South Carolina, celebrating its 100th season of Gamecock basketball, will play George Mason in the third place game at the Old Spice Classic on Sun., Nov. 25 at 4:30 pm on ESPN2. It will be South Carolina's third straight appearance on ESPN2 in as many days. It will be the two schools second-only meeting with their only meeting resulting in a 76-65 Gamecock win on Jan. 6, 1982 under coach Bill Foster. USC is 3-2 and George Mason is 4-1.
It is the two coaches first meeting as head coaches, but both Coach Odom and Coach Larrinaga are VERY familiar with each other. They were road roommates when both were assistant coaches at University of Virginia for four years under Terry Holland from 1982-83 - 1985-86. While at UVA the two were part of four straight NCAA Tournament teams including the 1984 Caviler team that played in the Final Four.
The South Carolina-George Mason game will be shown live on ESPN2. It is the fourth of 21 appearances South Carolina will make on television this year. It can also be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network with Mike Morgan (play-by-play) and Casey Manning (color analyst). In addition, it can be picked up via the internet at www.gamecocksonline.com (http://www.gamecocksonline.com).
South Carolina is led by four players averaging double figures including Devan Downey (http://gamecocksonline.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/downey_devan00.html) who is averaging over 18 points per game and six assists per game. Downey and Fredrick have scored double figures in every game this season. South Carolina last played in a Thanksgiving Weekend tournament in 2005 when it made the finals of the ESPN-televised Great Alaska Shootout with wins over Alaska-Anchorage and Monmouth before falling to Marquette in the championship game 92-89 in overtime.

Actually it's a simple offense that involves letting your pg drive and dish. Downey creates space for other players. The difference btw this year and last is that Ross and Fredrick are playing better than Tre's compliments last year.

i dont kno if you kno or not...but this mid major was in the final four 2 years ago..and you have to take in account that the midmajor schools always have older, more experienced players cause their players dont leave early for the nba draft and such

As you know, there are and I suppose always will be two schools of thought in hoops coaching---one that says you, as a coach, should literally insert yourself into the game by managing each and every situation with timeouts, etc. and another that says the kids should be allowed to throw the ball up, run and gun and make their breaks. I don't like the latter choice one bit, but it seems to be what Odom is doing. Don't sell the man short, though, for if he's already gone over what he wants done in end-of-game situations, it's up to Downey to get us in the right play. If he doesn't know, he needs to call a TO. I saw the replay and Zam took a short jumper, but it looked as if he hit a wet spot in the floor and tripped into his shot. No matter what, I'd bank on that look at the basket, for Zam's a great shooter. As the season progresses, you'll see shots like that one falling, and I'd rather see the shots fall later in the season (and NCAA tourney) than now. I don't like losing, but in hoops, at least you do get more than one chance.

Hang onto your criticism of Coach Odom. If you don't see progress by season's end, then by all means, feel free to say what you want to; however, I feel certain this is going to be a great year for us in hoops.

BTW, one Frank McGuire was also one of those run and gun, throw the ball up and run coaches. He did pretty well.

This is a young season, and there's a good chance that the teams we have lost to will all be in the tourney. If we can go 2-0 this week, things will look a lot better.
