USC GAMECOCKS vs. S.C. STATE BULLDOGS
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. | WHERE: Colonial Center
TV: None | RADIO: WISC 1310-AM, WOMG 103.1-FM
RECORDS: First game for both teams.
COACHES: Dave Odom (392-260 in 22 seasons, 114-86 in seven seasons at USC); Tim Carter (171-168 in 12 seasons, 0-0 in first season at S.C. State.)
TICKETS: 1-800-472-3267
THREE THINGS TO WATCH
1. How much playing time Sam Muldrow receives. The 6-9 freshman isn’t a starter yet, but his development will have a big impact on whether USC sticks with a small lineup or goes big. The Gamecocks can also put in 6-7 Chad Gray and shift Dominique Archie to small forward.
2. South Carolina’s 3-point shooting, which was abysmal (1-for-18) in last year’s three-point victory against S.C. State. There was no such problem in Monday’s exhibition win over Guilford: USC shot 9-for-30 on 3s, and scored their most points (99) in any game since 2002.
3. S.C. State forward Jason Johnson, who was a junior college first-team All-American last year, and led his team to a national championship. The Bronx, N.Y., native is a 6-7 low post player who could be dangerous against a South Carolina team that was out-rebounded by Guilford.
KEY PLAYER
Devan Downey, G, USC
The sophomore point guard lit up Guilford, with 25 points and seven steals in the first 23 minutes. It already seems like this is Downey’s team, so if he has at minimum a steady performance, that should be enough to avoid an upset.

This should be a blowout — but it should have been last year too. Still, if the Gamecocks play as well on defense as they did on Monday night, this time the last few minutes will be a formality.
