Jane McGuire, the wife of legendary USC basketball coach Frank McGuire, died Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by McSwain-Evans Funeral Home in Newberry, but no details have been released.

"Jane McGuire's passing is a real sadness to Gamecocks everywhere,” USC coach Dave Odom said in a release. “She has followed South Carolina with a real passion all her life. At the same time, her death gives fellow Gamecocks an opportunity to remember her life with coach McGuire and the memories of great teams and championships.

“As we celebrate 100 years of Gamecock basketball this year, so many of the Gamecocks will think back to the many fine memories that were made with the McGuire family during their time at South Carolina.”

Sad to hear that news. I consider the McGuires the first family of Gamecock sports.

An era of greatness has left our state. Very sad news. But, the reunion she and the Irishman are having right now must be something!!

Widow of USC coach helped him see different side of South Carolina

Funeral services for Jane Henderson McGuire, second wife of Hall of Fame basketball coach Frank McGuire, will be held Saturday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Chapel in her hometown of Newberry.

“Jane McGuire’s passing is a real sadness to Gamecocks everywhere,” USC basketball coach Dave Odom said in a statement. “She has followed South Carolina with a real passion all her life.

“At the same time, her death gives fellow Gamecocks an opportunity to remember her life with Coach McGuire and the memories of great teams and championships.”

She married McGuire after the death of his first wife, Patricia.

“Frank, of course, was from New York City, and a funny thing was when she took Frank to her hometown for the first time,” said Bob Fulton, longtime voice of South Carolina athletics. “That was the first time he had seen a farm or a cow.”

Frank McGuire came to USC in 1964 after coaching stints at St. John’s and North Carolina in college and with Philadelphia in the National Basketball Association. He coached the Gamecocks through the 1980 season and lived in Columbia until his death in 1994.

“She was very loyal to Frank and took very good care of him after he suffered his stroke,” said Don Barton, who often visited to interview the coach in collecting material for a book.

Fulton said he and fellow announcer Joe Petty would spend Sunday afternoons with the McGuires in their home after taping the coach’s television show.

“As we celebrate 100 years of Gamecock basketball this year, so many Gamecocks will think back to the many fine memories that were made with the McGuire family during their time at South Carolina,” Odom said.

McGuire’s teams at USC won 283 games in 16 seasons.

Visitation will be held Saturday 1-2:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the services to follow. Burial will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Memorial can be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.
