Chesterfield 13, Carvers Bay 6

The Chesterfield defense held defending state champions Carvers Bay to just six points to claim the Class A Division I championship Friday at Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium.

The Rams (11-3) lost 22-21 to Carvers Bay last year.

Carvers Bay (11-3) dominated the statistics in the game, running up 270 yards total offense to Chesterfield's 73.

But Chesterfield led the entire game, scoring the game's first points in the second quarter on a 20-yard pass from Akeem Johnson to Travis Gibson with 8:34 left in the half.

Moon Edwards kicked the extra point, and Chesterfield, which ran just 19 plays in the first half, led 7-0 at intermission.

In the fourth quarter, the Bears' John Holmes - a powerful running back who led both teams in rushing with 121 yards - powered over from five yards out to cap a six-play drive with 10:43 left.

Carvers Bay attempted a two-point conversion, but Chesterfield stopped Holmes short, leaving the Rams with a 7-6 advantage.

The Rams got the last touchdown on Jonathan Murvin's 10-yard run. Johnson's pass on the two-point conversion attempt was incomplete with 4:24 to play.

Carvers Bay made a late run, driving to the Chesterfield 24 with just under two minutes to play. But a fumble went to Chesterfield, who ran out the clock.

First off I would like to Congratulate Taneyhill and the Chesterfield Rams on winning the State Championship today. This was a battle in the trenches between 2 very good defenses. Let me tell you those kids under Taneyhill played with fire and intensity through out the whole game. You can tell they were well coached and prepared. I have to give props to Grant Caulder. He calls the plays on defense. He had those boys fired up and ready to play. I enjoyed every minute of the game.

I got to talk to Taneyhill after the game and Congratulated him on the win. I asked him to take a picture for CockyTalk holding the State Championship Trophy.

answer me this - why didnt chester kick the PAT?

its a D struggle and they go up 13 -6, why not kick the xtra point and go up 14-6. then CB would have to get a TD plus the 2pts just to tie ...

I saw this game. I can say that Carvers Bay was the biggest team i ever saw in high school football. Now i know why Cfield has the #1 defence in s.c. in 1A. The reason Tannyhill went for the 2 point conversion was that his team had a 30% conversion rate on pat's.

My dad was born and spent a portion of his early years in Chesterfield. Ill tell him about it in the morning. He didnt go to CHS but Im sure he'd like to know they won the state championship. By the way, where can I pick up a Chesterfield Hat or T-shirt? I want one and I would like to get one for my dad.
