I think we go into almost every game knowing we are giving up size, with this team I think we are better off with the 3 guard set.

Hopefully our better rebounders stay out of early foul trouble and we continue to play good perimeter defense. If we can't out-rebound them we need to win the turnover margin, force the action when we do get rebounds and hit our free throws.
GO COCKS!!!

if you believe NCST will make the Sweet 16 you are delliousnal. The fact is, they arent that good and we are worse. And I am tired of hearing how young of a team we are. I heard that last year, I heard that the year before, the year before that, I heard when we won our two NIT titles that if we were a lil more experienced we would have made the NCAAs. When are we gonna grow up then? Odom has a ton of Talent on this team with Homes, Downey and Fredricks and if he can't win this year with them, we need to fire him and hire that coach from Winthrop.

The coach from Winthrop isn't there anymore. He's at Wichita State... probably didn't spell that right but you know where I mean... and we don't want that guy, trust me I know. We weren't young last year, we just didn't have much talent outside Wallace & Kelly, and a serious lack of depth. This year we have the talent and the depth but the truth is what it is, they are a very young team, much like the football team is.

NCST isnt good? Yeah, right. Sidney Lowe's team is going to go a long way in the ACC this season. JJ Hickson is the best freshman in the ACC not named Kyle Singler, and Costner is a monster in the post and had a HUGE year last year. Trust me, they are going to give everyone they play in the ACC (including Duke & UNC) FITS when they play..They'll be around a 6 seed in the NCAA, and will be in the Sweet 16 if they can stay healthy.

YUP. I DVR'd the game cuz we had family over again for a fish-fry (BLUEGILL & PERCH, WOOT!!) so I just got done watching the game and if we hit even 60% of our free throws down the stretch, we win this game by 6+ going away. No doubt in my mind....and it's been a problem for a few years but then, a lot of fundamentals like free throws have gone by the wayside for most teams the past few years. It's why we suck compared to other national teams who're just learning the game and concentrate on those things while we worry about 3PT% and other non-fundamental aspects of the game.
Go Cocks
11-23-2007, 06:43 PM
Gracious, lighten up. This is a young team that has never traveled away from home as a team and many are new college students. A few weeks ago some on here were talking crap about them being picked 6th in the East and now you're complaining that in their first road game and tournament, playing two games in a row, which they've never done, you're going to cash in the season and fire the coach? You've gone mad and need to take a deep breath. NC State is a good team. Don't give these young guys grief as soon as they get started. Basketball is a very long season. They'll get better, just relax. They put themselves in position to win. They'll learn. Give them tomorrow off and their shooting percentage should be better on Sunday.

I understand what your saying Go Cocks, but to miss layup after layup or point blank shots, and 'free' throws isn't going to cut it no matter where they play as evidence against Southern Cal. Odom's teams have consistently been horrible from the free throw line....when in the hell is he gonna make the players practice them?...and practice ALOT!

I had to work and couldn't watch, but it sounds like more of the same. On the bright side... at least we're consistent from one year to the next, regardless of talent or depth. That's saying something, right?
In all seriousness though, I'm not quite ready to throw this team under the bus. I still think they have potential to be good, if they can play loose like they did the first couple games. I'm not too sure that's allowed in meaningful games though, if you catch my meaning. I guess we'll see.

Dont be dumb. Shaq is a once in a lifetime thing. He is the exception. The game is changing.
Greg Oden can run the floor as well as be physical in the post. That is the thing that makes him special. I'll take a big "meaty" guy if he can run. But if he is going to be another Mitchell Carter, or some other slow oaf forget it.

Like I said in the post before this one, I haven't been impressed with NCST in the two games I've seen them in. Enough said, they aren't as good as the media or anyone else thought that they would be.
And I am not saying we aren't young, I am just saying I am tired of hearing that as an excuse anytime we don't play like we are capable of playing. Perhaps instead of us being inexperienced, maybe we just sucked! If you can't make a point blank layup, why are you even playing basketball?
The things that are killing us right now are things you should know how to do by now or you shouldn't even be playing the sport.

