I'm going to be buying a GPS unit for my car soon. One of the portable type.
I haven't done any research yet, but wanted to know if anyone has one, what the brand is, what they like and dislike. Also any suggestions on features to look for would be appreciated.
What about new maps? Do you have to buy new software every year?

I work with Enterprise, we only buy Garmin units. They are pretty solid. They take all kinds of beatings and keep on going. They always seem to work great for me.
As far as maps, it depends on what kind of unit you get. They all update in different ways. And the more expensive ones are going to have more listings of restuarants and things like that.

I have a garmin nuvi350 and love it...it has maps, voice command, and stores MP3's that you can play over your radio. There are lots of restaurants on it that makes it nice to use on trips. I know that I looked in consumer reports and it was highly ranked, but they liked one of the tom toms as a better buy because it was a lower price. I would swing by the local barnes and noble/bookstore and read consumer reports on the issue. I decided when I bought mine to pay a little more for a better unit, but I would be that there are many good ones available

Garmin Nuvi. I have the 350, you get the more modern model.
They have a certain amount of upgradeability, and a certain amount of "buy the new map" is the best I can tell you. Plus I added a map for a Europe trip which was very nice.
BTW I bought mine on Ebay and saved quite a bit.

My wife bought a Garmin for me and I love it. The updates are about $70 and are available once a year at the website.

I'll have to give a shout out for Garmin as well. I have the Nuvi 660 and probably paid too much but I love the features. MP3 player with FM Modulator and 4.5 inch screen. I have used the Tomtom as well. I like the Tomtom's voices better than Garmin's. Garmin's sound a little too computer like. They are both good units. Both are extremely user friendly. I prefer the slim ones from both.(Nuvi and One).
Don't pay retail for them. Shop EBAY and bid low until you get one at the price that you want to pay. I saved about $150 on mine. Good luck!
By the way, Magellan makes a nice higher end unit as well!

Do you have to upgrade every year or could you upgrade every couple of years for $70 or so?

I travel all over the country with my job. I rent cars from Hertz with the Garmin units. Can't live without them.

I work in home health care and do not know what I would do without it. Well worth the money. I went with Garmin and it has like 5mill points of interest. I just hit the food icon and it breaks in down into categories. You touch which place you want and it gives you directions to that place. It even redirects you if you miss a turn.

My dad got a Garmin one on eBay a short while back and we used it on our 11 hr trip to New Jersey over Thanksgiving. I also have used it and it is very helpful. I used it grying to get down toward Clemson to play some golf. It has a big screen and it gives loud directions.
I dont know about the other kinds but Garmin makes a good one. One thing about the Garmin system is it has a good battery life, but when you turn off the car you have to unplug it or set it to battery power so that the system doesnt stop showing you the directions

My old roomate has a Tom Tom, and I love using it when I can borrow it from him. My wife is getting me a Tom Tom for Christmas. I am getting the basic one, all I really need to be able to do is find addresses. You will have to pay a little bit more for the points of interest.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 360 from www.buydig.com (http://www.buydig.com) a few monhs back for 400 ... they beat anyone else by a 100 bucks.
and the gps is great. finds a conection very quickly - which is a big imprvmnt from past models i hear.
plus, its very thin and Garmin pushes this one as their pocket model - you can take it on the streets of europe, it has an mp3 player and language converter, plus it reads mem cards so you can add info to it, etc ...
PS - im in sales as well, and like others have stated, i would literally be lost if i didnt have this thing

You were saying you rent from hertz alot for business? Send me an e-mail. I am with the corporate accounts department at enterprise. You are probably being charged way too much for your rentals.

No shame in it. Just doing my gamecock duty. There are two places to go if you like getting robbed, a back alley in NY and Hertz.
There is a reason we have the largest car fleet in the world and Hertz is a third the size.
(Back to the subject) Enterprise uses Garmin. And as stated before, they are pretty solid units.

just ribbin ya, jay! I have always liked Enterprise the best, FWIW. I also ALMOST had a great job with Enterprise after graduating college back in '03, but I had a moving violation that was too recent and hadn't dropped off my driving record yet.

It's really up to you. I know that certain addresses are not there because of new subdivisions, etc. They update their maps once a year. I reckon you could download one whenever you felt the need to.
