Whitlock To Watch Clemson Saturday
By Phil Kornblut
ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester plans to be at Clemson Saturday to watch the Tigers' scrimmage according to his coach Victor Floyd. Whitlock, who has cut his list to Clemson, USC, Alabama, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky and North Carolina, has scheduled his first official visit with Alabama for September 21st. He's undecided on his other official visits. Floyd said Whitlock has not indicated a favorite to him. "He'll probably base his decision on his official visits because he didn't get out as much as he had planned this summer," Floyd said. "He grew up a Carolina fan but it's probably even between the two (USC and Clemson). Coach Spurrier likes him as a receiver. The things he does with the ball, you can't coach that. Spurrier said he reminds him a lot of those guys he had at Florida. Clemson likes him as a corner and a return guy." Floyd doesn't anticipate a decision from Whitlock until shortly after the season. "We're going to let him put it on the back burner until after the season," Floyd said. Whitlock hyperextended a knee in last week's scrimmage against Byrnes and Floyd said he will will not play him in next week's season opener against Lewisville.

Chester’s Whitlock thrives in recruiting crucible

GERRY MELENDEZ/GMELENDEZ@THESTATE.COM
Chester’s Charles Whitlock is ranked by ESPN as one of the top 150 high school players in the country.
Charles Whitlock is a symbol of composure.
Despite 15 months of phone calls, text messages and letters, the heavily recruited Chester High cornerback has avoided an inflated ego.
“He hasn’t changed. He’s still playing around and everything,” said Chester teammate Gene McCaskill, who is a Kentucky commitment. “He never changed. He’s a big joker. He’s the clown on the team.
“Most people, it would probably get on their nerves.”
Whitlock landed on ESPN’s list of top 150 high school players. He said he has received 36 offers from major NCAA Division I schools.
Last week, he pared down his list to five: USC, Clemson, Alabama, North Carolina and defending national champion Florida.
But to understand what Whitlock’s college recruitment has been like, a person really needs to know only one anecdote.
During an unofficial visit to North Carolina in the spring, Whitlock and Chester coach Victor Floyd were watching a Tar Heel practice when Floyd noticed something odd.
“He keeps touching his pocket. He’s sitting there touching his pocket. I’m wondering ‘what is he doing?’” Floyd said. “And he showed me after we walked out, each one of the coaches at the University of Florida had texted him. He received 10 texts in a row from each different coach.”
The NCAA’s ban on text messaging went into effect this summer. Still, that doesn’t mean the phone calls will stop.
This weekend marked the beginning of the next open recruiting period for college coaches. And with five schools still on the list, it could equate to others believing they still have a shot to earn Whitlock’s services.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound corner had five interceptions and broke up seven more passes as a junior. In the Cyclones’ 2007 opener against Lewisville on Aug. 24, Whitlock broke up two passes and hauled in three receptions for 40 yards despite limited playing time because of a bruised knee.
Whitlock expects to be 100 percent for this week’s game at York.
If he stays that way, the phone calls could increase. Whitlock said he will not make a decision until the Monday after Chester’s last game, be it regular season or playoffs. On the surface, some might think Whitlock is adding to his list of distractions.
Not so, he said, because time after time, Whitlock turns to his coach.
“If [Floyd] wasn’t here, I probably wouldn’t have been in this position,” Whitlock said. “He’s helped me do everything; I put everything on him.”
Said Floyd: “He’s been a little different with recruiting. I don’t think it’s overwhelmed him at all. He hasn’t got as caught up with it as some kids I’ve had in the past. He’s been able to keep it all pretty much in perspective.”
Floyd would know. He’s had a handful of players garnering similar interest in past seasons. During Floyd’s time at Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley, up and coming defensive tackle DeMario Pressley was ranked as one of the top players at the position nationally and eventually landed at North Carolina State.
Now, Floyd is going through another highly publicized recruiting period with another top-notch player.
The 50-60 text messages per day will stop for Whitlock, courtesy of the NCAA’s ruling. But he does not expect much of a decrease in phone calls from college coaches. That, too, might explain why Whitlock’s personality has not changed.
Quite simply, he doesn’t have the time.
“I felt like I had to put some stuff aside for that anyway,” Whitlock said.
“I have had [to sacrifice] friends and going out. Right when I get out of practice I have to call somebody.”

