Nope...never look for stadium expansion to take place the offseason following a home clemson game...you gain three weeks for construction by avoiding that.
---
I have been a vocal propent of expansion for years, but now, after this season, I am no longer in a hurry. Too many empty seats...too tough to sell extras...average home game attendance of less than 80,000...plus, not being overlythrilled with the plans that I have seen thus far...we can wait.
---
Replace The CockPit??? Are you nuts??? The current administration is proving that they cannot build a $20 million baseball facility for less than $30 million and are having problems with that...you want to turn them loose with a $500 - $750 million football facility??? We would be broke for 40 years and it would still take us 20 years to get into the thing...not to mention the fact that nothing would be done to W-B in the mean time...

No replacing The WB. I agree that the designs I saw for the expansion left much to be desired. Get the baseball stadium finished, get started on the new Athletic Department facilities (the new horseshoe) and the academic support center. Then worry about adding on to the stadium. I think beyond just another upper deck, they need to work on the concourses, bathrooms and stadium exterior. If they're going to spend our money, they should at least spend it smart.

I have always heard that Stadium expansion is supposed to begin after the 2008 football season. Like someone said earlier 2008 is a season where we play Clemson on the road and thus gain a few more weeks. I just hope that they spruce up the outside and inside of the stadium while theyre doing that.

Believe me, I don't want to "replace" WB. But compared to other stadiums, we are very far behind and it's gonna take sooo much time and money just to remodel everything that needs to be remodeled anyway. I would hope a new stadium would resemble and keep the WB name, just be a lot fresher and roomier from the inside out.

no replacing, EVER!
i like what they've done with the inside (all the garnet paint and everything). the outside needs just a little work. also, it could use something special to make it even more unique. put up a george rogers statue, cocky statue, something. the beach and plametto tree thing some of us were talking about before would be good. the inside only needs to be cleaned up a little. and maybe newer bleacher style seats, MAYBE.
also, we need fans that wont throw things, wont smoke in the stadium, all that good stuff too.

Well, the new stadium was to be done by this 2007. It's December 4th, so they have a few more days left in 2007. Then they said 2008. Looks to me like it's going to be 2009, which sucks for Ray Tanner considering they've been telling him he'll get a new stadium since he started at USC.
The only three things I would change about the W-B: nice lawn with palmetto trees and statues outside, two women's restrooms to every men's one (it would help cut down the lines), and moving our band and their band (make our's louder, their's quieter). Other than that, love the W-B!

It's a part of the Facilities Arms Race just like the Ed Center........Clem is crediting their WEZ with a turnaround in recruiting.
With the Bowden Extention and new contract, our AD NEEDS TO, no MUST sit down face to face with the BOD/Coaches and get something hard on paper and then start within the next year. McGee had a very good plan that included the coaches offices and one that the Board could support. The new regime went off on their own and spent a bunch of money for ill-thought plans and are going about things the same way that got us into the baseball mess.
I dont think it's a matter of money any more since the Debt Ceiling has bee rasied astronomicaly and we should be projecting much higher revenues with all the new costs (which I support fully).
It's just time to STOP with the damn politics and attitudes

The East Upper was started BEFORE the end of the 1981 season WITH a home game with Klempsun ended the season.
It was ready for the home opener in 1982.
If and when they decide to start the North End Zone, they'll do it by simply CLOSING the north end zone parking and get started.
They already done that three times (West in 1970, East Upper in 1981, South Upper in 1992.) No reason to believe they won't do it again.
And, yes, for those of you who might not know, every time the stadium expands paved parking around the stadium is reduce.

That is one of the silliest things I have ever heard. You think it would easier and more cost efficient to replace williams brice?
I don't won't even go into the discuss of where you would put the new staidum, because the first flaw in your statment is glaring me in the face. You could completely remodel and expand Williams-Brice for SIGNIFICANTLY less money then what it would take to build a brand new stadium.
And as for your previous statments about us being behind other stadiums... I would like to know who you are refering too. Because I have seen more then a couple college stadiums, and they are trash dumps compared to Willy-B. (no wonder UNC buries theirs halfway in the ground and hides behind a bunch of trees.

Yeah I come now. Not to all the games, but I'm only 23. Living in Baltimore, with a $30,000 income, doesn't allow me to come now. BUT, with that said, I wouldn't have come from Union, SC, which is where I grew up, after the pitiful performance against Vandy. The team embarrassed themselves and the fans this season. They're going to have to show me something else before I even think about joinging the GCC. I can't justify spending thousands on a team that is mediocore at best year after year. It costs me nothing to sit at home and watch the games, and cheer right from my sofa. Just b/c I don't get to come to all the games, doesn't make me any less of a fan. And the folks who are contributing dues and such should be the first to say... please don't increase dues w/o increasing the wins!!! A great facility doesn't equal a great football team. sure it helps you land maybe one more guy. But, how many times this year, have you heard a recruit say...well I went to UGA b/c they had better facilities, I haven't heard that. Young people want to know they're going to be treated fairly, and they have to feel comfortable with the other players and coaches. Facilities are down on the list. We have a nice stadium, sure it needs some work, but lets justify that work by winning more than 6 games and dodging a 5 game losing streak ala the Holtz days.

If USC does buy the farmers market in the future.. what will they do with the land?? Build more parking spaces?? Knowing the powers-to-be.. probably not.. just more condos.. I'm sure they will buy it soon. You can almost put it in stone that when they buy it, they will turn around and sell it. Either to a company that will build condos or some kind of private parking area. I wouldn't mind something like a large version of Cocks Corner, University House, ect... With a lot more parking spaces.