I agree, I won't argue that, I am just saying the media ain't always right like was being thrown up like they were.
I guess what irritates me more than anything is you hear about these young guys coming in that are good and then you watch them not know how to rebound or make a layup. I mean this is fundamental stuff. This not something they should have to be taught to do now. I mean look at all these other young future stars and they know what they are doing already. I mean OJ Mayo for Southern Cal looked like he was a Senior the other night. The kid is a freshman! Why can't we get some kids that just do the funadmentals right and then let everything else come from that?

I guess what irritates me more than anything is you hear about these young guys coming in that are good and then you watch them not know how to rebound or make a layup. I mean this is fundamental stuff. This not something they should have to be taught to do now. I mean look at all these other young future stars and they know what they are doing already. I mean OJ Mayo for Southern Cal looked like he was a Senior the other night. The kid is a freshman! Why can't we get some kids that just do the funadmentals right and then let everything else come from that?Yeah I agree with that too. I watched the first half because I had a playoff game tonight and had to get to the school ealy and the missed layups were making me mad. But, from what I watched, we were playing good defense which is good. But it is really annoying when your point guard sets players up and they can't convert.

Until we get a big man we are going to continue to struggle...it's been a problem for years now. And by big I mean meat on the bones with the height. No skinny kids apply.I agree with you. I have been waiting on us to get a Hibbert or Oden type player.

I've heard the same excuses year in and year out with teams coached by dave odom. Frankly I am sick and tired of it and wonder how long people will use the same excuses...either the team is young, he doesnt have the talent he needs (which is his fault by the way), USC wont put enough into the basketball program so we can never hope to match up against teams in the SEC, blah blah blah...give me a break with the excuses. What happened to all the talk after the first nit championship...with how good we were going to be. Then after the second with how good we were going to be. Then last year with how good we were going to be with the transfers...now we are just young so we will be good....then what will it be???? (I'm ready to be called a nonfan...so bring it on or ban me or delete this post cause i am not wearing garnet colored glasses)

All the great big man these days can run (hell even when Big Baby was @ LSU, he was getting up and down the floor)...But I guess you want another Tony Kitchings.
Big Baby did NOT run the floor. Occassionally he would make ONE run on ONE play, then have to hit the bench. He very frequently had to take short breaks and I've also read an interview where he just laughed about the shape he was in. Regarding the game yesterday though, what lost it was toward the end, a couple of our players looked like they were on some playground somewhere, shooting shots after twirling 360s and not setting. I can't really comment on that last play. I do believe it wasn't something (or at least the player) Odum had in mind to take that shot in that kind of traffic. I haven't read anything Odum had to say about it, but our play in the last 6 minutes or so was embarrassing. If our shooting stays around the 30% range, it's going to be a long year. These guys keep shooting the kinds of shots they were shooting, that stat definitely won't get better either.

"If you can't make a point blank layup, why are you even playing basketball"?
Then all the pro players need to quit playing basketball, as all miss point blank layups.
Being young is not an excuse, that is a fact.

Maybe another school to pull for would be good for you. This young team is going to develop into the best team we have had here in a long time, so quit bashing the coach, as you have done many times.

What kills me more than anything is all of the missed shots under the basket. We looked good beyond the 3 point line and rebounded well, especially on the offensive boards....
If We can execute down in the paint better, I think this team will be good down the road and in league play.... I still think we have a legitimate shot at 20 wins with this team.
NC State was picked (3rd) in the preseason ACC poll, so this wasn't a second tier team we lost to.

Missing one here and there is excusable. Missing 10 to 15 a game, isn't! Think before you speak.

I was here long before do was here and will be here long after he is gone. We have all heard all of this talk for years and they do nothing but continue to make excuses. Being the best team we've had in a long time will not take much now will it since we've not had a winning SEC record in 7 or so years!!!
