Yeah. I found out earlier from "Crimson Chatter". I didn't think it would be good news so I didn't mention it.
(5pm their time of course)
I know this tantalizing wait for tonight's announcement over another mediocre bowl for Alabama has you overwhelmed with suspense (oops, hit the sarcasm button there for a minute....sorry) but if you're genuinely worried about a forthcoming bowl bid, don't.
No, nothing is official until later tonight when the bowls make their announcements. But Alabama's spot in the bowl picture is all but official.
South Carolina, also 6-6 and also bowl eligible, has scheduled a 5 p.m. teleconference for today with coach Steve Spurrier. Now, obviously the Gamecocks wouldn't be holding a teleconference roughly three hours before the accepting a bowl bid if they were going to be accepted a bowl bid.
Which, obviously, they aren't.
So, exhale and celebrate, the Tide have edged the Gamecocks for the Independence Bowl.
I understand why the coaches want the bowl and that's for another two weeks of practice for a team that obviously needs it. But why the players would be excited or the fans, quite frankly, is beyond me.
And that's not dogging the Indy Bowl. But for a team that was No. 17 in the country and has since lost four straight, what's the excitement in another two weeks of practice and another trip back to the same bowl site you went to last year?
This team, or at least some of its players, didn't even appear to be excited about playing Auburn. Ya really think the Indy Bowl (or Liberty or Music City, etc.) is gonna get their bloom pumping?

Hell.. someone on an Alabama site is saying they might turn the Indy Bowl down if they are offered a bid.. I dont see this happening though.. Hell... I guess we will all know by 6:00pm

And also.. most Bama fans could care less about if they get selected or not.. Maybe the Indy Bowl knows this..

Anyone know if it will be online? I'm not seeing it on the news sites yet.

A fitting end to such a promising season. We had the SEC East right were we wanted them, and laid and egg at home against Vandy. Oh the humanity!

Anyone know exactly what Spurrier said? I'm not all that depressed... I really thought we weren't going to go to one anyways, although if we would have snuck in it would have made my day.

Doc, What he said was that our team had no excuses and we'd just get going with recruiting, blah, blah. I have a problem with what he said because, at least from the announcer's quote, he seemed to try to distance himself from the team. As badly as he hates it, Coaches+Players=Team.
Spurrier is responsible for his team's performance. Plain and simple. That's why they pay him the bucks. We paid good money to witness this mess! What if we did the same thing on our jobs?
Additionally, the SEC had 10 bowl-eligible teams, and they seemed to find bowl "homes" for 9 of them. We were the ONLY team left out, which SUCKS! It's no wonder that Ga. Tech LEFT this conference years ago!
Given the BCS system, we could do just as well as an independent. We used to play schedules that were as tough as anyone's and we did well. Then, we were sold this line of hooey that the SEC would help us attain new and better things that we haven't seen around here. Let's see---we've had to deal with higher prices, unsportsmanlike "visitors" and now a Coach who has attempted to tell us HOW to support OUR team!
Those of you who are my age, think back.......did Joe Morrison EVER do things like this? Wonder why it was that HIS teams ALWAYS played their hearts out for him?
Just look back at the '80s and you'll see the answers. Go Cocks!
There are few Independents left in college ball (Notre Dame, the most famous), because normally you will not recruit as well as with a good conference, Most kids and most fans want a conference crown to win. You think we have trouble recruiting now, drop out of the best conference in the nation and see what you get. Oh, we'll still get some good kids, but not as many.
It isn't the SEC treats us poorly, we just have not fared well, by our own accord.
We'd also lose money, in the long run, and we would never have true rivals outside of Clempson.
Huge mistake and it ain't happening. Drop out of the SEC and a doubt any conferene int heir right mind, worth a damn, would give us a second look toward joining once we got tired of our Independent status, again.
We were an Independent once, to escape the ACC, and with the exception of a few football games, it sucked eggs. Big time. Remember the Metro? Boring!!!

Just look back at the '80s and you'll see the answers. Go Cocks! Why is it that everybody who harkens back to those halcyon days under Morrison omit what happened in '85 and '86 when we came nowhere close to the successes of '84. Or how Morrison left a program that was facing sanctions had it not been for some quick actions on the part of the new AD.
I also recall that as an independent we basicaly played an ACC schedule most years with a few marque teams along the way.
Am I disappointed over this year? Yes. Do I want to see the program revert to the 80's? No. Like it or not, Morrison left a mess behind to the point we could only get Sparky and Brad for coaches. Yeah, who wouldn't want to go back to that.
By the way, I agree with him. There are no excuses for what happened the last half of the season.

I'm hoping this will burn at SOS. Not going to a bowl game. He always goes. We are used to not going over the years. Maybe this will turn up the internal heat from coach.
Bball is young and promising, but they need to win the next 5 or 6 to have a chance.
Baseball, well I'm glad we're a top 10 team every season, but it's time to either make a serious run at the NC or slid down. Recruiting is not as high as it was the last few seasons. We better win it this season because we are losing a lot after the season to the draft!

the gamecocks have never gone to a bowl three years in a row... this would be the first time... we needed that i think... and we needed the practice... and we needed spurrier to do, yet again, another thing no one else has ever done here!!! we also needed it for recruiting and a win is always better than a loss for the last game of the season

They didn't earn it anymore than USC, but that's where tradition and name recognition comes in. Alabama who has been to more bowls than any other program, is going to get the nod over South Carolina, a program who has never been to more than two consecutive bowls.

What you said is probably true. Again, my question still stands when it comes to this season. The other 6-6 teams that were granted invitations, did they not deserve it as well?

for your information, bama is not better than us. they just didn't have the key injuries that we had. and we beat them just a few years ago, in there house, and it made two in a row. the reason that they got the invite instead of us, is because they are closer and they travel as good, if not better than us. plus we had idiot fans, being quoted in their local papers, the usc fans thought that it sucked to go to that bowl, the year we did go.
