GAME NOTES: Familiar foes from the Palmetto State mix it up on the hardwood tonight, as the South Carolina Gamecocks welcome the Bulldogs of The Citadel to the Colonial Center in Columbia. The Gamecocks opened their season with a date against South Carolina State on Friday and captured an overwhelming 92-67 decision in the first of three straight at home to open 2007-08. As for the Bulldogs, they too had an impressive showing in their first game of the season, scoring a school-record 131 points in a 52-point blowout of Daniel Webster at McAlister Field House. While Daniel Webster, a Division III program that will be part of the New England Collegiate Conference beginning in 2008, considered the meeting just an exhibition, the Bulldogs are putting all the numbers into the record books nonetheless. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the in-state rivals have quite a lengthy history which currently has South Carolina owning a 74-23 advantage in the all-time series. USC is 46-9 in home games versus the Bulldogs and defeated The Citadel in Charleston last season by a score of 74-59.

The Bulldogs had a total of seven players score in double figures in the opener, beginning with Phillip Pandak who dropped in 24 points on 6-of-10 shooting from three-point range. Pandak added six rebounds and handed out three assists in just 15 minutes of action. Austin Dahn contributed 20 points, Cameron Wells 17 and seven boards, while Matt Clark dropped in 13 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Reserve Daniel Eykyn accounted for 12 points, while Tyrell McDowell and Jon Brick added 10 points apiece in the onslaught. not only did The Citadel shoot 57.7 percent from the field, the squad also made good on a stellar 21-of-41 (.512) beyond the arc on the night. The scoring outburst was a far cry from the team's productivity a year ago when it was one of the nation's lowest scoring teams with just 58.6 ppg. Obviously the Bulldogs will not have that sort of success again any time soon, but it must be nice for them after shooting just 31.4 percent from three-point range in 2006-07, to have this one on the stat sheet.

The Gamecocks wasted little time in putting South Carolina State out of their minds, shooting 53.5 percent from the field and 8-of-12 beyond the arc in the first half alone to take a commanding 55-28 advantage at the break. Devan Downey accounted for a game-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, but his leadership didn't end there because he also led the squad with seven of its 21 assists. Zam Fredrick contributed 14 points and reserve Dwayne Day chipped in 11 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor. South Carolina shot just 4-of-8 at the free-throw line, but made up for it by converting 10-of-18 behind the three-point line and forcing 22 turnovers. The team's top returning scorer from a year ago Dominique Archie (8.8 ppg) tallied just eight points in the opener for a team that was just 14-16 a year ago and averaged a mere 64.7 ppg.

While it must have felt good for the Bulldogs to start off the season on such a positive note, they have to understand that the meeting with Daniel Webster was far from reality, something the Gamecocks will make sure the visitors know all too well.

Interesting thing, after we play Citadel game tonight, Southern Cal (which lost to Mercer big in its first game at home) will play at Citadel on the 15th, giving a good scouting report for our game with them on the 17th.

Citadel shot the lights out from three at home against the small division opponent playing a D1a opponent for the first time ever. Their biggest player and only senior is the 6-8 center.

I look for USC's athleticism to force them to play faster than they are comfortable, and I look for USC to force a lot of TOs and turn them into points.

We shot 11-22 from 3-point range and 37-71 from the field. Outrebounded them 52-27 and they say we can't rebound! 15 steals, 24 assists, and only 8 rebounds! I know it's just the Citadel but WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

When I went to pick up my Clemson football ticket today they ran out of Southern Cal basketball tickets right before I got there (about 3:20). So all of the student tickets are gone. I was shocked, but happy. Hopefully they will show up.

Great game tonight. CC wasn't filled to capacity, but there was still a great crowd for a Monday night game. I expect the CC to be filled for saturday's game with Southern Cal. Here are some things i picked up from the win over Citadel.

