We don't expect every developer to love the PS3, but we do expect a wee bit of effort. There has been a lot of whining concerning Sony's new platform - it was the same way with the PS2 - but the whining has lessened over the course of 2007, and more developers are seeing the light. One of them (who wasn't "whining" to begin with) is Activision, who threw Sony some respect a few days ago.

Speaking at last week's Web 2.0 Summit conference in the U.S., Activision chairman and CEO, Robert Kotick, told an audience member that he thinks the PlayStation 3 is the "most advanced gaming platform available." At the same time, though, he had to add something we all knew was true- "few game developers were building products that take full advantage of the console's powerful, multicore processor." On the other hand, Kotick said the future was bright; all this would change in "the next four or five years." (quote source: Spong)

Activision is a lot like EA; they simply make multiplatform games to get the most out of their investments. Obviously, the PS3 is included in most of their productions thus far, so maybe they're more comfortable than others with the system's complex architecture. Those who are tend to praise the console's potential while admitting it's very difficult to work with, and that's exactly what Activision is doing here. Well, we certainly can't wait for those "next four or five years," that's for sure.

next four or five years? heck, the ps4 will just about be out by then.....

let's face it, game systems (all game systems) have a fairly short lifespan nowadays.

I have always wondered when the PS4 would come out

Heard 5 years and 8 years, etc...

i would guess it'll be somewhere in the ballpark of 5-7 years after the ps3 launch......what would that put it, between '11 and '13?

i'd bet on closer to 5-6 years though, rather than 7-8.

Sony says 10 years. My guess is that their hands will be forced when Nintendo or Microsoft puts out something new in 2011-2012.

I would worry for sony if they wait ten years to launch a new system.

While I am 360 fan, there is no way that system's life span will make it that long.

I think Microsoft will squeeze 3 maybe 4 more years out of the 360 before they bring another console out. That will have to force something from the Sony side. They can't start the next console war a year behind Microsoft. (as current sales would indicate)

Yeah but Microsoft can't count on people buying a new console every 5 years because theirs maxes out so quickly. Hell the Wii maxed out the day it came out in my opinion. The PS3 has by far the most potential of the next-gen and will give the most bang for your buck.

True, but you will always have loyal customers (fanboys really) and folks who just have the latest rage in gaming. If the PS3 is good for another 3 years past the 360, but the new M$ rig (lets say Xbox 720) is alot more powerful, then Sony will have to put something against it. Even if its only been 5 years since 360 launch, lots of folks will buy the biggest/baddest.

Considering that the normal life span for a video game console is 5 to 6 years, I think they pretty much CAN count on fans buying the latest and greatest.

as long as the new system actually supports the previous gen's games, I'm all for it. I'm still pissed that I had to trade in all my old games because the 360 wouldn't support them. I have a lot more invested in games for my 360 than I did my xbox.
