Soundtrack to include a trio of 360-exclusive downloads.
by Hilary Goldstein
October 15, 2007 - Interscope Records is giving fans what they've always asked for from a downloadable song pack. Those who pay the extra cash to download songs have hoped for the day when they could also have a regular version of the track along with the game version. That's now a reality with the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Companion Pack.

Set for release on October 23, just a week before the launch of Guitar Hero III, the Companion Pack includes select songs from Activision's latest game and three exclusive songs. The CD comes with a download code that can be entered on Xbox Live Marketplace for access to three additional Guitar Hero III songs.

Soundtrack

"Miss Murder" by AFI

"Kool Thing" by Sonic Youth

"3's and 7's" by Queens of the Stone Age

"Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins

"Slither" by Velvet Revolver

"Cult of Personality" by Living Colour

"Prayer for the Refugee" by Rise Against

"Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels (Steve Ouimette rendition)

"Guitar Hero III Intro" by Slash

Bonus DLC
"Carcinogen Crush" by AFI

"Tina" by Flyleaf

"Putting Holes in Happiness" a Marilyn Manson song remixed by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Guitar Hero III: Companion Pack retails for $13.98. It's unknown if the bonus tracks will be made available for later download on Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network.

I may have to get this... I was going to wait on Rockband, but since that wont be out 'til black friday, I think I'll spring for this...

I may just have to get suckered into this. I was a little upset when they picked Miss Murder by AFI instead of one of their much better guitar laced tracks, but as soon as I just saw Carcinogen Crush, that alone may make me stay with Microsoft

I played it a bit tonight before heading to work, it's pretty fun. A definite borrow/rental for me. I wouldn't mind paying the $60 for just the game, but I know I'm getting Mass Effect (60) and Rockband ($170) on the same day. Gonna just hold fast and spend my money on those.

I figure if I'm lucky maybe even Blockbuster will carry GH3, but I doubt it.

Great game. Much better song selection than the previous 3 games. The boss battles are a fun (yet VERY frustrating) addition to the game. Outside of the final boss battle (which I still can't beat, dammit), the only song that seems really difficult is Raining Blood. Very, very tough song. I failed it at like 36% on my sightread.

The hammer-ons will take some getting used to...especially when they're star power notes. They're more difficult to see than in previous games.

Wow what a game, finally 5* all the hard songs.

Took me forever to beat "Lou" (the devil) in "The Devil Went Down To Georgia"

Also, that song is one of the most fun songs to play, ever!

ON TO EXPERT!

Ok, so I broke down at got it yesterday (Sunday), and I'm pretty happy with it. I forget which setlist I'm on, but it's the one with that dumb 3's&7's song, and the Disturbed song. I'm stuck on Knight's of Cydonia. I'm gonna have to practice that one a bit before I can beat it. I hate to see what the last setlist and boss battle looks like. Took me 4 trys to get Slash. I may have to go back to medium and play through to the last setlist just to beat that tour. Doubt I'll be seeing expert anytime soon.

After failing the final boss battle 5 or 6 times last night, I gave up on it.....and then beat it my first try tonight. All in all, I think the hardest career mode song on Expert is Raining Blood...the Mosh 1 section gave me all kinds of trouble. And, for bonus songs, Dragonforce's Through the Fire and Flames is unbelievably difficult. I can't get past the intro on expert yet, so I've played it on hard a few times and beaten it. Very tough.

So far I'd to say my favorite song to play is Stricken and 2nd place would be the ZZ Top Song. Only on Hard, of course. I need to learn how to strum up and down on time if I'm ever going to nail these songs. HOPO's are no problem, but fast switching chords and doublestrumming kill me.

I can't even imagine doing a Dragon force song with all that fast strumming.

Gyle, any technique you use to master the up/down strumming. Don't tell my you strum in one direction during all those fast passages?

Utilize practice mode...take a section of a song you're struggling with, set it on slowest, then play it until you get 100%, and so on, until you can do it consistently at full speed.

