GO COCKS!!!
I have a love/hate thing going with seeing SOPHMORE/SOPHMORE/JUNIOR/SOPHMORE/FRESHMAN in our starting 5. Is there a Carolina team that isn't extremelyyoung???

6-5 USC early in a slower-paced game than I expected...15:26 left, USC ball.
Oop...Downey 3 makes it 9-5.

I'll be glad when we get Mitchell Carter back cause we need some help rebounding bad!

do any of our players understand the concept of how to rebound? I mean geesh, they are just bulling us!

no doubt...i think playing a lot of 3-guard lineups, we'll see a lot of that this year. Penn State is usually a plodding, garbage-bucket type team too so we need to concentrate on that if we want it to stop.

Man, Downey has some QUICK hands!
Devan has 13 already...9:30 to go or so, USC up 20-16. USC ball.

our guys look like they run out of gas quickly, not to mention no rebounding. Odom needs to spend a week of practice doing nothing but rebounding. Nothing else!

Rebounding Strategy....
Penn State: Put your arms up and jump for the ball
South Carolina: Stand there and hope it falls to you, sometimes put your arms up.

Is it me or have there been more than a few times in this game already where our guy is in position to get the board but jumps too soon & has a PSU guy jump over his back to get the rebound?

I just saw a rebound put back fest by Penn State, our guys looked lost down there. It was embarrassing and I am not watching this game with anyone. But I was embarrassed. I could rebound better than that and I am only 5'10

Halftime. USC up 37-30. We're better than they are, if we rebounded just half as well as we should, we'd be up by 15+....
The Gamecock Outlaw
11-22-2007, 01:52 PM
if we rebounded 1/3 of the way we should we would be up by 15, 1/2 way right and we're up by 20.

Gotta be close to that...last time i saw it, it was 21-12 or something close. Definitely something we need to work on but also something we're probably going to see a lot of playing a small lineup a majority of the time.

watching this game, a couple of things come to mind. first, either penn st is much faster than most teams, or we aren't as fast as i have heard. second, downey needs a team around him. it seems like he is our team, period. i am not impressed with fredrick. and the other guys act like they are allergic to rebounding. at one point, a penn st shot that missed, fell all the way to the floor before anyone touched it, and it was one of the few times state was not in position to rebound. that is pathetic. i hope to see some of the other players getting more involved in the second half.
and if i remember correctly, we were shooting over 50% both from the floor and from three point range in our early games, so i am wondering where that has gone? i mean the rest of the team is 5-17 from the floor right now.

agreed! zam looks a lot better in this second half. but, the rest of the team act like they are scared to attack the rim! even when they had numbers on a couple of long throws up court, instead of going strong to the hole, they just hold the ball and wait for devan.

They are such a fun team to watch.
Need to work on rebounding, but that should improve over time.
Zam Fredrick was ON FIRE in the 2nd half.
Its nice to have a big time backcourt..great guard play will get you a long way today in college basketball.

Near the end of the game Penn St. had 25 offensive rebounds to our 7!!!!!! That is terrible, but I am impressed that we were able to pull out the win regardless. We showed that we can win games despite being undersized. Rebounding is something that will probably plague us all year, but if we want to have a good season it cannot continue to be THAT terrible.

Anyone know what Mike Jones is up to now?

Good Win for the Cocks. The only problem I have is we need to learn how to block out on Defense and not let them get 2nd,3rd,4th,5th chances at scoring. If we could do that we can win a lot of Ball games this year. This team is pretty good. They are going to be fun to watch this year.

Apparently I was the only one who caught the ESPN slip-up at half-time. They were showing a slow-mo clip of Downey going to the basket and the analyst said "Cincinnati" up by 7 at the half.

The best thing I saw in that box score is that NC State doesn't have a lot of depth. They only had 7 players with significant minutes and 3 of their guys played 33+ minutes. Other than point guard we have a lot of depth. Branden Conrad tries hard when he's out there, but we lose a lot when Downey isn't on the court.

In the second half Downey was resting and Brandon had two quick turnovers and a foul. Dave yanked him in a heartbeat. He's going to have to do better and give Devan periodic rest. Our rebounding is pathetic. Is that something you learn or is it more about being in position. Yikes, it could be a long season.

Actually, we can thank Bob Huggins for his DUI and it's tape getting out & the university prez there for going on a crusade to decimate he and the hoops program. Whoever it was, THANK YOU!!! He's absolutely a keeper!! :woo:

Odom has to work Muldrow in there more if we expect to win against better opponents. Muldrow is our best rebounder and we can't afford to get dominated that badly down low against a team that can actually shoot the rock. If Penn State could shoot half-way decent they would have beaten our brains in today.

Branden will be fine, he's still working on the nerves part but other than that he's really a heck of a ball player. He's no Downey, and even he knows that but he's a more than capable backup to give Devan a breather.
