View Full Version : Would this work against the spread for us next year

We have some good athletes that allow us to play some combo positions with out players. I've been saying the answer is a 5-2 defense with both ends being bandits. In response to the offensive read the defense needs to read in return. When the qb makes his read the defense should peel off in response. In this play you could play man or zone on the corners and one is shown on each side. This package wouldn't be an every down scheme because it would put you in some vulnerable positions in passing but it would be good on plays you know it's coming (third down, etc) or against teams like SC State that you know are going to run it a lot. I'm intersted to hear what you guys think. (This is assuming Cliff and one of the Lindsay boys play the ends. They have the speed to make this work in my opinion.)

I think there is a thread about this. Search, but it could have been deleted.

Slants across the middle would tear that D apart. You cant ask a linebacker to play the deep middle and expect to be successful.

with the players we have that can play LB and DE (Jasper, Matthews, Melvin, Travian, etc.) we might as well run the base 4-3 and do 3-4 and 5-2 looks, basically what we've been doing. we just have to do it at the right times.

the only way a LB can play deep middle would be if we put E Cook at that position when we use this D. He would be more like a safety, but he can play big like a LB if needed. He has the speed to play deep. Also, I think Darian Stewart could play that spot. I think that D would work, but like any other, there are holes, and we'll have to get better in the secondary to play man to man.

Who is responsible for covering the man in motion?

um, we already use the 5-2.

But you need to realize that every football team uses several different formations in a game.

We use 4-3, 3-4, 5-2, nickel, dime... etc.

So this scheme is not anything new to our players. They already run it. Just not well.

Defense's can shut the spread down. Players have to stop trying for the big hits, come to the ball under control and make one on one tackles. The spread is based on getting your athletes the ball and making a defender miss. The pros do it that way.

All this D is, is a version of a 3-4 with your T's and OLB squeezed down. The spread is to make you have to play disaplind. It doesn't matter what D you run if you can't be disaplin then you can't win.

I swear we all aren't trying to jump on you.
