Here is what we gave up in rushing per game!! And if anyone thinks that something doesn't need to be changed you might wanna rethink after looking at these numbers!! I couldn't believe it! I know we all know we are terrible against the run.(and its not all because of injuries) So take a look at these numbers!!

For some reason every USC fan I've talked to has acted like La-La is a piss poor team. Hell, I even talked to a couple of people who didn't realize they are a Div-I team. FWIW they finished the season ranked 6th in the nation in rushing offense and were in the top ten all year. I'm not at all excusing how poorly we played against the rush, but their rushing total gainst us wasn't nearly as much of a slap in the face as what Ar-Kansas did to us.

I just think about what the commentators have said about every team every week since I believe I was born, that If team x holds team y to under a hundred yards rushing they can win this game!! Wow, we aren't even close!! If we are to win the SEC next year something big is gonna have to happen this off season!!
I just had a thought!! Are our passing defense numbers deceptive. We are ranked number five in the country, BUT is that cause we played a lot of prevent and zone rather than man to man. Dunno just thinking out loud. If its driving me nuts I hate to see the OBC!!

They are a bit deceptive. Teams that can run on you and have success are unlikely to throw the ball nearly as much. Running chews the clock, controls the ball and keeps the opposing offense off the field. Interceptions are more common than fumbles. I'm not saying you guys weren't solid vs. the pass, but if you don't have to pass, lots of teams won't.

Our pass defense was ranked so high b/c teams figured out they could move the ball running on us instead.

That's because some of the passing yardage came on the shovel passes and short flips that are basically running plays.

Umm...maybe every fan you talked to knew that they were 3-9 on the season with wins against North Texas, MTSU, and Florida International. North Texas finished 2-10, FIU finished 1-11...the only two teams under them in the conference. They suck and it is embarassing to only beat them by 2 touchdowns when McNeese State beats them 38-17 or Arkansas STATE puts up 52 against them.
Let's not sugarcoat some things.

Exactly. We should've predicted the second half breakdown with the way we couldn't stop random guys from running all over us. We faced two "running" teams this year... the result 252 and 542 yards rushing against us. Even Vanderbilt gained 146 on us. Sad.

I'm not sugar-coating anything. I'm talking stats. The original context of this thread and the stat I was discussing was rushing yards, not win/loss record or points scored. In case I missed something USC beat them just like many other teams did. WITHIN context of the original conversation, however, they are a very good rushing team which was characterized throughout the season by their top ten ranking in that statistical category. I was never suprized that they ran well against us. Through the mid point of the season we had actually held them under their per-game average. Over the second half of the season their average dipped somewhat, but was still almost identical to what they ran against us.
To your point that game exemplified the problems we had on the field all year long. Inconsistent play from our O-line & QB and a lack of killer instinct from USC in general.

that is a suprising stat, especially when you adverage out the season... 209.333 ypg rushing... yikes... we need to get a hell of a lot better and SOON! Even worse, that boils down to, per every run, 5.23 ypc... thats highly disturbing.

Exactly. We should've predicted the second half breakdown with the way we couldn't stop random guys from running all over us.
the 2nd half breakdown occurred long before the run defense disappeared vs arkansas. we had already lost two in a row which definitely couldnt bit attributed to the run defense or pass defense.
the pass defense was good, why do some of you feel the need to attack every single aspect of the defense. we had good players in the secondary. you only started to see problems when carlos, stoney, and captain went down with injuries. it didnt have a damn thing to do with teams running on us otherwise they woulda all thrown for 300 yards like you guys are trying to make it seem.
here are how the qb's we faced qb ratings against us stacked up against the rest of their schedule.
ull qb 4th worst
ga qb 2nd worst
sc st qb worst
lsu qb worst
msu qb 2nd worst
kent qb 3rd worst
nc qb 5th worst
vandy qb 2nd best
tenn qb worst
ark qb 2nd best
fla qb 4th worst
clem qb 4th worst
we were 5th in the nation in pass yards given up per game, 14th in pass efficiency. another thing that will keep teams from passing on you is making dumb mistakes early and falling behind big like we did the last 5 games. and it makes the defense more apt to giving up plays

You know the sad thing we can post these stats year after year but the fact remains our defense was not the problem this year as much as an offense that needed shock therapy. We go up 14-13 to Fl and the offense goes flat and this is of course after we put Fl in great position to score early and often we only give up 23 points to clemson who had two block punts and two costly interceptions one to start the game in a game about momemtum and we point to the defense i'll take our defense if you show me an offense i mean we can go back to the UT game our offense had two chances to score td's to win the game after our sorry pitful pathetic defense put them in the position to win the game and they couldn't get it done. the blame is being put in the wrong place. was our defense the best no but hey they had our offense in a position to win games even after the offense squandered opportunity after opportunity

Wow, just to put it in perspective, we gave up 2512 rushing yards, at 209 yards per game with a ranking of 109 in the country. Ohio State gave up 2703 TOTAL YARDS. TOTAL YARDS!! Our defense, although banged up quite a lot, was horrendous, we can't expect to win anything being ranked 56 in the nation in total defense. There are 119 teams in the FBS or whatever they call it now, so we finished in the middle of the pack. Think there's any correlation with that ranking and our 6-6 record? And haven't you ever heard that offense sells tickets and defense wins championships. They can't beat us if they can't score, its as simple as that.

All the talk about passing against us is down played...do not let anyone say that our pass defense was great.... whenever any team needed to go to the air to move the rock, they did so with ease... FL, CU, TN, ad nauseum:roll:

Granted we had Offensive line problems AGAIN early in the season, but we just do not have a SHUT down defense!! If we had a defense that only allowed teams to go three and out, our offense would probably resemble something Spurrier had in Florida. Because the O would have the ball soo much that it would be constant onfield learning and even our backups would be seasoned. But we have had for years now the ever so famous bend but don't break. Which should be try but wont work, and it allows other teams to keep the ball for entirely toooooooooo long!! And out of the hands of an offensive genious!!

true. We still have good DBs they just weren't tested as much as they would have been if we had stopped a running back every three or four possessions or so.
