Now that ebay is hiding the identity of the bidders, is it possible for the seller to also have a "shell account" designed to drive up the price of the auction?

I have wondered this for a while. A few of the more expensive itiem i have bid on have been 'stolen' at the last min by bidders with zero/very little history & feedback...

from a seller standpoint its a good idea ... but a shady tactic

any truth to this?

does this happen?

yes it happens. and it happened LONG before ebay started hiding bidder names. it's just part of it...they can claim they're trying to stop it, but in actuality, it's a little harder than what they think.

seems to me that hiding a bidders ID is just keeping that info from other bidders, so its making the problem worse, not better

Yes, seller do that pretty frequently. That why you should net get too commited to one item. Just know when to stop, because if they get you on the line they will keep pulling you up to a higher price.