Lots of practice really helps...alt-strumming is SO much easier when you know the rhythm of the song. It's a discipline thing, but with time, it gets easier, trust me.

That was my first thought. I can alt-strum on songs I know pretty well, so I guess it's really down to just listening to the song and getting the rhythm down.

One more question, when you play do you normall alt-strum every note, or just the fast passages. I'm just curious, I guess it really could be either way. I down strum on easier/single note passages and then I double strum when the notes are so close that I can't keep up w/ the pace w/ single strum.

I usually only alt-strum when it's a fast part, but a lot of times I'll do it if it's just a long stream of repeated notes (like Monkey Wrench in GH2). And a lot of times if my arm gets tired I'll up-strum instead of down-strum.

Breaking down the song and learning the rhythm is key...all it takes is a few tries before you get comfortable with it and it gets really easy.

Cool man, thanks for the tips. I wasn't really all that interested in GH3 to be honest, but when I played with the Gison wireless controller, I was hooked. I was just going to go with Rockband, but now I'll have the new Strat for guitar on Rockband, and a sweet Gibson for bass. :D

This Guitar Hero is def. the hardest one to this point. I'm stuck on the last tier with Slayer, Metallica, and Iron Maiden still giving me trouble on hard mode. I've never had trouble with a hard song before, always expert mode until now. The Metallica solo is crazy, that wall of triplets kills me every time, even with star power.

Finally beat all three today somehow. Iron Maiden is a breeze if you can get the intro down. Slayer was just using star power in the first hard part and so was Metallica during the solo. A few times in the practice mode did it for all three. Now I'm getting it handed to me by Lou with the Devil Went Down To Georgia duel...no practice mode for that...

I stopped at the last setlist on hard, it was killing. Went back and beat it on Medium. Will start practicing songs on hard now. I wanted to unlock all songs for multiplayer and quickplay.

Dragonforce is a sweet song; too bad it's hard as hell!

You guys are awesome. I am still rolling along on EASY. I tried 1 song on medium and decided to take it one step at a time. One thing I like about the set list is the way it gradually introduces you to the different rythms which makes the songs you have previously beaten easier to play. I can't even imagine HARD at this point. Particularly in career mode because many of the songs that I play perfectly in practice, I start to screw up in career mode.

wait until you play "through the fire and flames" by dragonforce, anti......ridiculously hard.

i am not awesome at this game by any stretch of the imagination.....i can get a perfect score on pretty much every song on EASY. i can kill some songs on MEDIUM and do pretty well on most others.....and i can beat a lot of songs on HARD, but with around 80-90% accuracy.

problem is, the songs that i can't beat on HARD really, really kick the crap out of me.....for instance, i failed out of "through the fire and flames" on HARD at 3%!!!! and some of the songs later in the set lists are just about as bad if i try to play them on HARD....

i just play to have fun, not to beat the game.......if i can get through a song on HARD, then i'll play it there, but if i have to drop to MEDIUM to get through one, then that's cool with me.

Through the Fire and Flames is crazy on anything past medium. I have been playing the Guitar Hero series since it came out and nothing like that has ever been done on any of the games to this point. I have beaten everything on expert(songlist, not including bonus tracks) on previous games but even hard mode gave me some difficulty for the last tier. I have still yet to beat the battle with Lou on hard but have already played the first few tiers on Expert.

The one thing I don't like about the game is how unequally difficult some of the songs are. Lou always gets his battle handicaps before you making it nearly impossible for you to get yours. I can perfect songs on medium and get close on hard, but Lou is in another universe from the rest of the setlist.

All I've got left is the final battle on expert (STILL) and Through the Fire and Flames on expert. Everything else is done. I hit something like 88% of the notes on TtFaF on Hard, but I fail at 1% on Expert, lol. I'll take the intro into practice mode and learn how to tap it, I suppose.

The battle with Lou is intense...I thought I had him beat last nice but I accidentally tilted too much trying the sweeps and activated double notes too soon. He then hit me with a lefty flip on a nasty part of the solo, and there's no way I can do that.

