When I first hear of spurrier coming to the gamecocks I was understandable excited. At first I like many thought the hiring of Spurrier would make us instant contenders in the SEC and even on the national stage. After the first season it hit me like an epiphany, it will take 5 years for us to come to my before mentioned state. I then told my little brother who thinks we are gonna win it all every year, it will take 5 years to get there. Coach Spurriers system isnt the easiest to learn and as I figured he would have to make some major changes the coaching staff to become what we all ask Santa to give us. It just seems with the recent coaching hires and Spurriers recruits finally being upperclassmen it is time to shine. With this being the 4th year of Spurriers tenure in SC should I have changed it to a 4 year plan? I guess it all boils down to me being excited and for the first time ever THIS gamecock is gonna say it...Wait till next year!

well said cocknfire... with these new coaches, and with a still virtually young team, with only 6 or 7 major components gone due to graduation or eligability, its so exciting to see what is to be of our Gamecocks in 2008. I am excited about it just as you... if we have the type of year that we did this year, in the beginning, I can definately see us making it to a BCS bowl game. and if we can stop the 5 main components in our division, and beat Arky, LSU, and Ole Miss, we will be undefeated in conference playing for the SEC Title that we just can feel in our hands with every play. I am with you all the way. I cant wait to see what these new coaches bring to what is to be another exciting 2 to 3 years as a gamecock :) GO COCKS!

I think you're dead on with the 5 year idea. I said before the 2007 season started that if 2007 wasn't our year then it would have to be 2009. I hope I get proven wrong. What I forgot in my calculations about 2007 was that being Spurrier's third year he was going to lose many of the top notch guys leftovers from Lou's squad and that more true and RS freshment would have to play. I really think the combination of inexperience and injuries are what did us in during the back side of this past season. While that hurt us in 2007 I think it will pay off big in 2008 and 2009 because we know we have a bunch of young guy out there who are already starter material and they have two or three seasons ahead of them. That's one thing this program has always lacked and in the long run it will allow us to build enormous depth across the board.

Now if we can keep everyone around all 4 years, three if their Heisman quality, weve got great years ahead of us!!!

I agree with a lot of your points. I think where a lot of the Negative Nellie-ism comes from is when we were losing with Coach Holtz because of a few shortcomings, especially offensively, we felt Spurrier would come in and we would immediately improve 2 fold. We have improved in some areas, just not enough in all. I agree we have to see this thing through and 3 years is just not enough time to even think about grading Spurrier's potential for success.

Yeah. Guys who leave after their third (or second) season hurts. Our program just hasn't been built with enough depth to overcome those losses quickly. Losing Sidney hurt us in 2007 a lot more than I originally thought it would. However some players will continue to do what they think is best for themselves (not a bash, sometimes they really do need to go) so it is up to our coaching staff to build in that depth so the losses don't sting so much. I have confidence that SOS is doing just that.

definitely!!! it will be very exciting to watch all of these young players grow up and become stars. so many people don't realize that jared cook will just be a rising junior, which is exactly when calvin johnson became a big time wr. then you have to be getting rev'd up when you think about westley saunders having a year of experience under his belt as well as a full off-season of strength training with mark smith. he is going to be a monster next year.
and you must be going out of your mind when you start to try to name alllllllll of the potential star wr's we have, with some real game experience from last year, along with the redshirts and the true freshmen we will have in this class. there are so many stars waiting to happen in this group. we will not be wanting for guys to throw the ball to. adding even more excitement in the mix, is going to be watching steven garcia and chris smelley fight it out for the chance to fire it to all of those wr's. and don't be surprised if hillary gets more attention than would be expected of a freshman athletic qb. i think sos is starting to realize that athletic qb's are the order of the day in the sec now. with a ton of talented rb's, it wouldn't surprise me if maddox and baker become our leading backs. davis will have to earn his way back into the conversation as far as i'm concerned , after his late season lackluster performances. don't forget demarco's contributions at fullback. he can catch the ball out of the backfield, and might get a carry or two. i think next year will be the first year in the sos era that we have a solid ol in place before the season begins. i think sos will make an ultimatum for our ol coach to get it done or he will be. plus adding q. richardson and some of the other redshirt guys in there, we should have a good mix of talent, experience and depth.
that is a lot of exciting stuff to look forward to, and i didn't even mention all of the defensive excitement. wow!!!!

