has anybody else played the call of duty 4 beta on the 360?



this thing is amazing......i've been playing for 2 days now and it's still early, but this thing could wind up blowing every other console FPS out of the water. the multiplayer beta is hard to put down......and there's only 3 levels so far.

they've taken the best multiplayer aspects of the great FPS's and rolled them into one amazing package: the "party" aspect of halo2, the "one life" seach and destroy mode from rainbow 6: vegas, the great gameplay feel of CoD2, the objective based control point structure of battlefield and CoD3's "war" mode, and of course the tried and true "team deathmatch" of almost every FPS out there....this game's multiplayer is awesome.

halo3 better watch out this fall....

forgot to mention another couple of great multiplayer feature borrowed from other FPS's:


-the "leveling" system that's found in games like battlefield and rainbow 6: vegas

I started playing it yesterday. Its like a mix between RB6V and Battlefield. My only gripes are the air strikes and the helicopter support. I think they make the gameplay cheap.

Its your typical CoD FPS but with some Battlefield rips like airstrikes, helicopter support, ect.

No cover system, so I'm happy. I didn't care for the cover system in RB6V or Gears of War, and I'm glad they stayed away from it.

no, it's not a tactical shooter.



it feels like CoD2, but with elements of R6:V and battlefield 2 thrown in. also, as i stated earlier in the thread, there are gameplay elements from pretty much every FPS that's worth a crap.





oh, and one more thing......even though it's not a tactical shooter, it is far from a run-n-gun title. well, i guess you could run-n-gun, but you won't last more than a few seconds. it only takes a few well placed shots to take someone down. you absolutely MUST plan your movements and be aware of your surroundings - you just run out in the open and you'll die a quick death.

there is also a "single life" mode in multiplayer that plays like R6's attack and defend mode.....very cool. i typically only play the "objective based modes" - a 3-flag/checkpoint mode called DOMINATION & the aforementioned mode that mimics R6's attack and defend. i don't really care for run around game modes with no clear battle lines (like team deathmatch). if i wanna play team deathmatch, i'll go play halo.

it's a reward based attack and it does not last very long. it certainly beats the hell out of the uber-cheesy helicoptor gameplay in BF2: MC.

it's like a combination of the two (depending largely upon the type of game you're playing - the overall game feels a lot like CoD2/battlefield but certain game modes have single-life aspects that make it a lot more tactical like a R6: vegas type game).

I picked it up this afternoon, and since I only had one class today figured I would lounge around and player some campaign and multiplayer.

Wow.

That's all I have to say. The singleplayer campaign is very exciting and hectic like all CoD games, but this modern era atmosphere really kicks it up a notch.

But the multiplayer..best I have played so far on the 360. Can't stop playing it.

A lot of guys are reportedly enjoying their copy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. And from the looks of it, even the industry analysts are taking notice.

As Todd Greenwald of Nollenberger Capital Partners noted during a recent interview, the game's overall sales and ratings give it the potential to hold its own again the likes of Microsoft's Halo 3. As Greenwald stated:

Thus far, the game has an average score of 9.5/10 on Metacritic.com, which is almost unprecedented and puts it on par with Halo 3. It certainly is the highest-rated game Activision has ever created. Keep in mind, CoD4 is launching on four times as many platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation3, PC, DS) as Halo 3. Halo 3 has so far sold about 4 million units. A year ago, Call of Duty 3 sold about 3 million units, and we anticipate this year's version could do four million or more.

Greenwald also stated that demand for CoD4 in the local retailers has grown to the point that only pre-orders are being satisfied. COD 4 PS3 ONLINE ISSUE BEING FIXED

“Downloading game settings”

If that phrase means anything to you, than you must be one of the irritated Call of Duty 4 owners on the PlayStation 3. If it doesn't, that's the message that Call of Duty 4 has been spewing out whenever we've endeavoured to experience the engrossing shooter online.

It's certainly no good, but the end of the world isn't drawing any nearer. Infinity Ward is working day and night (literally through the night) to fix the game's online mode.

"The server team has been working on this all weekend, and will be working through the night" to fix the online functionality of the game.

The issue that players are having are indeed with the servers, so you won't even have to download a pesky patch - the issue should soon just disappear.

"The only real issue is that the servers we're getting hit really hard, especially with the launch in Europe doubling that traffic, just something that requires optimising on the server side and we've been working with the PSN COD4 Server team from the moment it started having issues assisting any way we can to help them get them up to speed faster."

In a statement issued today, Infinity Ward announced they're "upgrading all server hardware as well as dedicated an individual database to each functionality to improve performance and handle the traffic hitting the servers."

When this will translate to a flaw-free online experience we aren't sure, but it should hopefully start working soon. If you're still getting the 'Downloading Game Settings' message during the upgrade, just wait it out, and it should eventually place you into a lobby.

"Remember, this is just short term, eventually once everything is upgraded you won't be receiving Downloading Game Settings at all."