Whitlock Sets USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
On Recruiting
Published: September 4, 2007
Chester DB Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) did not make to USC or Clemson over the holiday weekend but he has lined up three of his official visits. He goes to Alabama September 14th, USC November 9th and Florida November 23rd. He will set visit dates with Clemson and North Carolina in the next week or so. "The big thing is to get on campus and see games," said Chester coach Victor Floyd. "He's going to have to base his decision on the official visits." Whitock does not have a favorite among his final five according to his coach.

Chester wide receiver offers plenty of productivity
By By KEVIN MELTON
If high school fantasy football leagues existed, Chester's Charles Whitlock would be a certain first-round pick. On some nights, the 5-foot-11, 172-pounder would rack up as many points as an entire team.
"(Charles) can kick off, kick extra points, throw, run, cover and catch," Chester coach Victor Floyd said. "He's the best multipurpose athlete in this state."
Whitlock's various skills are the reason 36 Division I programs have made scholarship offers.
While flattered to receive so many offers, he says he has narrowed his list down to five schools.
"My top five are South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida and Alabama," Whitlock said.
Whitlock took an official visit to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 15 for the Arkansas game and said he enjoyed every minute of it.
"It was awesome. I liked everything about it," he said. "(Coach Nick Saban) is a good guy and nice to talk to. My dad and I got to talk with him, and he was just mostly talking about things outside of football and how to be a better person."
Whitlock said that USC defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix and secondary coach Ron Cooper have been recruiting him. He also said that Clemson recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach Billy Napier has already offered him a scholarship.
Floyd says that with Whitlock's versatility, each school is recruiting him either as an athlete or cornerback. USC, however, is the lone school courting him for offense.
"Steve Spurrier came through last spring and just loves (Charles)," Floyd said. "He thinks he's missing a wiggle-wiggle-type guy. He says he has plenty of tall receivers, but he needs a guy that can juke and make you miss."
Whitlock says it won't matter what position he plays in college, but he said he'd like to play for a title contender.
"I want to win a BCS bowl game," he said. "(My five favorites) have a chance at a national championship."
This season, Whitlock has more than 1,100 all-purpose yards with 10 touchdowns. He's also recorded more than 20 tackles. He had five interceptions with seven pass breakups last year.
Rivals.com has given him a four-star rating and considers him the fourth-best prospect in the state.
"As a cornerback, Whitlock has lock-down ability," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Barton Simmons said. "He has great feet that get him in and out of breaks quickly and also make him effective from the press position."
Whitlock will graduate in December and plans to enroll in college to be available for spring practice. He says everyone has told him he should get immediate playing time.
Whitlock says he wants to make an impact no matter where he goes.
"I'm going to go in there and do my best and work hard," he said. "I want to play my best game every game."

We definitely need more playmakers at WR. Freddie Brown and Dion Lecorn are decent possession receivers but we need someone besides Kenny McKinley who can take it to the house. One or more members of our freshman class may emerge next year but I think we need to continue to hunt playmakers in this class.
Charles Whitlock looks like the real deal. I'm glad to see that we are recruiting him as a WR because he looks tremendous on film! He is one of the few players I have seen on film who could be a star at WR or CB. IMO, he should to one of the top 10 players on our board regardless of position. I would also include TJ Lawrence (WR from Lakeland, FL.) on that list.
How are we currently looking with Charles Whitlock and TJ Lawrence? Do they have a top 5 yet? Hope we get them both because we really need more playmakers at WR.

ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester makes his second official visit this weekend when he and his father head to North Carolina. Whitlock said he will spend Saturday and Sunday with the Tar Heels. "I know I'm going to have fun everywhere I go," Whitlock said. "I've visited there one time and I just want to go there and get another view and have fun." Whitlock visited Alabama in September. He is scheduled for official visits to USC November 9th and Florida November 23rd. He also will set a date with Clemson. Whitlock said USC is the only school recruiting him strictly as a receiver. The other schools are recruiting him primarly as a defensive back. "I can't say they (USC) are standing out," Whitlock said. "It doesn't matter which side they play me on. Everyone has told me I'll end up touching the ball. And I want to touch the ball." Whitlock said he'll take all of his visits before deciding. He said he talked with his USC recruiter Ron Cooper last week but hasn't heard from his Clemson recruiter Billy Napier in a while. Whitlock's team will open playoff action Friday night. He was chosen for the Shrine Bowl as a defensive back.

Per Kornblut, Whitlock said he doesn't care what position he plays, but he wants to "touch" the ball. I think he has a much better chance at touching the ball over at WR, where we are the only school that's recruiting him primarily for that position...
We are leading for T.J. Lawrence. We're in the top 2 (whether that's first or second, I don't know) with Charles Whitlock. We're in Tommy Streeter's top 3, but as CoverTwo stated, it'll be hard to pry him away from Miami.

ConwayGamecock
11-06-2007, 10:20 AM
I like Dion Lecorn as our number 2 WR.
I believe before it is all said and done, there will be several of our young receivers we have now that will step up and become big-time receivers for us. The depth of talent there is just too great for it not to happen. That doesn't mean that we'll consistently have 4 guys with 100-yard catching days per game, but it will mean that whoever we rotate into the game will be dependable receivers who will be able to have break away receptions for big yards and TD's. We will have several WR's who have 40-60 yards a game, and probably several of them will have 100-yard games throughout the season (just not at the same time).
How our offenses have played these first seasons have been more a product of what we cannot do rather than what we can do. IF we can stabilize at the line, then we'll start to see what we CAN do.
It would be great to have Mr. Whitlock join us for this......

Will4144
11-06-2007, 12:32 PM
I don't care about height, as long as they can make plays. I prefer shorter RB's in college. It's much harder to tackle a 5'9" RB than a 6'2" RB, or any position for that matter.
If Whitlock can get short passes, he'll make people miss.

For those that are concerned about Whitlock's height, imagine a faster and quicker Kenny McKinnley. That is the kind of potential Whitlock has. Besides, we have plenty of tall WRs to throw to right now that are very young (J. Barnes, Hills, Cook).

Whitlock Has Big Time At USC
By Phil Kornblut
ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester made his official visit to USC over the weekend with his father. Whitlock is being recruited as a receiver by the Gamecocks and found everything in Columbia to be to his liking. "I don't know what it is about USC, but I love USC," Whitlock said. He attended Saturday night's game and then toured the campus and facilities Sunday morning. He met with Steve Spurrier before leaving. "We had a nice little five to ten minute meeting," Whitlock said. "He talked to me about playing in his offense and said he felt it was best that I have the ball in my hands. You know I love playing with the ball in my hands." Whitlock also has made official visits to Alabama and North Carolina. He is scheduled to visit Florida in two weeks. He said he could have a decision in another week or two.

Whitlock Planning December Decision
By Phil Kornblut
One lucky school will get an early holiday present, a commitment from ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester. "I'm going to have a decision around the first week of December," Whitlock said Wednesday night. Whitlock needs to make an early decision because he plans to graduate from Chester in December and enroll in college in January. Whitlock has taken official visits to USC, North Carolina and Alabama. He is scheduled to visit Florida November 23rd but will take that visit only if his team loses its playoff game Friday night. He also is considering Clemson. Whitlock said he does not have a favorite.

Whitlock Ready To Announce
By Phil Kornblut
ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester plans to announce his college choice Tuesday afternoon at a news conference at his school Chester coach Victor Floyd said Friday night. Whitlock made official visits to USC, North Carolina and Alabama. He was scheduled to visit Florida next weekend. He's also been considering Clemson. Indications are Whitlock has decided on USC. He made his official visit to Columbia with his father last weekend and gave the visit very strong reviews. Also, USC has recruited him as a receiver only from the outset, and that's the position Whitlock prefers to play.

