i am sure there are some here that have their game console hooked to a large(36"+) hd tv (flat panel). what kind of quality are you getting out of these setups? please describe how you have it hooked up also. i considering purchasing a new game console and want some real user opinion. thanks in advance.

not trying to hook anything up yet. i haven't purchased the console. debating between the 360 and ps3. i'll be hooking it to a 40" bravia (1080i) probably through hdmi (if the consoles have that capability). just wanted to know folks' experiences.

If you purchase the 360, go ahead and spend the money to get the HDMI cable if your TV accepts that connection.

i have a 42in AVOL plasma that they sell here on base for about $1500, and its hooked up to the 360...by far the best console. but if you are looking to get a blu-ray disk player down the road go for the ps3...it'll save you money since it comes with the blu-ray player!

Microsoft is behind HD-DVD, which I think will win the "war". You can get a HD-DVD add-on for you 360. I do not know how much.

$179
I have my 360 hooked up through VGA cables to my 50" Samsung DLP. Would've gone HDMI, but it wasn't yet available. My 360 still upscales old DVDs to 1080p, so I'm happy.

Not only is it $179, but you also get 5 FREE HD-DVDs when you puchase it. Thats not including the King Kong that it comes with. Great deal IMO!

the 360 will play hd - dvds and upscale non-hd dvds to 1080i? is that a clean conversion?

Monoprice has HDMI cables for less than 10$. They are all the same.

Some new ones will play HD-DVD, but most you need an external drive that you buy. HD-DVD runs at 1080p which is better than 1080i.

And just what leads you to believe this (besides the fact you own a 360 and would love for it to be true)?

Microsoft and Intel are behind HD-DVD, though I will say that Blu-Ray has a lot of backing from electronics manufacturers. I think in the end the software and microchip giants will prevail. We will see. It is a hunch more than anything. I personally have not bought one yet because of this. Anyone remember the VHS v. Beta wars?

Well instead of speculating so much, we could just look at the facts like current sales figures of each device. Just sayin'.

What's wrong with speculating? This isn't a wiki site.
I thought this was a good comparison.

This is a good page with movie sales of both.

This year so far has Stand-alone HD DVD players out selling Stand Alone Blu Ray players. Blu Ray is currently ahead in movie sales due to the PS3 install base.

Stand-alone is the key word. I just don't buy the "blu-ray is only winning because of the gamers"...because there are plenty of consumers who recognize that the PS3 is a bargain buy on a blu-ray player so they buy it for that exact reason alone in many situations.
Just like a movie company, tech company, or whatever can influence whether a certainly disc technology can survive or fail...so can a gaming system. At least I would think so from what we have seen so far. Time will tell how far it will carry it.

The problem with that reasoning is that not that many people are buying PS3s. You have about 100k per month being sold and most people who own them don't use them for HD video.

Yes -- you can play HD-DVD's and DVDs at 1080p. Now, remember that a standard def DVD won't look like and HD-DVD in the HD drive, but it will look better than your average DVD player. Keep in mind, though, that the only way to take advantage of Xbox 360's upscaling capabilities is to have it hooked up through HDMI/VGA.

Both are easy to hook up and will look great. If you want alot of games to choose from go with the 360. It may take a little while for the ps3 to catch up. However, if you want it more for multimedia go with the PS3. It has built in bluray, 5 free blurays, dvd upscaler, wifi card built in, no internet fees, internet browser, you can transfer data (mp3's or movies) with a usb thumbdrive or any flash drive. Except for the upscaler, these are features that the 360 does not have.

both ps3 and 360 will. They both upscale also

The real kicker for HD-DVD is the porn industry is behind it. Just like back in the day when Beta and VHS were battling porn backed VHS even though Beta quality is better and everyone had a VCR in their house.

How is HD-DVD winning that war? I am seriously asking too...I haven't kept up with the latest on what the Porn industry is doing with HD/BlueRay

Yeah and that was what year? The porn industry, in my opinion, is rather irrelevant in 2007. Who buys porn vids anymore? You can get that with the click of a mouse.

there isn't much to explain really. it's just like having a laptop with a wireless card built-in. if you are near a wireless signal (your own at your house, or one in your neighborhood, etc) then it will pick it up and you can browse the internet on your PS3.

oh that's right. you gotta go into your network settings on the PS3 home and changed your connection settings to wireless. remember though, if no one is broadcasting a wireless signal near you...you aren't gonna connect to anything. it said there was no ethernet cord attached because you i think the default setting is a wired connection, and that obviously requires one.

In the HOME menu, go to Settings...then Network Settings. Then select Internet Connection Settings. Select "Wireless". It should then scan to find any wireless signal being broadcasted. Select one and continue.
The only problem you might run into is if you are required to enter an SSID in. I am not sure if you HAVE to connect to one that is security enabled, but if so- you're gonna have a problem- cause you'll have to know that...

This is no longer true. All 360s are now being manufactured with HDMI.
