Well the shrine bowl is over, south carolina beats the tarheels yet again (hehe) 31-24. Richard Mounce seemed to play great, he did the punts also, not sure the story on that. I heard Reid McCollum playing a few times, he threw an interception once i believe. It seemed to be a pretty good game considering the weather, it was windy and rainy. I could pick up the game on the radio so i was listening on and off. Any other input others know would be nice to hear.

Actually, Reid threw 2 picks. Not a great showing for him. A kid from my local 1A high school, here in N.C. had 3 catches. His name is Derrick Overholt. Great kid.

You shouldn't be so fast to bash McCollum. I've seen him play several times and the kid can sling the ball.

Emotional finish to Shrine Bowl
Booker dedicates decisive TD to late coach Farnham
By Bob Castello

SPARTANBURG -- It was third-and-1 at the North Carolina 31-yard line. J.J. Booker looked over the Tar Heels’ defense but only briefly. Soon enough, all defenders were behind him.
Booker’s touchdown run proved to be the decisive score in South Carolina’s 31-24 victory in the 71st Shrine Bowl on a cold, rainy Saturday at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College.
Booker, Blue Ridge High School’s star running back, said his 31-yard scoring run with 7:41 remaining -- which gave the Sandlappers a 31-17 lead -- was for his late coach, David Farnham.
Farnham, who had been scheduled to coach the South Carolina team, died of cancer Nov. 28.
“He was watching over me right there,” said Booker, who burst through a hole on the right side and ran to the end zone untouched.
Booker was the game’s leading rusher, with 12 carries for 61 yards, but it was an even bigger day for Blythewood quarterback Richard Mounce and the South Carolina receivers.
Mounce, who has committed to Clemson University for baseball, completed 9 of 18 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. Summerville’s A.J. Green had four catches for 108 yards, but Mounce got plenty of help from all his wideouts.
“The quarterback just threw it up, and they went up and got it,” said Blue Ridge’s George Harrelson, the Sandlappers’ receivers coach. “You don’t coach that a whole lot. You just make sure you throw it high enough to do it. They made some great catches on the outside, and Richard Mounce did a great job of getting them the ball.”
Mounce completed a 42-yard pass to Green on the Sandlappers’ first play from scrimmage. South Carolina wound up with a 1-yard touchdown run by Myrtle Beach’s Bruce Taylor and a 7-0 lead.
The Sandlappers also scored the next time they had the ball, on a 31-yard field goal by Eastside’s Ryan Fowler that made it 10-0. South Carolina had a 10-7 halftime advantage.
“It got slick in the second quarter, so it was pretty tough, but both teams had to fight through it, so there was no excuse,” said Mounce, the state’s Mr. Football and the offensive MVP for the Sandlappers.
“We pretty much wanted to throw the ball today,” said Orangeburg-Wilkinson‘s Reggie Kennedy, the Sandlappers‘ acting head coach. “It broke off in the third quarter a little, and it kind of worked to our advantage.”
South Carolina scored twice in the third quarter for a 24-14 lead. Mounce hit Cheraw’s Jaron Brown for a 42-yard touchdown, and Summerville teammates Reid McCollum and Green hooked up for a 17-yard score.
North Carolina closed to within three points early in the fourth quarter, but Booker’s run gave South Carolina a cushion.
“It was a great game and a great week,” Harrelson said, “and to win the game and have J.J. score a touchdown, that made it even better.”

Eastside's Fowler a hit with Sandlappers
By Bob Castello

SPARTANBURG -- Eastside kicker Ryan Fowler contributed seven points in South Carolina's 31-24 Shrine Bowl victory Saturday at Gibbs Stadium.
Fowler also made the first tackle of the game, bringing down Tobias Palmer after his 38-yard return on the opening kickoff.
"I saw him break through the middle, and there were a couple guys around him," Fowler said. "Then he just broke outside, and I was like, I'm gonna go make the tackle, I guess."
Fowler, who has committed to Vanderbilt University, made all four of his point-after kicks and also nailed his only field-goal attempt, from 31 yards.
"At the beginning, when I kicked he field goal, it wasn't that bad," he said, "but that wind and rain started kicking up pretty bad."
• Rebels help the defense -- Everett Dawkins and Cartier Rice, two members of Byrnes' "Strike Force" defense, came up with big plays for the Sandlappers.
Rice, a cornerback committed to the University of Kentucky, had two tackles and made a diving interception in the second quarter. Dawkins, a defensive end bound for Florida State, had three tackles, including a sack.
"They beat us the last two years," Dawkins said. "We just went out there and attacked those guys. Everybody was on fire."
• Lucas helps himself -- Orangeburg-Wilkinson linebacker Sterling Lucas was the defensive MVP for the Sandlappers.
Lucas had five tackles, two fumble recoveries and an interception on which he tipped the ball to himself when the Tar Heels had a third-and-goal at the 3-yard line late in the first half.
"I feel like it's really boosted my stock," said Lucas, who has offers from Michigan State and North Carolina State. "A lot of schools have contacted me this week."
• Tar Heels get MVP efforts -- North Carolina's offensive MVP was running back Bobby Morrison Jr. of West Iredell High School in Statesville.
Morrison, who carried eight times for 51 yards and a touchdown, has offers from Appalachian State, East Carolina, Michigan State and North Carolina.
The Tar Heels' defensive MVP was Justin Venable, a defensive back from Greensboro's Southeast Guilford. Venable, an East Carolina recruit, had five tackles.
• Sandlappers end streak -- South Carolina had lost the last two Shrine Bowls and four of the previous five. The Sandlappers have a 39-28-4 lead in the series. Saturday's game was played before an announced crowd of 10,000.

One of our OL commits, TJ Johnson from Aynor, broke his foot in this game also. Word has it he was really impressing a lot of coaches at practice and in the game this week.

I have too, but he's either on or off. There's no in between. Great arm strength but mediocre accuracy.
