Adams leads Gamecocks to 64-43 victory over Tigers
On Saturday, Demetress was a fortress.
University of South Carolina junior forward Demetress Adams governed the interior against rival Clemson, recording a double-double to lead the Gamecocks to a 64-43 victory in Littlejohn Coliseum.
They do not call Adams “D” for nothing. She protected the paint with five blocks, six steals and 10 defensive rebounds.
Adams blocked two shots and snagged two steals over the first 7 minutes of the contest, propelling the Gamecocks (9-3) to an early 11-0 lead.
Clemson (7-7) did not sink its first basket until the 12:07 mark, when freshman Kirstyn Wright dropped in a 3-pointer.
“I think our defense set a tone, especially in the first half,” said USC coach Susan Walvius. “To hold them scoreless in the first seven minutes was a very good job by ‘D’ and the starters. For our kids to go out and really get some stops, I was really proud of them.”
Staffed by Adams, senior center Ilona Burgova and senior forward Jessica Tolliver, the USC frontcourt overpowered the Tigers, scoring 38 points in the paint while limiting Clemson to only seven interior baskets.
Adams and Burgova each finished with 10 points, while Tolliver added five.
“We had a considerable size advantage,” said Walvius. “I thought our kids did a decent job taking advantage of that. We were able to rebound and feed inside a little bit and that balance helped us.”
Clemson converted only seven of its 30 first-half field goal attempts. Wright remedied Clemson’s shooting ailment somewhat, as she drilled two additional 3-pointers over the remainder of the first half. She finished with a team-high 14 points.
The Tigers closed the deficit to 15-10 by the 9:26 mark, but USC answered with a 13-3 run, paced by a pair of 3-pointers from Jordan Jones, who finished with a game-high 16 points.
The Gamecocks outscored the Tigers 8-4 over the final 2:30, extending the margin to 36-17 at halftime.
Clemson suffered two-minute droughts between each of their first three baskets of the second half, allowing USC to extend the lead to 49-24 with 11:15 to play.
Clemson’s Morganne Campbell ended the sporadic scoring, sparking a 7-1 spurt with two consecutive lay-ups. The Tigers cut the deficit to 49-30 with 8:02 to play, but USC responded with a 12-4 run. Although Clemson closed the game with a 6-0 spurt, the Gamecocks held for a 21-point win.