USC is still buying the farmer's market property but it will be delayed. Construction of the new market was scheduled for 2008 but that deal fell through and they are starting over at a new site with construction likely for 2009. There is some possiblility that we will own it for the 2009 season but there can't really be any parking changes before 2010. If we start to win some games we may be able to start stadium expansion after the 2009 season but 2010 is more likely.

The university would not buy land to build condos.
There were ideas to build an olympic sports complex, but I think the goal at this point is to replace the fair grounds parking.
But they would have to buy the land... which they have not done.

I doubt the university would buy the state fairgrounds land. Hadn't that been discussed before? I thought it had but ultimately there was no action taken... for whatever reason. I just want the area around the stadium to have more visual appeal. I drive up from Florida every weekend there is a home game in the fall, and always get a kick out of seeing how the campus and the city evolve and change from year to year. I love the new dorms, new Greek housing, the PE center, etc. I love the work done to the interior of the stadium. But at some point there will need to be extensive work done to the stadium exterior as well as the surrounding area. I can't stand Clemson, but they did a really nice job renovating Memorial Stadium. I look forward to the time when our beloved WB gets the same treatment. One last thing... move the visitors' section!!

Dream Scenario. May never happen but I can dream:
NEW 90,000 seat stadium built from the ground up. Double decker luxury boxes with a mezzanine and upper deck seating.
Where?
The blocks surrounded by Assembly, Devine, Blossom and Lincoln Streets.
Yes, demolishing the Coliseum and using one of the attached parking lots. Building across Park Street.
Parking would be added behind the Greek Quad on the other side of the railroad track. Plus on game day campus would be covered in tailgaters from Five Points to Huger Street. All of Carolina's athletic would be within six blocks of each other with the new baseball stadium just down the street a little and the Colonial Centre sharing the new stadium's parking.
How much? Based on other modern stadium construction (the NFL and MLB) probably in the $600 Million range. It wouldn't cost a billion like Jerry Jones is spending in Dallas because for one thing there's no retractable lid.
Complaints? Well, all those folks who bought a condo in an industrial wasteland across the street from the W-B would be a tad upset. Oh, well. I doubt the University made them any promises. The Cockabooses, of course, can be moved onto a siding somewhere near the stadium.
Of course there are those old women and idiots who'd bitch about parking and traffic, but Fug 'em. When's the last time a Dawg, Hawg, Tide, Gator or Lose You fan complained because the stadium was too close to campus? The advantages of a stadium ON campus and in downtown Columbia would be a boon to the Carolina footbal experience.
Could it happen? Sure. All it would take is Robert McNair or some other billionaire alumni to leave it their will. Or for 600 alumni to donate $1 million each. Yeah, I know: it'll never happen. But it would be so friggin' cool if it did!
Oh, the real incentive? Telling the Fairgrounds AND the Farmers' Market to kiss Carolina's feathered ass. That right there is worth a few million.

I have to say you make a compelling argument. It might be a pipe-dream, but, what the hell, pass it over... I'll take a drag!

I'm Sorry, that is a terrible idea.
1st - That land already earmarked for research and educational buildings for the univeristy.
2nd - you must be completely detatched from the campus community, because there is already absolutely NO parking for the students. Let alone 70,000 fans. There is nowhere to put all the people.
3rd - You will have to fight the constant pressure of my foot in your ass if you ever try to tear down the Brice!

Just thought I would let you know that, while your dream of a new stadium may never happen, you may be able to tell the Farmer's Market to kiss your ass sooner than you might think. The reason that the athletic department started charging for parking this year was to raise money to eventually buy the Farmer's market. Believe me I can't wait till that happens either.

I just realized somthing.
My Dream stadium would never happen.
Bob Coble and the Columbia City Stooges would never allow Park Street to be closed between Devine and Blossom. After all, that one block no one ever uses except to get to the Elephant Room is a vital commercial artery for the city. Without it employees at some state agency might have to circle the block to get to work in the morning.
My God, it could be the end of Western Civilization as we know it!
Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

I will say this. I've been in every SEC stadium and every ACC stadium except Maryland and Boston College. I've been in six different NFL stadiums. I've been in several college stadiums and "municipal" facilities (i.e., Legion Field, Gator Bowl, etc.) I've been to a total of 44 different "big" football stadiums. (I won't count Jounson-Hagood, the old Sirrine Stadium, etc.)
Williams-Brice is the most "comfortable" stadium I've ever been in. It's easy to get it, get out, get to the seat and sit to watch the game. The WB has more leg room and seat room of any stadium. (Try spending three hours in the Jaw Ja Dome or Neyland Stadium.) Access to the stadium is second only to Pro Player and Raymond James. What I really dislike is how fans are packed into small ramps and common areas in so many college stadiums (If you haven't been sardined at Sanford, Neyland or Ben Hill Griffin getting in or getting out then you don't know what you're missing!) And of course the spectator's view of the game at Williams-Brice is second to none. There are a few bad seat at ground level in the old metal stands, but there are a very small percentage of the entire stadium.
So I don't want anyone to think I dislike our stadium. It's great and as fans we are spoiled in a lot of way compared to what other fans endure on game day.

Is this the year where they start wotk on the addition to the stadium? Or is it even in stone yet?
The answer to that is NO. USC does not have the money. Look up the Forbes Report.

So you're telling me that you have an easier time exiting our stadium than the others? No way. I might agree with you on the legroom but Arkansas has to be close...but truthfully as far as access and room to stretch out..nothing compares to the dump Tulsa plays in...40k seats for 15-25k...that my friend is a lot of legroom :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Oh and you can arrive 5 minutes before the game and make kickoff :rotfl:

Having been to several games in "The Big House" in Ann Arbor, I have to totally agree with you.
The seats there are so stinking close together that if one person stands up, the entire row stands up with him (especially in November when you are bundled up for the weather).
