I love both these games, and I'll probably own both, but you gotta admire Harmonix for sticking it to Activision/Neversoft for talking smack about Rockband!

Kotakuite faithful Adam didn't just email us with news that the Rock Band demo kits were hitting Best Buy stores today, he actually went back to his local BB to fetch us some picture proof. And good thing he did, because the music game demo isn't just hitting stores the same day as Guitar Hero III goes on sale, it's all over the competition like an alpha mom on a Wii.
Apparently the demo kiosk, at least in this particular Best Buy, is literally set up within the wire racks housing Guitar Hero III. And if that weren't enough of a thunder-stealer, the ads above the wire racks are for Rock Band. Now Guitar Hero III knows what its like to have Rock Band inside of it and I suspect it's not happy.
Adam ads that the demo features 15 songs, that it was set up on a 360 with a 4-way USB port. Oh and for some reason there was no bass pedal included with the demo.

What's the point of pre-ordering if they don't guarentee you getting one? I would be pissed if that was that case.

I would love to know how this is. I read some awesome reviews on it, and sounds like it should be good although it's obvious a party game and they made it sound like the only fun singleplayer stuff is the drums. Also said that it seemed easier the GH3 with the guitar and the mic.

just from the commercials i've seen today the guitar and the bass are bigger than guitar hero guitars. and the drum set looks like a smaller version of an electric drumset.

It's good so far. It might sound a bit cheesy but I enjoy the singing more than anything so far... lol

I'm pretty good at GH2/3 (Hard) but on this I can play expert and pass songs. Drums however, is a totally different story. Buddy of mine started out on Medium and did well while I'm still struggling on easy. Guess i need to learn some rhythm.

Didn't try bass yet, cause well, bass is bass... :D

Man, go to the rockband.com forums and read a bit. You'll get paranoid, quick. So many people are talking about broken strum bars and drum pads, etc.

I've only logged about 2 hours on drums and about 1 hour on my strat, and no problems so far.

Any issues for you so far diehard?

I agree on the drums... lol. I'm still trying to 4 and 5 start songs on EASY consistantly. I'm hoping its just because I need to practice, and it's not my drumpads.

the guitar that comes with rock band is pretty cool......it's really, really quiet (you don't get that loud sound when you pound on the strum bar). the whammy bar is a little difficult to use quickly though...also, the fret buttons are spaced a little differently, so it doesn't feel quite the same (but it's not hard to get used to).

I have also found that is is more susceptible to wind. It throws me off course when I am trying to rock with the smoke, fireworks, and wind effects

haha...I see how that could be a problem. These game makers should really take these things into account...pyro is a must, obviously.

Well I can officially say beware of the guitars if you own the 360 version. I have barely logged any hours on it and already my strum bar is broken. I can strum up, but I can't strum down. I have to get in touch with EA on monday. I've had it for less than a week. Overall it's a tight game though

I know I once sat down and tried to play some real drums and found out how hard it was to use your right hand, left hand and foot at the same time and change the rhythm. I bet like playing a real instrument some give up the drums quick when they find it to be too hard for them.

I got it for graduation on Sunday and last night my yellow strum button will not work. It is permanently down (on game, not physically) so I have to send in an order tonight. They are supposed to be quick, but I don't think they got all the bugs fixed before this one went out.

Guitar hero's issues are few and far between compared to Rock Band. I've heard Rock Band hasn't even bothered starting the warranty because of all the issues. I feel sorry for the kid who is getting it on christmas and it breaking after a few hours...

The creators of Guitar Hero 1 and 2 are the creators of Rock Band. Activision basically bought the franchise and put out Guitar Hero 3. Also, some people had issues with the 360 version of the GH3 guitar, but it was very isolated. Nothing like the guitar fiasco us rockbanders are dealing with :(

Supposedly the equipment made way before launch were the faulty units. According to Harmonix most of the faulty equipment was sold at or near launch. Hopefully parents didn't get it on launch day or you may be right :(

With all that said, my drums work fine, and my mic is ok so far (haven't used it alot). My guitar finally bit the dust (I got mine on launch day) with the down strum not registering more than 3/4 of the time.

One good thing about the faulty guitar, you can go to support.ea.com/rockband and they'll send you a 2nd guitar via FREE UPS 2-day air, then you send the old one back with the supplied shipping label. They do ask for a $125 hold on your credit card, but they do not charge unless they don't get the faulty guitar back within 28 days. My new guitar will be here tomorrow when my UPS guy comes and I've heard that EA is giving out a list of games for those of us w/ sh!tty equipment. It's all EA games obviously, but it still helps ease the pain. Kotaku has a list of games that you can get from EA. They'll give you your choice of one of the following:

Apparently there is already a patch the Rock Band guys did to fix the problem and Sony already has it, but the GH guys are keeping it from being released. It's pretty shady these days.

