighing heavy on this decision is the engineering major," Clifford said. "He's putting a lot of weight on the engineering major. That's one think hurting Wake. I think he's going to announce after this weekend, probably on February 1st." Taylor has not indicated a favorite but USC is beleived to be the front runner.

Published: January 27, 2008
DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) OF Beafort visited Virginia Tech over the weekend with his mother. "It was a good visit," Taylor said. "I liked the buildings. I also liked the coaches and the feeling I got from them. I also liked the atmosphere." Taylor also has visited USC, NC State, Wake Forest and Duke but the Demon Deacons are no longer a factor. Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer will make his in home visit Monday. All the other head coaches have been in. Taylor said he does not have a favorite and is not sure when he'll make his decision.
I think we have a great shot at this kid. Bringing in Taylor and Harbin would add the much needed depth to our DE position.

Taylor Down To Final Two
By Phil Kornblut
It's Beamer vs Beamer for Beaufort DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220). Taylor has cut his list to USC and Virginia Tech and he will have his announcement Monday according to his coach Mark Clifford. Taylor met this afternoon with Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer for 30-45 minutes. Later in the afternoon USC coaches Shane Beamer, Frank's son, Brad Lawing and Ellis Johnson met with Taylor. Beamer is USC's lead recruiter with Taylor. Taylor made his official visit to Virginia Tech over the weekend. He also took visits to Wake Forest, NC State and Duke.

we need depth on the DL ... staggered depth. You have to look at the numbers in terms of RSs, not year recruited (IMO)
Harbin Taylor Davis all RS in 08 IMO
Pepper and hall are about to graduate
Byrd will likely move inside to DT (and IMO he will RS)
King has the size to move inside, but i hear hes going to be a DE
that leaves us who?
T Rob, Geathers, Matthews - all played in 07
McKnight, Nicholls - RSd 07
Norwood is in the class above them he will be a Jr i think
The twins' last year is 08 - both Srs
Will4144

I think Jarriel King and Ronald Byrd will move inside. I guess it's according to if Ellis Johnson likes pass rushers or run stoppers better at DE.

And i heard King is a perfect fit for SS DE. The same spot pepper played against UGA. Having those two switch off would be insane. And then have norwood and geathers on the other side. Or T Rob or Cliff i mean Damn i think we are going to have a great defense next year i dont care who the D Cordinator is. How could you mess that up? Especially if everyone is healthy.
Devin Taylor also has the speed to play OLB at his current weight kinda like what cliff did last year.

next year we will have a young ingram at the LB rotation and he will take over japs spot after that

if we can get another Casper and Jasper in the next class (solid guys who are physically ready) we would be well advised to do so

Virginia Tech No Option For Taylor
By Phil Kornblut
DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) of Beaufort no longer has Virginia Tech on his list because the Hokies filled up their commitment class over the weekend according to his coach Mark Clifford. "I would think South Carolina is now int he lead," Clifford said. "I talked to his mom Friday and they really love Wake Forest, but the engineering thing hurts them." Taylor plans to major in engineering. Taylor, who plans to announce his choice Monday at a 3:00 news conference, still has Wake and Duke as possibilities according to Clifford.

two reasons why they took this kid, first the kid had 90 somen tackles and had 17 sacks, not to bad IMO.

I think devin is going to be one of the biggest sleepers in this class. This kid can really move to be 6'6 225lbs, by his redshirt sophmore year this kid is going to be a stud if not sooner. Look past the three star rating on this kid, he going to be a good one.

A Busy Monday Is Ahead
By Phil Kornblut
The new week should get off to a good start for Clemson and USC. Both expect to land commitments this afternoon. The Tigers now appear to be the favorites for TE Dwayne Allen (6-4 240) of Fayetteville, NC. Allen has been committed to Georgia and early in the weekend it appeared he would stay with that commitment. But Sunday afternoon evidence began to mount that Clemson would be his choice. Allen will make his announcement at a 1:00 PM news conference at his school. Two hours later USC should get the good news from DE Devin Taylor (6-6 220) of Beaufort. He has scheduled a news conference at his school and is expected to commit to the Gamecocks. USC's strongest competition going into the weekend was Virginia Tech but the Hokies filled out their class with their final commitments. Taylor also has considered Wake Forest and Duke. And the Gamecocks could land another commitment today since WR Tommy Streeter (6-5 200) of Miami did not make an announcement last night as he had planned. Streeter made an official visit to Miami over the weekend. He and his family started their deliberations around 6:00 PM with a plan to announce a choice between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM. That announcement never came. It could come today. Streeter is expected to pick either USC or Miami.

While South Carolina coaches awaited word from Miami receiver Tommy Streeter, they received good news from a player closer to home.
Devin Taylor, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound defensive end committed to the Gamecocks on Monday during a brief announcement at Beaufort High. Taylor, who chose USC over Duke, becomes the eighth instate player to commit to USC.
“I had a good feeling about the school, the academic side and the athletic side,” Taylor said. “I got to know the players and coaches. I could pretty much see myself there the next four or five years.”
USC remains in the mix for Streeter, a four-star prospect believed to be choosing among Miami, South Florida and the Gamecocks.
Taylor, who has a 3.67 grade point average and scored a 1030 the first time he took the SAT, hopes to study either electrical or computer engineering at USC, according to his mother. Sylvia Cuyler said her son has always had an affinity for math homework and Lego toys.
“I’ve watched him put stuff together and take stuff apart,” Cuyler said. “I said, ‘Well, try engineering.’”
Taylor has tried to maintain a balance at Beaufort, where he also plays basketball and runs track while juggling a school schedule that includes several honors-level classes.
“He’s always been a good student,” said Cuyler, a single mother who works in the inventory department at a Home Depot in Bluffton.
Taylor, a Shrine Bowl selection who is considered a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, narrowed his college choices to USC, Duke and Virginia Tech in recent weeks.
The USC-Virginia Tech recruiting battle matched Gamecocks assistant coach Shane Beamer against his father, Hokies coach Frank Beamer. Cuyler said the two visited Beaufort High the same day last week about five minutes apart.
After Virginia Tech backed off Taylor, he decided to stay instate — although proximity was not a deciding factor.
“I told him not to weigh that as an option, because wherever he went, I would still see him play,” Cuyler said.
How soon Taylor plays at USC remains to be seen. Given his lean frame, he could be a redshirt candidate.
“Both of my kids have always been tall,” said Cuyler, who has a daughter who is out of school. “I always noticed I had to buy bigger pants for (Taylor’s) legs, then stitch them up in the waist because he’s always been slim.”
But Cuyler said the Gamecock coaches are confident Taylor will bulk up when he gets to Columbia and finds the weight room.
“They’re not making it a big deal because he’s still growing,” she said. “The coaches are saying he won’t fill out until his time has come.”
