Huh?

If your willing to use Dell look up there "E" series, I have a E-1505 that wasnt extremely expensive, well I didnt buy it, but the cost wasnt to much for the person who gave it to me. Plus the Dell "E" series has some small laptops that are lightweight and can connect to the internet wirelessly.

if you're looking for something cheap, go to the BestBuy and CircuitCity stores and look at the open box specials. they are great computers but were either demos or displays...they work great and they are about 40% cheaper.

also, the website edealinfo.com always has Dell deals.

Check ebay for a used one if you want something cheap and all you will use it for is internet.

I bought 2 of the same laptops about a year ago. 2 gateways from best buy...they were only $400 bucks so i couldnt pass them up...plus it was a tax free weekend. they are smaller and thin with the widescreen, has the no glare screen, and has been running great ever since.

I have a Dell e1705 with a few upgrades, and it retails about $1200. Cheaper/smaller Inspirons will probably do what you want to do just as well as mine for about half the price. Check out Dell's website.

My only complaint is with their adapters: They are absolute utter pieces of crap. Read around the comments for the ones on their online store-average life is about 3 months before it dies for one reason or another. I highly suggest getting a modular adapter at Best Buy or something, it'll run you an extra $100 but save you $65 every 3 months.

it is called wi fi, most new laptops come with the capability built in, they might term it wireless, you will have to find some hotspots to use it in if you get it, or you can set up a wireless network up at home.

Almost all laptops are built in with a wireless card/adapter now. If you find one that isnt, it will at least have a slot where you can insert one. At any rate, this is device that will recieve internet communication "without hooking up" to an actual router or modem. If you have a wireless network set up at home, you can connect to that...or your computer will scan for other networks in range that you can use. If you are at a motel or coffee shop or other busy part of a city...you can often pick a signal up and its free access. From my house, I usually have 4 or 5 signals I am receiving in the Shandon area...but I have my own home network that I connect to just for reliability and speed.

So it lets you use the internet whereever? How do you have wireless network at home? Do you have to buy a seperate internet from your home internet?

Wireless and wired are no different except for the obvious...the wires. You have a wireless network at home by using a wireless router. It broadcasts the internet signal through the air instead of through a wire. Think of a cordless phone...except you have the ability to use anyone else's line that you can get a signal from as long as it isn't secured with a password.

If you have internet at home already and use wires, just buy a wireless router...connect one of the cables from the modem into the router...and it will broadcast the wireless signal. My laptop and my desktop are both recieving internet wirelessly. No hassle with cables and all that junk...

Could you give me a list of things I would need to buy with my laptop.

so do you have to buy a whole seperate internet service with your notebook?

If you don't have a wireless router at home, and if you want to have wireless internet in your house so that you can move your laptop around the house and still get online...get one. They will explain how to set it up, it isn't very hard.

You don't need a seperate internet service for your laptop. It's just like buying another desktop for your house...you'd just hook it right up with the wire and start surfing. Same concept...no wires. Unless you have a desktop that is wired to the modem, you can keep that wired...OR you can do what I did and go COMPLETELY wireless and get a wireless adapter for the desktop (if you have one). My desktop will never move...but I still made it wireless just so I didn't have to deal with the cables. If I do ever decide to move it, where ever it goes in the house it will be receiving the connection still.

Wait...you don't have dial-up internet, do you?

TheGuitarCock
10-31-2007, 02:08 PM
nope.

Then don't buy a wireless router. All you need is the laptop. If you go somewhere that has a wifi hotpot (you can look some of them up online) then your laptop will pick the signal up. Most hotels, coffee shops, and even lots of restaurants now have it for free to customers. If you are in a bigger neighborhood, you can also get a signal free sometimes. Apartment complexes are another good spot.

Dont you have to have some kinda card or something?

Oh okay! Cool.

So how do I get internet on my laptop once I get it.

Because I can use my same internet service I got at home.

If you buy a laptop, the card will be built in. You won't see it. You will just see an extra connection icon at the bottom right of the screen...it will either have an X for no signal...or it will search for signal and allow you to connect.

To get internet, you do what I said above. Or if you have a cable you just plug it in. That is all...open Firefox or IE or whatever browser you use and roll with it!

I have seen some issues with this laptop. Not all but some. There is a bios conflict with the wifi and simply will not allow it to boot up. You may not get one that does this but hp still has not corrected this issue.

Mine was a Gateway MX3231, not sure if they still sell them or not...but I bought it last October. For $400 bucks even, I couldn't beat it at the time...so I bought 2 of them and gave one to my little brother.