I feel you dude. If you really wanna get good, it's all about strengthening your fnigers. Sounds lame but it helped me, lol. Also, once you do it long enough your muscle memory kicks in and it's that much easier.

I'm gonna try "Hyper Speed" on some hard songs later and see if that helps me out. Alot of people think it's cheating, and I guess they're kinda right, but it helps me because when the notes scroll faster, they're farther apart so that I can differenciate between them easier.

Here are "cheats" for Guitar Hero III (all consoles)

Air Guitar: (YB) (GY) (GY) (RB) (RB) (RY) (RY) (YB) (GY) (GY) (RB) (RB) (RY) (RY) (GY) (GY) (RY) (RY)

Hyperspeed: OBOYOBOY

Performance Mode: (RY) (RB) (RO) (RB) (RY) (GB) (RY) (RB)

Precision Mode: (GR) (GR) (GR) (RY) (RY) (RB) (RB) (YB) (YO) (YO) (GR) (GR) (GR) (RY) (RY) (RB) (RB) (YB) (YO) (YO)

Unlock All Songs: (YO) (RB) (RO) (GB) (RY) (YO) (RY) (RB) (GY) (GY) (YB) (YB) (YO) (YO) (YB) Y R (RY) R Y O

Air Guitar will show your player on the screen with no guitar

Hyperspeed makes the notes scroll faster, but with more space in between them. Some say it's easier, some say it's harder. I say it depends on which one you start out on. There are 5 levels of hyperspeed. You can adjust those from the cheats menu.

Performance Mode is when the fretboard with notes does not show up, and you play it from memory. I would not suggest entering this code unless you have note charts memorized.

Precision Mode makes the timing window to hit notes smaller...So if you're looking for a bit more of a challenge, give it a shot.

Unlock All Songs unlocks bonus songs that you would have to earn. You can't save anything while this code is entered. Songs you unlock are

All the bonus songs that you can buy from the store
Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce

And Encores in Co-Op mode:
Sabotage by the Beastie Boys
Reptilia by the Strokes
Suck my Kiss by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll by Blue Oyster Cult
Helicopter by somebody I can't remember
Monsters by somebody else I can't remember

There are still 3 unknown cheats out there, so I'll update you guys when they're available. One of them should be a Rock Meter cheat that keeps the Rock Meter in green throughout the song, meaning you cannot fail.

Gyle41386
11-02-2007, 02:25 AM
By the way, the Air Guitar code is the riff from Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Performance Mode is the riff from One

Precision Mode is the riff from Rock You Like a Hurricane

Unlock All contains parts of Canon Rock, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the Star Spangled Banner.

360 and PS3 users will have a Bret Michaels cheat where the Poison frontman will replace that awful looking lead singer on every song, PS2 and Wii users will have a code called Large Gems, but we're not sure what that will do just yet.

So with Bret Michaels/Large Gems and Rock Meter, that leaves us with one unknown cheat. A cheat for flaming heads in the audience has already been proven to be false.

No, Canon Rock isn't on it.

Finally beat Lou on hard...he is a beast I do not wanna see on expert. Now I'm stuck on the 7th tier on expert, but a little practice should help out that.

Also, there have been some links to possible future dowloadable content, that would make guitar battle songs playable, a foo fighters pack, and a velvet revolver pack available soon.

Unlock All Songs unlocks bonus songs that you would have to earn. You can't save anything while this code is entered. Songs you unlock are

All the bonus songs that you can buy from the store
Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce

And Encores in Co-Op mode:
Sabotage by the Beastie Boys
Reptilia by the Strokes
Suck my Kiss by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll by Blue Oyster Cult
Helicopter by somebody I can't remember
Monsters by somebody else I can't remember

There are still 3 unknown cheats out there, so I'll update you guys when they're available. One of them should be a Rock Meter cheat that keeps the Rock Meter in green throughout the song, meaning you cannot fail.

ok can someone please help me with this. how am i supposed to enter these cheats? when I try it doesn't do anything? do I need to remember them so I can do them quickly or what do you have to do?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. On the main GH3 menu (with Career, Co-Op, etc. on it), you'll see Options at the bottom. Once you enter the options menu, Cheats is at the bottom of that. You will then see seven slots that say "locked" and an eighth at the bottom that says Enter Cheat. Select that, and a guitar will pop up.