The worst Union team in 10 years almost made the championship game? I didn't realize they were in the championship game every year for the past 10 years...
Whitlock had no bearing on the game? He probably made any type of passing game think twice at cornerback. He probably had double or triple coverage the entire game. Those two things are major factors even if he didn't touch the ball.

I think Whitlock will end up at receiver, where he was recruited to play. I'm wondering if Culliver might end up back on D in the Spring since he had such a hard time adjusting to receiver this year. I honestly think it would be the best move for him, looking ahead to the NFL. Whitlock would take his place as the speed guy on offense. Whitlock is a natural with the ball in his hands, I've seen him play. There would be no adjusting for him.

Hard to say, but I bet he gets a chance at both. Spurrier has been honest with the kids who have been recruited as receivers (ala Culliver) and given them the chance they wanted. What it will come down to is where he will help us the most. By what I have read, he is very dangerous with the ball. If Spurrier Jr. can coach him up I bet he ends up at receiver.

I'm really excited about this, he was one of our top three overall prospects, with Quinn and Page being the other two. I think if we can get two of those kids we are money. Welcome aboard Charles, if you are reading, and I hope to see you at WR next year with Culliver making the switch back to DB where we could desperately use him. I feel like we kind of wasted a year for him without contributing at all on Offense except for three end-arounds early in the season, so I believe it's time to switch him back to his natural position of DB where he will be able to contribute immediately.

Whitlock Says Its USC
By Phil Kornblut
ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 175) of Chester said Monday he has decided to commit to USC when he makes his official announcement in early December. Whitlock was in Columbia for a news conference to preview the state championship games. His Cyclones will play Wilson Saturday night for the 3A title. "When I went on my official visit (to USC), this was where I felt more comfortable and I gave them a heads up on where I'm going to commit," Whitlock said. "It's a really good fit for me because my family can get to more and more of my games quicker. That's really why I chose them." Whitlock can play receiver or defensive back and said the Gamecocks could use him in both spots. "They are talking at receiver now but as I get there they might try me as a specialist, kick returns and defensive back some. They told me they would bring me in on third downs." Whitlock talked with USC head coach Steve Spurrier while on his official visit for the Florida weekend and came away impressed. "Coach, he's a nice guy to talk to. He's excited about me telling him where I'm coming. He told me they are ready to get me in. I'm going to be a December graduate, so they are ready to get me in in the spring and get me rolling, have me start." Whitlock also made official visits to Alabama and North Carolina. He chose the Gamecocks from nearly 40 total offers.

I also provided the link to Kornbluts' article, since the other postings of this were deleted for NOT adding the link (wake up guys: it's the forum rules).
If you will read the article, you'll note that Whitlock has NOT YET officially committed to USC. Kornblut is just reporting that he WILL officially commit in "early December". Rivals does not include prospects to a teams commit list until AFTER they officially commit. This also means that Whitlock could surprise everyone, and suddenly choose another team, since he's not officially committed to us yet. But usually Kornbluts' info is pretty dead-on.

I never really saw him get torched this year. Last year, definately. This year, not often...all CBs get torched every once in a while.

I disagree about Culliver. Give him a little time. He'll be a good one.
i hope u right, but he looks awful on kick returns, does'nt make anyone miss, and it does'nt even look like his is running that fast, but im sure he will be ready for next year

I think Culliver did a great job on Kick returns this year idk what you were watching I held my breath every return knowing he could break it to the house for a touchdown.
to back up my point
"Culliver ranked eighth in the SEC in kick returns, averaging 23.8 yards per return. He logged 809 kick return yards, the second-highest mark in school history."

I completely agree. I think we end up seeing Culliver at safety because if I remember correctly that was his position in high school and also where he recorded something like 160 tackles in his senior year. As for Whitlock he has the potential to be a great corner for us and with young players like Lecorn, J Barnes, Hills, Clements, and M Barnes (if he plays wideout instead of safety) we will be looking good there for the next 3 or 4 years.

