NJ Star Excited About USC Offer

ATH Brandon Smith (6-3 210) of New Brunswick, NJ currently has over 30 offers, but doesn't plan to narrow down his list just yet. "I had felt that everybody had offered me, so I started to narrow down my list," Smith said "But then South Carolina came with an offer and made everything wide open again." Smith also holds offers from Michigan, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Virginia, Louisville, NC State, and West Virginia, among many others. Smith, who racked up 1,053 pass yards as a quarterback and 60 tackles and 9 interceptions as a safety, has been quiet this summer, only attending the X-treme X-posure Camp in his home state. "When you have 30 offers and all you've done is send tape. there's no need to go to combines or things like that," said New Brunswick coach John Quinn. Smith will wait until the fall officials period before he takes any visits. "I'm taking an official to Michigan on September 21st," Smith said, "I'm going to Wisconsin, definitely." He said that he will wait to make sure he has gotten all his offers before he narrows his list down. He said that if he makes the All-American game this year (he is on the list of nominees), he will make a commitment at the game. QB Coach David Reaves is recruiting Smith for USC.

This is nothing but my personal opinion, but I could see one of those Big 10 schools or West Virginia going after him as a QB. For us we would be going after him as a safety. Hopefully the kid likes playing D more than playing QB.

You're not suggesting we bring him in under false pretenses that he could play where-ever he wants... are you? Just like the admissions issue, you have to be up front with the kids.

We will most likely want him to play safety.

DB Brandon Smith (6-3 210) of New Brunswick, NJ will make his official visit to USC this weekend his mother confirmed Monday night. Smith has made officials to Michigan and Colorado. He also has talked about making an official visit to Wisconsin.

Hey I can betcha this... if Miles goes to Michigan they'll be one of the hottest teams in the country next year. He has that winning, gunslinging attitude that flows down to his team and gives them confidence. How many 4th downs did they convert on this year? In the Fla game alone it was his gutsy calls that made a big diff.

Smith Enjoys His Time At USC

ATH Brandon Smith (6-3 210) of New Brunswick, NJ made his official visit to USC over the weekend. "I liked it a lot," Smith said. "They are very high on my list now. It was a good visit in my eyes. They are recruiting me as a true athlete. They want to get me wherever they can get me on the field the fastes, if it's wide receiver, safety or linebacker, they just want me to come in and play." Smith said he spoke with Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier Sunday for about an hour. "I sat down and talked with him and he talked about about he wanted me to come down and play for him," Smith said. Smith also has taken official visits to Michigan and Colorado. He is looking at Rutgers, West Virginia, Boston College and Michigan State for his other visits.

I think the longer Michigan holds off the better for us. These kids want to know their Coaches and we have a big head start on Michigans new Coach. I disagree about Miles having the edge. His Coaching decisions at times I question, plus the fact he lost 2 games with the best Team in the Country according to NFL Propects as listed by the NFL.

I predict Les Miles' job will be in jeopardy within 3 years.Had WVA not bailed him out by losing to Pitt I think there already be some serious doubts about Les and his game management.Also there might be some leakage out of LA as far as talent is concerned.Joe McKnight being the first....Time will tell,but I for one am not on the Les Miles bandwagon.

I suspect so. A new coach generates a lot of excitement and Richie Rod has been successful. My guess is we'll see him in SC trying to cherry pick top recruits. IMO, he will be more effective than Carr was in that regard as he knows SC a bit better.

Maybe not. Michigan (and Lloyd Carr) and USC (and Steve Spurrier) were this kids' top two choices. No Rich Rodriguez in that equation. Maybe this lifts us above Michigan. If the kid is smart, he'll wait to see who we get in place as defensive coordinator first and that will weigh more on his decision than a head coach, IMO.

Smith To Announce Saturday

ATH Brandon Smith (6-3 210) of New Brunswick, NJ plans to make his college announcement Saturday during the telecast of the U.S. Army All America Game in San Antonio his grandmother said Monday. Smith took official visits to USC, Rutgers, Michigan and Colorado. Sources close to USC indicate the Gamecocks feel good about their chances to land Smith. "They are recruiting me as a true athlete," Smith said of the Gamecocks following his November official visit. "They just want me to come in and play."

"I know it's between South Carolina and Michigan," Cheryl Smith said Thursday night after arriving at her hotel in San Antonio. "He hasn't talked about it a lot. It doesn't matter to me. that sounds like some bs to me. richrod doesn't have the pull spurrier does. and mich is in the process to a huge change. plus we have sent more db's to the nfl lately than most schools in the nation. that is just a poor decision on this kids part. i'm not mad at him. he has the right to go where ever he wants, but just like a couple of others (ie gary gray) i would bet that he will look back and regret that decision. oh well. such is life.

Whether you're an athlete or not, there's alot of thought that goes into picking a college. This is a major decision for a person to make in their life and for someone who doesn't even know the kid, his family or his life situation to say that is just wrong. So the Gamecocks didn't get a recruit that we all hoped for, its not the end of the world get over it and act like a grown-up.

Id pick a michigan team that on its down year they beat UF where we got raped by them. They are one of the most traditional schools in the country and who are we? We were the poster of everyone's heisman campaign. we cant have the season we just had and expect to get recruits over the likes of mich. I think this one is far from over also. If he really was headed here before being around all those Michigan recruits, he'll come back to Earth once he gets home and has time alone for a while.

As of a month ago, he was telling recruits he thought he was "probably" going to USC. A month later, things change. In another month, they may change again. So watch what you say. He may not switch, but don't shoot yourself in the foot if he starts considering it. If USC misses on him, they will still get theirs on national signing day.

Great post. It really pissed me off to see fans of ours rag on Ladi and Geathers a couple of years ago ... and look how that turned out.
