Transfer from DVR/Tivo to computer

I'm going to be getting a DVR through Charter (my cable provider). How do you go about tranferring video from the DVR to the computer?

I have read that it may be different for a Charter DVR than for a Tivo brand unit.

Do you just have to burn the video to DVD and the copy the DVD to the computer? (Wouldn't I need a DVD copying program for this, too?)

Any other info on how to best do this?

Can you hook up an external hard drive to the DVR somehow with a USB cable?

more than likely if you want to go straight to a hard drive you will have to use eSATA cable.. unless you have a newish computer it will not have one... you can also go to an external hard drive.. if you have a dvd burner it will probably be easiest to do that..