That stat is really skewed with the new rule moving kickoffs back. It allowed for a lot more returns and return yardage. I don't think Culliver did a bad job returning kicks at all though, I dont think anyone could have done any better.

u say culliver ranked 8th in the sec....well since one person for each team normally returns kicks id say 8 out of 12 doesnt sound too good.....but givin him the benifift of the dout sum teams have more than one returner so 8 out of 16.....that doesnt sound that good

8 out of 15:
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2007/Internet/conf%20stats/2007000000911PD.HTML
but the 3 above him barely averaged more than 0.5 yards a return better than him, so it isn't that bad, either.....

except that the new rule didn't apply to Culliver only: it applied to everyone evenly, so there really is no skewed stat, there.....

OK, but what are you really trying to say? That without the new change, Culliver would've had the 105th most? The 48th most? USC has had a football program for a long time. I think as a true FR, having anywhere within the top 10 most return yardage is pretty damn good. Maybe the rule change to move the kick 5 yards back helped Chris, but it didn't create the return yardage out of nothing.....

The big difference is that he didn't have to take as many touchbacks if he would have had to if the kickoff had not been moved back to the 30. So each touchback would take back roughly 20 yards so lets just guess that he would have had about 5-10 more touchbacks which seems close and that is 100-200 yards right there.

You're absolutely right, my friend! When you look at kickoff returns that go for really big yardage, the extra yardage really doesn't mean anything.
Take, for example, Sterling Sharpe. I remember one game in which he returned a kickoff 102 yards, even though the NCAA only allows it to be recorded as 100. If a return man is good enough to take it to the house, he's going to get his yards.
Good thoughts! Hope things are well in the Independent Republic!

That's not too spectacular. For our history, we've been known as a mediocre team at best. In these next few years, if we rise to greatness, we will have almost every record re-written. Well, maybe besides the Todd Ellis Interception record.

Doesn't Ellis also hold the record for career TD passes? He is still the best QB ever to play here, and the only QB we ever had who got heisman votes.

No, he's second by 11 TD's to our true best QB ever, Steve Taneyhill. Ellis had about 150 more attempts than Taneyhill.
Taneyhill had 61 TD, 37 INT
Ellis had 49 TD, 73 INT
Passing TD's doesn't say much for how good a QB is though... Blake Mitchell threw the third most TD's in Gamecock history.

Why does everyone expect a freshmen to break every record in the book his first year. Chris was running the ball back as a 18 year old kid right out of high school with terrible blocking and terrible effort in blocking. What more can you expect from the guy. We didnt see him do much on offense so how can you say he will be moved to D? He ran the sos sweep pretty well but for some reason sos held him back. We will see lots more of this guy coming spring.
But im glad we have whitlock bc that guy is very very dangerous in the open field. He and culliver would be two great homerun guys, like i said earlier its like we have our own version of jaquez green with whitlock!!!

Under Armour All-American cornerback Charles Whitlock (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=47120) (Chester, S.C.) confirmed this week that he is officially a Gamecock commit, passing on Alabama, North Carolina and more than 30 other scholarship offers. The multi-talented athlete took most of his high school snaps at quarterback to take advantage of his rare athleticism and playmaking skills, but we project he will be employed at either wide receiver or cornerback at the next level.
Rated as the 35th overall prospect in the country by Scouts Inc., Whitlock is one of the most explosive athletes in this class with the foot quickness and change-of-direction skills needed to excel at the next level. Defensively as a zone player, Whitlock covers a lot of ground extremely quick with his elite acceleration and burst to the football. In man-to-man situations, he can stop-start on dime and mirror quicker receivers without separation. Overall ball skills as a defensive player are outstanding.

If we were to get 6 or 7 of the guys we are in on we will crack the top 15 at worst. Rankings are fine but I like what OBC is able to do with talent. In the past we havent had much great talent and look what has been done. It excites me to think of what could be done with the incoming talent as well as what the staff is bringing in now!