To enter the cheat, play the notes. It doesn't matter how quickly you do it. For example, to enable Hyperspeed, strum each note while you're holding down Orange Blue Orange Yellow Orange Blue Orange Yellow (or OBOYOBOY) and hit enter. Some of the other cheats will require you to hit chords, and I put all the chords in parentheses in the post you quoted.

Gyle41386
11-09-2007, 03:14 AM
And while I'm on the subject of cheats, the final three (technically four, but two are console-exclusive) have been unlocked.

I already posted Hyperspeed, Air Guitar, Precision Mode, Performance Mode, and Unlock All Songs(FYI: Unlock All Songs does not fill one of the seven slots in the cheats menu). Here are the remaining three:

No Fail: (GR) B (GR) (GY) B (GY) (RY) O (RY) (GY) Y (GY) (GR)
No Fail is exactly what it implies. Once you enable this cheat, you cannot fail a song. However, there's a catch: It does not work in Career Mode, Leaderboards, Xbox Live, or Achievements.

Easy Expert: (GR) (GY) (YB) (RB) (BO) (YO) (RY) (RB)
This cheat gives you a ridiculously large timing window to hit notes. This cheat does not work in the same places No Fail doesn't.

Bret Michaels (360/PS3 Exclusive): (GR) (GR) (GR) (GB) (GB) (GB) (RB) R R R (RB) R R R (RB) R R R
Tired of the caveman lead singer? Enter this cheat, and Poison front man Bret Michaels will replace him. It has been reported to cause bugs in Online Play, so disable the cheat if you're planning to play online.

Large Gems (PS2, Wii Exclusive): G R G Y G B G O G B G Y G R G (GR) (RY) (GR) (YB) (GR) (BO) (GR) (YB) (GR) (RY) (GR) (GY)
This one is really fun. It makes the notes on the fretboard HUGE.

There is still talk of an Unlock Everything cheat, which would presumably give you all the guitars and stuff, too, so once I hear about it, I will let you guys know.

If you're playing on PS2/Wii, I'd really suggest giving Large Gems a shot...it's hilarious.

No difference for me. I guess it depends on if achievements are big for your or not. The guitars are the same, the visuals are the same, and the DLC is the same (same price too).

Some people say XBL is better with GHIII, some say it's the same as the PSN.

diehardgamecock

the review i read on either GH3 or rock band stated that for whatever reason, the visuals on the PS3 were a lot worse than for the 360.....this was obviously a pre-release build, but they did state several times how shocked they were that that was the case (even given the build).

honestly, i'd be shocked as well if there is really a difference between the two versions. but hell, even if there is a huge difference, who gives a crap? GH3 and rock band aren't about the graphics.....as long as the playability is the same the graphics don't matter a bit.

oh, and this was either EGM or gamepro....can't remember which one. and don't remember which game either.....i've read a lot about both so the articles sometimes tend to merge together in the 'ole memory.

The guitars aren't the same. The wii guitar is an explorer; PS3 and 360 is a Les Paul.

The Wii guitar also has a section where the Wii remote sits in the base. I think that is so the mis-strum sound comes from the guitar instead of the TV.

But, I was wondering if the graphics we less spectacular on the wii vs the 360 and PS3 because of the obvious dif in power.

Oh and the prices aren't the same. For some reason the Wii version is $10 less.

Guitar Hero III for Mac hits stores Dec. 10
By Peter Cohen

Aspyr Media’s Macintosh version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has gone gold master, and will hit retail stores beginning December 10, 2007. It will be appearing on store shelves as a hybrid Mac/PC bundle, for $79.99.

