USC self-reports 10 secondary violations

COLUMBIA — South Carolina reported 10 secondary rules violations from the final half of 2007, the school said Thursday through a release.
Additionally, USC said eight of its athletes tested positive for having marijuana in their systems. That was out of 438 tests.
Among the rules breaches, there were three Level I violations — those that are immediately submitted to the NCAA via the SEC office:
--On Sept. 15, USC reported that two former student-athletes received athletically related financial aid while they were fulfilling less than full-time class requirements.
--A month later, a student-athlete practiced beyond the permissible time period with her or his initial eligibility certification pending.
--On Nov. 13, a member of the swimming coaching staff had on-campus contact with a prospect during a no-contact recruiting period.
Of the reported Level II violations — those that are compiled yearly by the conference and then submitted to the NCAA office — only one directly pertained to the USC football team.
A member of the team's coaching staff made comments July 28 regarding a prospect before he'd signed a national letter of intent.
The men's basketball team's only mention came regarding "an impermissible snack" prior to its Nov. 15 practice.
In addition to the positive marijuana tests, 23 athletes tested positive for having prescription drugs. But each athlete proved he or she had a validated prescription for the medication.
Also, the school said it performed 36 tests for anabolic steroids and 167 tests for alcohol.
The NCAA conducted 20 independent drug tests. Those results, the school said, were all negative.

I have heard who 4 of the drug test culprits were and it surprised me... well, kinda.
Im just hoping that this doesnt lead to dismissals. '08 would be a rough year.

Sept. 15, a student-athlete practiced beyond the permissible time period with her or his initial eligibility certification pending.
This is a very serious voilation that could lead to the death penalty of our athletic department!
Seriously, doesn't the NCAA have something better to do??

So what if anything will the NCAA do to us? Are any of these guys 2nd or 3rd time offenders of the drug policy?

I wonder what the "impermissable snack" was that the basketball team had before the game was. I dont think it should have been reported because if I had to guess, it probably didnt help our performance.

These were self-reported violations, the NCAA didn't spend any time on this.

Yeah I realize that. My point was some of these "infractions" are so freaking minor. Some of the NCAA rules are just so petty.

Every year we seem to report 10 or more violations. If we can't play fair and by the rules than maybe we have bigger problems than sucking. I mean, I love the team, but come on.

One must venture into the NCAA rulebook for a proper definition of the elusive impermissible snack. I went to the trouble for all of you:
IMPERMISSIBLE SNACK (ĭm'pər-mĭs'ə-bəl snak)
adjective
1. a snack not permitted; "impermissible pot brownies" [ant: allowable pot brownies]
2. a snack that is not allowable, e.g., a late-night stop at the Playboy Mansion for milk and cookies is not allowable under article XI, section LVXI, subsection MCMXLVIII, title IX, paragraph D, sentence 36-DD.
What can you say? Boys will be boys...

It's a Catch-22. Either we report them and the NCAA doesn't do anything....or the NCAA finds out about them and slaps you big time.

yeah, its alot better to just admit to them.

Practicing outside the permissible practice period isn't minor. Contact with recruits during off-limit periods isn't minor. If clumsux had practiced when they weren't supposed to, when we couldn't...or if they'd been contacting one of our recruits when they weren't supposed to...Everyone on here would be screaming their heads off. Some rules do seem silly, but minor infractions when open and up front about disclosing them, are treated as minor. Also, intent plays a big part in the outcome too.

Gosh, I knew we shouldn't have been feeding our basketball team pot brownies. Only led to more trouble...