I will say it again( but maybe not on this board).
The 2005 team was a 3 or 4 win team with a GOOD coach. That team won 7 games, somehow. Outmanned all year.
The 2006 team was alittle better but maybe a 6 win team. They won 8 games.
We got spoiled. Myself included.
This years team was better but it did not show up in the w column. I have my opinions why this happenned but they are not message board material.
The 08 team should be even better.
Point is, the final records were good in 05 and 06 but it is not like this year was some drastic regretion.

Bingo. Next year it will be the six year plan. Garcia got a year under his belt we're ready to make a run at the SEC title.

I was thinking the same thing Willy, although I understand the sentiment of the original poster. My first "5 year plan" at USC was when Rex Enright was here and has been continuing ever since.
I don't have many 5 year plans left either.lol

Bottom line for me, this year showed me that Spurrier is not gonna be the guy to win the SEC for us. I don't know when/if we win the SEC, but it won't with Spurrier and or some other over the age of 60 coach. I'll get blasted for saying that, but come on, 6-6??? 10 years ago that would've seemed unfathomable for a Spurrier coached team (especially in his 3rd year). We can come up with as many excuses as people like, but all that matter to me are wins, and we cannot seem to do that.

So what will be an acceptable amount of wins for next season?..Im goin to say 8-9 prior to bowl game.

God how i hope we can win that many
Yeah 8 or 9 before the bowl game HAS to be the goal

So lets ditch Spurrier right now.
Then we can go get a offensive coordinator at one of the big schools or maybe from the NFL because by your logic they can come in right away and do a better job.
There is a team in Athens and in Gainesville that you can go support if you want to salivate over wins.

So basically, every great coach (B.Bowden, JoPa, Pete Carroll) who has a load of freshmen to play positions due to the fact that the verterans cant step up, and needed to fill those gaps that were left unattended, in the since that the vets either moved on or got injured or whatever, isnt allowed to have a down year? is that my taking from some of your thoughts?

Holtz left USC in shambles. He was a good coach, but never built a program anywhere. SOS will either build a program, or he won't. However, it is not fair to judge before 5 years.

You're a excuse maker. Mark Richt didn't make any excuses about youth, he takes responsibility and goes out and wins 10 games (and a BCS appearence) with a "young" team. Save the excuses for trailor park trash that are gullible. Some of us have been fans way too long to listen to that crap still. Wins>excuses

Don't be offended, but do you really know your Gamecock History? Think why I am asking this. It ain't hard at all. Say in 2003 we had the number 8 recruiting class...most people don't even know that...which is why I ain't all goggle eyed over last years class....until we actually do something with these classes they are just rankings..not wins. And for those that say, "well that class had thugs in it" or something of that nature....think about all the off field problems last year's class has already had....ain't that different at all. The only difference has been bowl wins....Holtz had 2 in 3 years and Spurrier has 1 in 3 years. Check mark to Lou baby.

I personally like lou holtz, was he the best coach that we ever had, no, was he the worst, no. I guess what I'm saying is that programs have ups and downs, we seem to have had a LOT of downs, but the one thing I have noticed, is it is only a game, does that mean that I don't want to win, absolutely not, I just understand that there are some things that are more important, take for instance my stepmom who has severe kidney failure, and sometimes can't even remember what she's doing, I would give up a Gamecock NC if it would make her better. That being said, we need to win one, so maybe I can bargain with the big man upstairs.

He is very good coach and I'm not saying either one is better than each other. When I was talking about recruits with one BCS offer I was talking about his last class. Like over half of the signees were had 1 major offer. So he didn't leave us with to much and his good players got kicked off the team for stealing, drugs, etc. Steve Spurriers first recruiting class he really didn't have too much time to judge the character of his recruits because he only had a couple months to recruit. Over half the players are off the team now. The other recruiting classes only has 1 or 2 players at the most not on the team anymore. We will see how good Spurrier does the next 3-4 years. He could win a SEC championship and/or BCS bowl. Or he could have mediocure years 6-7 wins. We shall see.