Guitar Hero III is the latest edition of the popular music game that just recently began shipping for console systems at the end of October. This marks its debut on the Macintosh platform, and follows the PC version, also developed by Aspyr, by just a few weeks. Aspyr will be replacing the PC-only version now available in stores with a hybrid PC/Mac version instead. The game includes an “X-Plorer” USB guitar game controller, too.

In Guitar Hero III, you’re a struggling musician who’s trying to climb to the top by making deals with record producers, getting bigger and bigger gigs, sealing endorsement contracts and getting good reviews. You do so by playing music — covers of some of rock and roll’s most beloved songs. Using the bundled X-Plorer guitar controller, you tap out and strum the notes you see on the screen, in time with the music. Do it well enough and you’ll play great — do it poorly, and the crowds will boo and eventually you’ll tank.

As you play songs successfully, you’ll unlock new songs you can play — and Guitar Hero III has them a-plenty. You’ll get to play everything from “Anarchy in the U.K” by the Sex Pistols to “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam, “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by The Scorpions, “Bulls on Parade” by Rage Against the Machine, and many more.

Guitar Hero III features more songs by the original artists than ever before, and even sports guest appearances by celebrities like Slash from Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver, and Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine. The game has unlockable content, a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, support for bass guitar if you want to play with a friend, online multiplayer game modes and more.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4.10 or later, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or faster, 1GB RAM, 5.1GB hard disk space, ATI Radeon X1600 or Nvidia GeForce 7300 or better 3D graphics with 128MB VRAM (Intel graphics chipsets are not supported), DVD-ROM. The game doesn’t require the X-Plorer guitar controller, but it’s certainly more fun to play that way.

It would be funny if you got to shoot up on the road, and be boozed out for every show in the Aerosmith games. Banging hot groupies then vommiting on them, that would be worth buying.

Yeah, I believe those are the only 2 things you'll find a LedZep song in. They're stingy about their music.

I think Itunes just recently put their songs up on its site.

i'm scared to play Rock Band. i'd break the drums...

honestly though, i think GH was/is a great make, but Rock Band took it just a little too far. that's just my opinion. although i will say that the songs on Rock Band are good.

(but honestly, GH has taken it too far with Rock the 80s and the Aerosmith games. seriously, WTF? but i might get the Aerosmith one for Wii.)

Rockband didn't take it too far. GH3 took it too far w/ "guitar battles," IMO. Rockband is essentially an easier version of GH1/2/3, but the note charts make far more sense (at least over GH3) and the best part of all, it's a party game!

It's like drunken karioke x 100. Good times.

I own every Guitar Hero game (won't buy Aerosmith because I can't stand them), and GH3 is clearly the worst. The note charts blow...I don't remember which developer did what, but whichever one split to make Rock Band clearly handled the note charts. The songs in GH3 blow. Yeah, it's great they have so many master tracks, but what good is a master track when it's a terrible song like Anarchy in the UK or Holiday in Cambodia? Rock Band has much better songs.

The 80's version wasn't that bad. It was kind of a rip-off because there weren't as many main setlist songs and there weren't any bonus songs, but it wasn't a bad game.

Edit: And Amen on the GH3 Battle Mode crap. That's 95% luck and 5% skill.

Harmonix out of Boston were the masterminds behind the original GH1/2, and Rockband. Hence the sense-making note charts. (And better song choice, IMO) That's not to say that every song on GH3 sucks, they don't, but there are far more songs I don't play on GH3 than any other rhythm game I own.

***Activision did just about everything regarding GH3. They bought the named rights and the IP from Harmonix***

The only songs I play on GH3 are:

Black Magic Woman
Knights of Cydonia
Cliffs of Dover
One
Reptilia
Don't Hold Back
Hier Kommt Alex
Impulse
Prayer of the Refugee
Through the Fire and Flames

That's it. I'd trade it in if I knew I could get any money for it.

