I just moived last weekend and i have my wireless linksys router set up just like before, however now the connection on my router keeps getting tossed and my PC picks up the neighbors unsecure tower.
Everytime i redirect it to my router, it can find it and lock on, however it constantly asks for my WEP to be plugged back in.
This never happened at my old place ...
Whats going on?
The router is a year old linksys and is about 20 feet away, if that, in the same room.
Ideas?

Hell if you can acess your neighbors WIFI just cancel your internet and just use his for free.

my girl has her tower set up, plus i need a hi speed line for my home office. i get faxes a lot and have vonage setup. BTW, vonage is the debil. Dont use them.
it just irritates me that my tower - which has 'excellent' reception - is right beside me and my laptop keeps throwing the connection in favor of the neighbors.
mine is secure.
hers connection is not

This is how it happens. This is all new ... within the last few days
I choose my router ...
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j39/mbehr22/router1.jpg
It (now) asks for my WEP ... in my old place it hooked this up all on its own
Now this is a constant issue
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j39/mbehr22/router2.jpg
It accepts my WEP key, connects to my router, and works fine ... for a few minutes tops. Then it switches to the neighbors feed w/o letting me know ...

Its been a while since I'm had to mess with wireless router problems in windows but I believe that you can somehow select your preferred wireless connection (it should be in the properties of your wireless connection, go to Start-> My network places -> right click on wireless internet connection select properties). It may be under an obscure tab so look hard. It may now have your neighbors connection in there so you'll want to delete and just leave yours.

You need to make her connection "Manual," and yours "Automatic on Startup" or somethign to that effect. Also, if you can manage it, go into your router and use WPA encryption instead of WEP. WEP is older and uses a smaller encryption key. WPA is more secure.

Can't remember for sure, I'm on a hard-wired PC at the moment. From what I can remember, on my XP laptop, there is a list of every wireless network you've ever accessed, and within that list you can set how the PC should handle them. Your's is probably set up similar to "OK, I see Julie's network and I'm connected to Matthew2, but Julie's is automatic so I should switch now that it is a good signal strength."
If you change Matthew2 to Auto, and Julie's to manual, you should connect to Matthew2 everytime you boot up without having to enter the WEP/WPA key.
As far as finding the menu, I can't remember how tog et there. PErhaps u-tailgater will log in and see this, I'd bet a cold one that he knows how to get there.

Usually, all you have to do is click the disconnect button while you are logged onto there router. Then it will give you a warning that it is going to change it to a manual type router and it will not be automatic.

Definately use WPA not WEP, the way you change it is to log into your router, click on the WIRELESS link, then choose WIRELESS SECURITY, then you should have a drop down box, us WPA Personal, then chose PSK(pre shared key). Choose a key that is like a password. then when you go to connect to your router, you enter that PSK(network key). It is more secure and doesnt seem to drop out like it does when you use WEP.

Your router is still using WEP. Gotta change your ROUTER to WPA, then your PC needs to be set to WPA as well.

try this:
go to wireless internet connection and on the left side click on "change the order of preferred networks". then you can put your internet first and delete the rest so they won't automatically connect. Regardless you shouldn't be having to enter your key every single time.

ok
linksys' website is back up, so i went through the troubleshooting section
found these two in case anyone else has this issue
router setup

firmware upgrade

steps:
i will post if this works
Phase 1
1. Using the tip of a pen or a paper clip, press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds.
2. Unplug the power for 2 minutes.
3. Then, plug back the power.
Phase 2
Jeffrey S. (29828): Second step is to upgrade the firmware of the router.
Jeffrey S. (29828): And here's the link on how to do it:
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4030&p_created=1160108009&p_sid=7K_C1mPi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=5560&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9MTg4JnBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9MTcyMSwxNzI zJnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9Mi4xNzIzJnBfc2NmX2xhbmc9MSZwX3BhZ 2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWZpcm13YXJlIHVwZ3JhZGU*&p_li=&p_topview=1
after the firmware upgrade, make sure to hard reset the router again so that it will load the firmware properly. 30 sec

it worked.
the firmware upgrade is a little tricky - you have to DL the right *bin file and then upload it on the 192.1.2XXXX website
once thats done then you press reset again and pull the plug for 2 min
i had a hard time with this - had to 'hard down' a few times before i logged back on to 192.xx.x.x and finished the upload of the firmware ...
anyway, the live support guys were helpful

Glad you got it worked out. Even for those of us that work in the field, wireless can be tricky.

im pumped. my girls tower looked like a world-record caliber ball of wires ... now she has a usb wireless g 'range booster' hooked to her 2.0 and all the modems, vonage, and linkysys gear - along with my wifi all-in-one - have been moved into the guest bedroom/office. so there are no wires out here anymore. its so much more streamlined and neater. plus im a big fan of getting all of my stuff - laptop, all-in-one, her tower - on my home network, but im just a noobie to this stuff. its good stuff to know though
thanks for the help

Well, I didn't help very much I don't think, but congrats on getting it going. My laptop and my fiance's PC are wireless, as well as my Xbox 360. Wireless is the way to go for sure. Funny how I have 3 or 4 neighbors with wireless unlocked. If I were an ass I could mess w/ their files, etc. It's really easy for people to use packet sniffers these days. If they only knew how open they were...
Oh well.
