Tanner gets incentive to stay at USC

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner on Friday got one more very big reason to stay with the Gamecocks for another five years.

University trustees approved a “tax-deferred retirement” plan for Tanner that would bring him $240,000 should he remain with the school through the end of his current contract in June 2012.

There were no other significant changes to Tanner’s contract. Tanner earns a base salary of $160,000. Financial guarantees bring in another $185,000. Incentives, worth $145,000 should the Gamecocks baseball team reach them all, can make Tanner’s total package near $500,000.

I totally agree, so far he has proven to be a better coach than SOS so why not give him the money. This means I will probably be banned again for showing disrespect to a coach so be it.

Definitely still underpaid!!...any big time school that really wants him would pay that just to have him interview with them.

We certainly can't give him a stadium as an incentive....

This University needs to do whatever it takes to make him the highest-paid baseball coach in the country. Tanner deserves it.

He runs a successful program, and more importantly is a class-act in all he does. He represents USC very well, we're very lucky to have him.

He is the best coach in the country and certainly deserves every penny that he is getting. Out of all our coaches he is the very best, that includes Football, in my opinion.