I'll probably buy Rock Band for PS2, but I'll have to look into controller compatibility. The Strat that comes with Rock Band is an absolute piece of crap, so if I can't use the original SG with the game, I probably won't buy it at all.

I've used the controllers that came with GH2 and GH3 on the Xbox 360 version. If its the same plug it should work.

I've heard Harmonix is good about replacing broken pedals on the drum sets, as well.

On the whole, Rock Band is so much more fun if you have a few other people to play with, and even solo it has a much larger music library, especially if you're willing to shell out a few more bucks.

well a lot of the songs aren't there because they dont want all of them on one game. you cant have one game with Free Bird, Bark at the Moon, Smoke on the Water, Iron Man, Devil Went Down to Georgia, One, Stairway to Heaven, and all those other ones on one game. then they'd have nothing to look forward to, no good songs on future games.

i actually kinda like the battle mode. it was an extra little challenge in there, and a good way to get famous guitarists involved.

and no, i smoke all head to head. then again, neither of us will never know.

but battle mode serves no purpose...it doesn't mean you are better than your opponent if you win- it is totally random.

when i say they should use more bad ass guitar songs...i am talking about having some stevie ray vaughn, jimmi hendrix, dave matthews, peter frampton, eric clapton, etc etc...

GHIII was the best one yet

Gyle41386
04-20-2008, 11:24 PM
GHIII was the best one yet

Why exactly is that? Because the timing window to hit notes is ridiculously wide, thus making the game the absolute easiest one yet? Because they added absolute crapbombs of songs, thus making the main setlist the worst one yet? Because they were too worried about making awesome alternate outfits for each character than correctly charting songs? Because they added all sorts of new special effects like strobe lights on the screen and popups to distract you from the notes on the fretboard? Because they added new and more elaborate fretboard illustrations, thus making it harder to see the notes themselves?

I'm actually curious. I reserved a copy of this game, beat it the first day I had it, and haven't played it all the way through since. Several of the songs (Story of My Life, Mississippi Queen, Bulls on Parade, When You Were Young, Anarchy in the UK, Raining Blood) don't even belong on a Guitar Hero game at all...they're more fitting for Rock Band or Chart Various Noises That Aren't Even Notes Hero.

yeah, i really dont see anyone taking this "seriously". all we've been doing is discussing a game. what's so wrong with that? now, if we slam guitars down when we mess up like some people slam headsets for WOW and controllers for Halo, yeah, you can say that. otherwise, back off.

this is a place for open discussion. if you dont want to join in on a conversation, get out of the thread. why do so many people have problems understanding that?

I'd go crazy if they had that...or one of the four Willing Wells! ...except I only play GH...so, put it on there. If they did one though, it would probably be Welcome Home, since that is one of their more well known songs.

Gyle41386
04-22-2008, 10:50 PM
Welcome Home would be awesome on Guitar Hero...I love playing it on Rock Band.

I've seen Zeppelin mentioned a few times in this thread...if I could pick a Zeppelin song for them to chart, it would be Achilles' Last Stand.

I'd love to see anything by Incubus on there because Mike Einziger is a really solid guitarist. Maybe Pistola or Sick Sad Little World from A Crow Left of the Murder, or Rogues from Light Grenades. The songs from SCIENCE might be difficult to chart, but those would be fun, too.

Paranoid Android by Radiohead would be interesting to chart with the two guitars. I'm a big Radiohead fan, and that's the first one that came to mind. Just would probably be a good one, too.

The Metal is on GH3, but anything by Tenacious D would be great. Kyle Gass is a phenomenal (classicly trained) guitarist. Obviously, they'd have to stay away from anything vulgar, but I think Dio would be a great one to put on there. The solos at the end and the chords before the chorus could be challenging.

Yep...the vocals were rough, but I thought they made a pretty good chart considering the difficult nature of that song. Mike does these sliding string bends during the verses, which is pretty much impossible to chart, but I think they did well with it.