Devan Downey had a quiet night scoring, be he was still all over the court. He really knows how to push down the court and pick through a defense. DD played fast on both offense and defense, and picked up a bunch of loose balls and a few boards. Another great effort from Downey.

Zam had a superb game on offense. He hit quite a few shots from behind the arch and had a few nice passes to set up his teammates. When Zam's game is on, we have an excellent offensive threat.

Archie showed up big tonight aswell. He played great defense, and overall had great prescence on the court. He picked up a few boards too.

Mike Holmes continues to impress. He was, i thought, the best player off the bench tonight. He made some great moves inside with the ball, and did a great job making shots with contact. I think he hit all of his free throws aswell, a very welcomed sight.

Dwayne Day played very well. He nailed a few 3's, as did Evka. Sam Muldrow played well inside when we could get it to him. Chad Gray also did some good things.

A few things to work on: We still seemed to have some difficulty at times getting the ball inside, and were forced to take outside shots. I noticed however towards the end of the game we made some adjustments and got the ball inside, but at the start of the game our offense consisted of fast break points and outside shots. Also we seemed to have butterfingers when it came to grab boards. Hopefully we can fix that before we get into the beef of our schedule.

Overall, a very impressive performance from the team. The played explosively and showed great effort. I think we'll give So Cal a great game if we play the way we did tonight. Go Cocks!

Downey’s dishes help USC rain 3s in rout of Bulldogs
Last season, the South Carolina men’s basketball team had scribes searching deep into history for all the wrong reasons.
Two games into this one, the Gamecocks are making history the way they would like.
South Carolina’s 103-42 win against The Citadel on Monday night, its second consecutive rout to open the season, will require some revisions in next year’s media guide.
The 61-points margin was the largest since 1948 and tied for the third-largest in program history. This one will take its place in a top five that includes 1918 wins against such memorable foes as the 402nd Signal Batallion and the 317th Field Artillery.
The Gamecocks also scored their most points since 1995 (112, also against Citadel) and reached 100 for the first time since 1996.
And they held Citadel — which three nights before scored 131 points — scoreless for the final 7:40.
If there were any concerns the Gamecocks would look ahead to Saturday’s visit from Southern California, they were unfounded.
“It’s hard to find a large amount of fault with our team tonight,” USC coach Dave Odom said.
Last season, the Gamecocks were held to 61 points or less 14 times. In two of those games, they suffered their worst home losses since 1914.
But last year, Devan Downey was unavailable.
The sophomore transfer finished Monday night’s game one rebound short of a triple double. He finished with 11 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds and six steals.
Odom pulled Downey out with five minutes left, then refused the player’s pleas to let him back in, fearing injury or further embarrassment to The Citadel.
“I tried to tell coach Odom to put me back in, but he wouldn’t do it — which he is supposed to,” Downey said, smiling.
Downey did enough damage before that. After scoring 24 in USC’s opener, and 27 in an exhibition win, he racked up the stats by deferring to his teammates.
“It’s just one of them nights where I wasn’t really going offensively, so you know I’m just showing flashes of things I can do,” Downey said. “Not only can I score but I can get my teammates involved.”
The Citadel hit a school-record 31 3s in its opener, but it was the Gamecocks who buried the 3s Monday night. They drilled 11-of-22 tries from beyond the arc, while the Bulldogs were 3-for-29.
The 3-pointers and defense (USC finished with 15 steals) propelled a 44-11 run over a 15-minute span between the halves. Then the game became a laugher when the Bulldogs went on their scoreless drought.
“In the second half, I thought our discipline just broke down,” Citadel coach Ed Conroy said. “I thought our guys just tried to do hero things.”
Six different Gamecocks finished in double figures. Freshman Mike Holmes, who played only 13 minutes, ended up leading the team with 14 points.
Counting their exhibition game against Guilford, the Gamecocks are averaging 98 points.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had since AAU,” said senior Dwayne Day, who chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. “It’s a great feeling. But we’re not too big on that. We’re not going to get too full on ourselves.”