Yeah I feel bad for PS3's Rockbanders, because you only get one guitar for the game (no standalones out yet) and that is the ONLY compatible guitar out now... so your only choice is to buy a whole new bundle if you want a bass player.

...and if your only guitar goes bad? You're stuck with drums until your new one comes in.

I didn't know the gibson was compatible with rock band. My brother in law is getting it for christmas and the mother in law want me to bring my 360 so it can be played right away.

BTW, UPS came today and I got my new Strat. Haven't tried it out yet, and I haven't sent the old one back yet, either. I went to UPS (dumb idea) and the line was out the damn door. I already had the shipping label printed, so I probably should of just left near the counter, but I'll be damned if they lose it and I get charged $125 for nothing.

Reported broken guitar on Sunday at around 1pm, got new guitar Wednesday, 1:13pm. Not bad at all considering it's 6 days from Christmas.

Nope. Just went to the website and entered some basic info. Shipping address, etc. You can use a credit card and have it in two days, or you can have them send an empty box via ground, and when they get your old guitar back, they'll send you a new one, 100% free. The CC method requires a $125 hold on your card, but if you send the old guitar back within 28 days they won't charge you. I went the CC method, and I'm happy with it.

I should be getting my guitar replacement on Christmas Eve or the day after Christmas. I've spent that time trying to learn how to play the drums. Currently rolling through the medium solo career. Can't wait to get some of the downloadable content. I know I want the QOTSA, Metallica, and prob. the Police pack. I wanna get Joker and the Thief, Buddy Holly, and My Iron Lung for the separate songs. Anybody bought some others and recommends them?

Friend of mine got it yesterday. It hasn't broken yet. It is pretty fun. No one ever want to sing though, and bass gets boring to play.

someone sent me a PM a little bit ago and I am sorry I have been a little busy to answer it, but.............. When my guitar went down it was a bother getting to all the warranty stuff online through ea, but after that is was very easy and prompt. I was extremely suprised. I got my box to send the guitar via UPS around the 10th and sent my guitar off with them around the 14th, and I received a brand new guitar Christmas Eve. So it is at least good they are being prompt for us having to suffer.

I used the support page. I logged into my account and submitted a question, which basically opens another ticket in addition to the one you created when you submitted for a new guitar. I'll post the contents of my query and their response:

From checking your previous incidents, we were able to get the tracking number for the shipment to you. It is ***********.

It does appear there has been a slight delay in shipping due in part to the holidays. We are making every effort to get replacement items shipped out quickly, and yours should be on its way soon. my cousin got the game for the PS2 and i wanted it for PS2 as well, so me and my brother went on a mission to find it yesterday (wed), but the game cant be found. everyone has bought it for xmas and buying with xmas gift cards.

We did find 1 at a game stop in lexington, but it was PS3, when i asked the dude working there if they had it for PS2 he told me that there has been massive problems with the guitar breaking and all this so they have "recalled" and it will be released again in late january. my cousin got the game for the PS2 and i wanted it for PS2 as well, so me and my brother went on a mission to find it yesterday (wed), but the game cant be found. everyone has bought it for xmas and buying with xmas gift cards.

We did find 1 at a game stop in lexington, but it was PS3, when i asked the dude working there if they had it for PS2 he told me that there has been massive problems with the guitar breaking and all this so they have "recalled" and it will be released again in late january. guitar hero 2 was flat out awesome. guitar hero 3....meh. it's good, don't get me wrong, but it didn't blow me away.


rock band is fun as hell to play. i definitely like it better than GH3.....but GH2 is still solid.






by the way, having weekly downloadable content for rock band seriously ups the replayability....GH2 and GH3 cannot come close in that department.

the downloadable content is available each week for the ps3 and xbox 360....not sure about how the online portion is set up for the ps3, but on the 360 you simply log onto the LIVE marketplace each tuesday and the new songs will be available for download.

they aren't free....the songs cost roughly $2 each. there's usually 3 new songs per week.

yeah.....most of the songs are great.



i've downloaded all of them except 2 of the bowie songs (the only one i got was heroes) and the iron maiden song (number of the beast).

they've got a good warranty system in place.....if something breaks, given all the documented problems, i don't think you'd have a hard time getting it fixed.
