we can have one of the best teams we've had in a very long time this year ... the pitching staff should be solid too ... we HAVE the team to win it all this year ... we'll just have to play the games ... but definitely have the talent and depth ... can't wait

I know it should be good, but it needs to be great if we are to make it to Omaha. See last year. All I'm saying is our lineup is always good/great. Our pitching is always good. I want a Championship, and we need great pitching to do it.

We had one of the best line-ups last year too it always comes down to pitching in baseball imo and I think we have that too but weird things always happen...that said with us its Omaha or Bust been that way for the past few years nothing has changed

We need to not have so many arm problems among the pitching staff. That has killed us the past couple years. People were either out completely or having to take rest weeks. We need to be able to maintain an effective rotation.

Our pitching rotation should be much stronger than in the past 2 years.

With the type of every day line-up that we will run out there, if we get solid pitching we should be very successful. But to get to Omaha you need a dominant Starter and closer. The last couple of year we have had good arms but no dominant arms. We will see how the pitching developes. It will be fun to have the repeat final year at the sarge.

Looking back on 2000-2004, the thing that separates us now from those teams is a shutdown closer. I know we have CuJo and Pelzer coming back, but we need a guy like the Gronk, Blake Taylor, or Chad Blackwell. As far as aces, I think Cisco is good enough to step into that role with Atwood and Coop being our other weekend starters. That being said, we have a great chance this year to go all the way and I think the leadership on this team will be better than ever. Oh, and we have Smoak and Darnell...

If Jordan Costner is back he will be the shut down closer we need. Him getting hurt is one of the big things that hurt us last year. He had an incredible season going before he got hurt.

If Dyson has healed well from his surgery, he will also be added into the mix of closers. Throws a mid-90 MPH fastball if healthy, and has a good slider as a change-up.

As it was pointed out, there are alot of guys on this pitching staff coming back from surgeries. A few newbies that came on needing surgeries (Neff and Brandon Miller), that cannot (unfortunately) be added to the mix this year. Injuries and the scalpel which served them was the culprit of last year's forced rotation "experimentation". Not Coach Calvi.

The rotation of pitching that we have is good, and I think Coach Tanner's thoughts about allowing some of the tried and true pitchers we have to take some R and R (bullpen work only/very limited pitches) during Fall will pay dividends in the Spring.

I am really looking forward to the development of Merrifield, Hopper and Ratledge in the outfield, and further development of the likes of Johnson, Atwood, Cooper and Cisco. I would give anything to see Thomas and Jay Brown bring it to the park this year. Shades of brilliance last year from Thomas when given the chance.

If they give us 1K/inning and let the defense behind them do some of their work for them, we will be fine.

Go Gamecocks!!!

When you ask if we will be a "better staff" (this year) than last year's pitching staff, would that be before - or after - Hempy's return from his '05 injury (and T.J. surgery in April '06)?

Don't let your "perception" of last year's pitching outweigh the reality of their performance. From the SECsports site, under "SEC Pitching Leaders - Overall performances (June 20,2007)":

Total ERA's: (1)Vandy (3.55), (3)Cocks (3.93), (12) Florida (5.27)
Oppo. batting avg: (1) Vandy(.238), (3)Cocks(.246), (12) Fla. (.307)
Batter's K'd: (1) Vandy (632), (2)Cocks (606), (12) Fla. (346)
Batters S.O. looking: (1)Cocks (209), (12) Kentucky (106)
Wins: (1) Vandy (54), (2)Cocks (46), (12) UGa (23)
Saves: (1) MSU (18), (7; 3 way tie)Arky, Cocks, Kentucky (12 ea)
SAC bunts allowed: (1) MSU (50), (5)Cocks (40), Kentucky (24)
Hits allowed: (1) Bama (495), (7)Cocks (553), Florida (660)
Runs allowed: (1) Vandy (266), (5)Cocks (304), (12) Florida (380)
Earned runs allowed: (1) Miss (234), (7)Cocks (261), (12) Florida (309)

Doubles allowed: (1) Arky (79), (5)Cocks (87), (12)Vandy (119)
Triples Allowed: (1) Kentucky (4), (5)Cocks (9), (12)LSU (20)
Home Runs Allowed: (1) LSU (34), (2)Cocks (38), (12) Fla. (55)
Wild Pitches: (1) Bama (25), (11, 3 way tie) Carolina, UGa, MSU (11 ea)
Balks: (1)Bama (57), (8)Cocks (40), (12)MSU (32)
Hit batters: (1)Vandy (65), (9, tie)Cocks, LSU (47), (12) Fla. (40)
Int. BB allowed: (1)LSU(17), (6; 5 way tie) MSU, UGa, Cocks, Ky, Vandy (8), (12) Arky (4)

--------------

Being leaders or in the top five of in 11 out of 18 '07 pitching categories is not bad. I will give you the "saves" and "walks" category, because we dropped a few games during the season (specifically) because of them.

Statistically, we had the fifth best team in the SEC; not too shabby when you consider how many SEC teams went on to play in post Tournament play. We were one game away from Omaha, and have been in the Super Regionals 7 years in a row (equal to a basketball team achieving the same status in the sweet 16).

Comparing this year's pitching to last, I'd say there is plenty of room for improvement. The difference being we have some guys on our staff that gained valuable experience last year through SEC and post season play. They will be better than last year's staff; over 3/4 of them ARE from last year's staff.

Add in a few of the up-coming Freshmen capable of breaking into the rotation (Will Casey), you've got a competitive staff that will contend with the best in the conference.

Go Gamecocks!!!

Fastpitch, was Neff and Miller left off of this year's recruit list because of their surgeries? We had 16 signees (on USCsports.com editorial), both are excluded from that list.

I assume both showed up the first day of school... I know Miller was excited about going to USC. What is the story?
