I think we said that back in 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, etc. Our defense has never been good, except for next years. If we just wait till next year...

You are wrong about 1950. It was in 1951......
actually, USC has had some pretty decent defenses in the past, just not over long stretches of time. 1987 was one of the more recent years, when we held opponents to 141 total points in 12 games (11.75 ppg ave.).
South Carolina had very good defenses back in the 50's, with several teams during that decade holding teams to less than 2 scores. 1956 was the best, allowing opponents to score a total of 67 points during a 7-3 season (6.7 ppg, obviously)....

Definitely the 1980's, 1984 and 1987 in particular.

Yippee!
Some folks said the exact same thing last Dec after the Bowl game. We were returning 10 of 11 starters on defense.
Maybe it's better to not say anything, eh?

In 39 we were not scored on. So, that was a hell of a defense.

Now we can talk next year's defense.....it can't be worse. and now 99% of your posts wont be about two down linemen. everything should be in place with everyone projected to on board to have a very good defense, its up to the next dc to not mess it up basically. the talent will be there

Whos going to start at the linebacker spots?
crowcutta
12-11-2007, 04:30 PM
gotta know what kinda defense we're running next year first of all,
3-4 i'd guess, matthews and norwood on the outside, with jasper and sapp/paulk/lindsey at the other inside spot.
4-3 paulk and sapp on the outside, jasper on the inside
Jasper's not comin back now that Nix is gone. I hope he does return but it wouldnt make sense for him to play 1 more year under a completely different scheme and coach. Im not the first one who's said this either.

yeah i wasnt really thinking about that, we'd have to promote someone in house who he's comfortable with or he'd basically have to be that dead set in returning or like the new guy. youre right i think he even mentioned nix leaving is one of the scenarios for him going to the nfl.

What are you talking about I don't remember Nix having anything to do with wether Jasper will come back or not

Didn't Jasper say the other day that he was coming back unless two things occurred. One was if the family needed money, and he said they are fine in that respect for now. The other was if coaching changes took place. Which coaching changes he was talking about I'm not sure, but I believe since Nix left and wasn't fired he will still come back. I'm hoping Nix will talk to Jasper about coming back for us.

And KO wasn't ready and JJ and Sid, so you see my point? I'm thinking he is going to come back because NFL teams will want to see him perform after the surgery, but don't be a fool and think it is 100% that Jasper will be back. Also you better believe that coaches do have a lot to do with whether or not if a player stays or not. SOS may hire a guy tomorrow that Jasper absolutely hates, and may decide he can't play for him. Anything is possible.

He had surgery on his knee and will not be ready for the combines.
Ko Simpson, JJ, Sidney...none of these guys had season ending injuries.

Oh ok, you're not his boyfriend, you're actually his doctor and this is where you get your inside scoop, huh.... So since you've conducted the surgery on his knee and are now his personal rehab specialist you will let us know when he is ready to play again, won't you? Get it?

It will be interesting to see what salary they offer for the position. I don't understand why we couldn't offer a good salary - we don't pay an offensive coord.

Why do some people think the Lindseys are the greatest DE LB's to ever play... I just dont get it
ANYWAYS, What makes me excited about next years is HOPEFULLY our DC will see the talent we have and place them in the right position. A little tweaks here and there and we could be great, that is we could be, we could be

Casper will go, strictly because of his size and tackling ability. it probably wont be until the 7th round, but still, better than nothing. i think, in the right scheme (probably a 3-4 like Baltimore) he could be good. either a highly capable backup or a decent starter with time.

not at all but they were starters for us in the past and they at least provide quality experienced depth if nothing else. justin seems to have a nose for the ball, he looked real impressive in the spring game