Infinity Ward, the developers behind the highly acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare, admitted in an interview that they had their best coders working on the PS3 version of one of this holiday's most anticipated games.

"We had our best programmers on the PS3 [version of Call of Duty] and it shows," commented Infinity Ward studio head Vince Zampella.

This has also been part of the reason why Sony's version of the game has a bigger online capacity (24 maximum vs. the 360's maximum of eighteen) as well as better visuals on the PlayStation platform.

"We had two separate teams working on both versions from the start," Zampella says, adding, "Most developers only focus on a single platform, then quickly port the game over to another one. You don't get very good results that way".

This bit of information is reassuring, as hopefully more and more developers will start developing equally for both platforms and even feature the PlayStation 3 as the lead platform. Also interesting is that most of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare TV spots also exclusively promoted the PlayStation 3 version of the game.

for that matter, 18 players = too much. the game works best with 12 players (2 teams of 6). anything more than that and it becomes a run-n-gun halo-type game, which is a bad thing for what this game is intended.

I just beat the game the other day, and even though its kinda short, it did not disapoint. If you beat it and didn't stick around after the credits you are missing out. There is this awesome plane mission where you rescue a hostage. Pretty fun, try it out if you haven't already.

if you haven't tried DOMINATION, i would strongly suggest you try it....it's more of an objective-based deathmatch. you have 3 flags/control points that you have to hold & your team gets points based upon how long you hold them...the more flags you control, the more points you get.

and you obviously get exp. points for you kills just like TEAM DEATHMATCH.



IMO, it is a vastly superior game mode....there's more defined "battle lines" and "fronts" and it's a more strategic game than the more-inclined-to-be-run-n-gun TEAM DEATHMATCH. since you have more defined "battle lines", it's easier to set up a defense of a flag & perform flanking, etc as you have a good idea where the enemy will be coming from. it's a lot of fun...

yeah, that was the xbox controller....i wasn't a big fan of that either (though i only played my xbox when i was playing halo/halo2).

the 360 controller is not large by any means....perhaps you're thinking of the old xbox controllers as well.


oh, and i was a sony man until i played the 360, so i've played with their controllers as well (and i've played with the ps3 controller, but i don't think it feels as good for FPS's).

The first Call of Duty 4 update has just been released, and it does wonders for the game.

Upon booting up your COD4 disc, you'll be prompted to download and install COD4 v1.10, the newly released patch. We noticed that when entering an online game (we tried free-for-all and team deathmatch) it took approximately 15 and 30 seconds to find a game, compared to the standard minute it would take pre-patch.

i prefer 12 player max-games (DOMINATION game mode); therefore, the console version is perfect for me.

i don't like anything more than 6 on 6 because once you get over that limit, it becomes run-n-gun and there's a lot less strategy involved.

yeah...i had a 59-7 game on BOG along with a 40-something and 3 game on SHOWDOWN.

my best all-time game on CoD4 is 95-16 on SHIPMENT. i've hit above 90 one other time, but i had a few more deaths. never had above 100, but that's my goal.

right now, i'm trying to get my kill:death over 2.0.....i'm at 1.94 right now (had it up to 1.95 last night, but ran into a rough few games before i jumped offline). i pretty much run consistently at 2.5:1 to 3:1 now, but it takes a while to raise the overall ratio when you have a lot of kills/deaths in your total.

anyway, i used it whenever we played STRIKE, as i would get in the building overlooking A&B flags (in DOMINATION mode, obviously) and try and control them for my teammates....i stopped using it though as we usually ran a team back to the C flag and never let them out, so the building was pretty much useless. also, if i'm playing SEARCH & DESTROY i'll create a class with claymores as they will stay even after you die (until the round is over).

getting started i would recommend playing FREE FOR ALL ... you can get used to finding people and killing them ... when you're crouched down they can't hear you walking ... but you can't run like that when you need to get away ... i started on some of the team games at first ... and then started FREE FOR ALL ... i felt FFA was better to start with cause you don't have to worry about who's on your team ... you can just learn how to play and move fast and things like that

No, I have it set up from when I was still playing SOCOM and then when Rainbow Six first came out. It did take a couple of hours to get going. I also have problems with the mic when playing online. I was so used to SOCOM where you wear a head set and regular sounds are through the speakers and your communcaitons is through the headset. I don't like the all sounds were coming from the speakers in Rainbow Six. Is it any better on COD4?

yes all of the sounds come through the TV ... i don't know when you have a headset tho ... i don't have one yet so i don't know if it changes once you have it

So I just got went offline from playing. It was fun as hell but damn I suck. I did pretty good for three games or so...then I proceeded to have a 1:7 kill to death ratio in the last game. I got owned bad.

The mic thing is cool if you know the people on there probably. It appeared only one or two people had mics in the game I was playing. If we can get a team going I am sure it would be great having the mics.

i was killin it last night ... it threw me in a game that was already started ... there was about 8:10 to play tho ... i ended up winning the game with kills with about 2 mins to play ... i killed 2 guys at once ... they were trying to kill each other and i just blew them both away
