Back in 05 when the 360 was first released I got the extended warranty with it when I bought it, any idea how long that thing lasts? My 360 is acting up big time and I was wondering if it was still covered by that thing

you should be covered by Microsoft's extended warranty at least. IIRC, the gamestop extended warranty was a two year one, but don't quote me on that. If it's acting up you might as well bring it in and talk to gamestop about it. After all, your warranty will be up in a week or two (if it is indeed two weeks)

Microsoft extended the warrenty on ALL 360's. All 360's now have a microsoft full replacement warrenty for 3 years from date of purchase.
The number is something like 1800-4MYXBOX or something similar to that.

right but his gamestop warranty is a replacement warranty, which means he should get a brand new system (now with HDMI) and not have to wait a few weeks.

If he got it when they came out in 05 and it is a 2 year warrenty should it be expired by now?

GameStop stopped their X360 replacement policy because it cost them too much.

I would check with them if that means for all systems sold or systems that were sold since they stopped it.

In any case, you always have the Microsoft warranty.

-----

If he got the system in November of '05, the warranty is nearly over... if they stick to the November day of release and not just the month.

Well for the Microsoft warranty, it will depend on what "acting up" means. The extension to three years only applies to systems getting the three blinking red lights.

I bought my 360 on December 22, 2005 so if it is a 2 year warranty I still have over a month left on it.

My 360 is giving me disc-read error A LOT, freezing up on games, and I'll try to watch DVDs and usually within the hour of watching it the image becomes distorted. I tried watching Goodfellas the other day and the image got distorted under halfway through, I took it out and put it back in and it didn't even read the disc, the screen was just black.

No three red lights yet though.

take it back to gamestop and tell them it died. they won't check it.

assuming your warranty is still valid (within the 2 year period) they'll give you a new one in the store that day.

i've taken back a ton of 360's so far...

no, they won't check (again, assuming everything is in order with the warranty).

as far as your hard drive, i don't know.....i originally bought the one without the hard drive, so every time i had to take mine back in, i just took the hard drive off and put everything else in the box.

also, something else to think about - you may need your receipt. every time that my xbox died, i would call the store before i left home, tell them that my xbox died and that i had the warranty, and made sure that they had a core system in stock.

but i always had the receipt.....not sure if they have any of that info on their computers, so if you don't have the receipt you may be screwed.

your situation sounds pretty similar to how mine was acting right before it died, so i would guess you'll be getting those three lights soon...not sure if that's a good thing or not. hopefully you'll have better luck getting it back than i did. as far as the hard drive; yeah, you'll get to keep it. before you send it back in to microsoft they tell you to take it and any extras you've added off.

Ok, here is what you need to do.
Call 1800-4MYXBOX
Follow through with the "menus" to set up a new repair. Tell them that you are seeing the 3 red lights. They will take you through some steps to try to fix it. Just listen to the guy and when asked tell him that you are still seeing the 3 red lights. If he asks I THINK it is top right and both bottoms. Once you have tried their steps he will set up your repair and ship you a box. There are shipping instructions in the box telling you how to prepare it. All you do is take off the HD and faceplate and put it in a bag. Make sure you don't have a disc in it. You are instruced to send in all of your wires but I never have because they are a pain due to being ran through my entertainment center. Then tape up the box, apply the provided label and take it to which ever shipping service they use. I have had FedEx and UPS.

The thing about the 3 red lights is that they sometimes come and go. They will receive your console and then send you a refurbished one. They can't prove that you didn't see the lights when you called them. Before they came out with this 3 year warrenty I had a buddy who would send his in every 3 months to keep it in warrenty. Before they extended the warrenty it came with a 1 year warrenty and your refurbished units that they sent you all came with a 3 month warrenty.
