Several notebook makers will make 4GB of RAM standard on their systems at the start of the new year, say companies in Taiwan producing the memory in question. A number of "top-tier" system builders, including Dell, HP, and Toshiba, will completely fill out the memory capacity of their portables as the cost of RAM drops to the point where 4GB becomes affordable: by the start of 2008, bulk prices for two 2GB sticks will cost less than $60, the suppliers note. This would account for less than six percent of the cost of a $1,000 portable computer where less memory would have taken up 10 percent of the cost in the past.

Specific computer models have not been named, though the extra memory is likely to be standard with higher-end models such as Dell's XPS gaming series, HP's Pavilion dv9000 line, and Toshiba's Satellite X205 gaming systems. 2GB of memory has become increasingly standard across most computers and is expected to quickly phase out 1GB as the baseline on lower-cost models in the near future.

However, most Windows PCs continue to run 32-bit versions of Windows, reducing the amount of memory visible to the OS compared to a 64-bit platform. The MacBook line is currently the only mainstream platform that is known to recognize the full amount without special modifications.

If THATS the case, I forsee a laptop upgrade in my immediate future. I got a Wal-Mart "Black Friday Special" HP laptop for Christmas 2 years ago, came with 512 MB of RAM. Slow...as...molasses.

But again, if this is true, I'll save up the money and get a high-end one.

I have 4GB in my desktop. You really do need that with a multicore processor and running even XP, much less Vista. Makes a noticeable difference.

oh yeah, my buddy Joey bumped up from 1 GB to 2 GB in his laptop, and he runs Vista. MUCH faster with just 2 gigs. Can't wait to see what 4 does

what viruses do you have???

Dual core and 2 GB RAM should be more than enough for XP and pretty decent with Vista.

READ THE FINE PRINT!

You will need to run 64bit to be able to use the 4GB right now. While 64bit is amazingly better, most software code is written for 32bit. It will not help anyone in the near future.

^^^ yep nothing but a marketing gimmick. The most I've seen a 32bit computer run is 3.2GB and that was with onboard video and sound. 32bit is 2^32 in memory addresses but those addresses are used by other things than RAM such as IRQs.
