Wisconsin

Offense:While offensive coordinator Paul Chryst has opened up the Badgers' passing attack since Bret Bielema took over as head coach prior to the 2006 season, this is still Wisconsin and it's still about bludgeoning defenses with the run. Between sophomore P.J. Hill, sophomore Lance Smith and fast-rising true freshman Zach Brown, the Badgers will have three tailbacks ready to punish Tennessee's average defense. Fifth-year senior Tyler Donovan performed solidly in his first full year as the starter. He finished fourth in the Big Ten in pass efficiency and showed toughness when he had to run, but his best idea is to get the ball into the hands of superb tight end Travis Beckum and NFL prospect split end Paul Hubbard.
Defense: Wisconsin's 4-3 defense surrendered at least 31 points in half of its regular-season games. That's not the formula that worked so well when the Badgers won 12 games in 2006, but yet they looked better down the stretch. Cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu can hang with anyone in the game, while safety Shane Carter endured some growing pains yet still led the Big Ten with seven interceptions. Outside linebackers Jonathan Casillas and DeAndre Levy are playmakers who endured uneven starts but came on late. The injury-plagued defensive line is led by All-Big Ten second-teamer Matt Shaughnessy, who had 14 solo tackles for loss. Redshirt freshman Kirk DeCremer added 5.5 sacks in limited snaps, but he and Shaughnessy will be challenged by the nation's No. 1 offensive line in terms of sacks allowed (four in 13 games).

Tennessee

Offense: Led by senior QB Erik Ainge and a line that has allowed only four sacks, Tennessee has averaged nearly 35 points per game. That's why it was so shocking that Ainge killed the team's chances of a Sugar Bowl bid with two awful interceptions in the fourth quarter against LSU. One would think with a month to get over it, he will deliver a performance more in tune with a senior season that has featured a 29-to-10 TD-interception ratio. But the team's ultimate success might depend on generating a ground game to give the offense the balance it needs.
Defense: For all its faults during the season, this unit actually deserved better against LSU. Although the Vols hacked up 462 total yards, they toughened up in the red zone and gave up only 13 points. Simplified schemes over the season's second half, along with the development of a young secondary and the front four, has helped UT improve on defense. LBs Jerod Mayo, Ryan Karl and Rico McCoy have starred down the stretch, although Karl might not play in the bowl game.

Tennessee (9-4) vs. Wisconsin (9-3)

Jan. 1st, 11:00 a.m. ET, ESPN
Tennessee will win if... it stuffs the run. Wisconsin isn't the pure ground attack team is has a reputation for being, but everything revolves around pounding the ball. The Badgers ran for fewer than 150 yards in three games this season, and it happened to be three games they lost being held to 127 yards by Illinois, 87 by Penn State, and 12 against Ohio State. While the Illini, Nittany Lions and Buckeyes did a fantastic job of stopping the Badger backs, the net numbers also came from generating sacks. Tennessee's defensive line has been a bit of a disappointment, especially when it comes to getting into the backfield, but the Wisconsin line will give up sacks and has trouble against the more athletic speed rushers. If the Tennessee defensive line has a great game, Wisconsin will be in big trouble.
Wisconsin will win if... it wins the wars in the trenches. Controlling the game with the running game, especially into the second half, is a must, but just as important will be to get to QB Erik Ainge and make him hustle his throws. That'll be easier said than done against a Tennessee offensive line that was the best in the nation in sacks allowed giving up a mere four, but as LSU showed in the SEC Championship, just getting close to Ainge might be good enough. Ainge is terrific at getting the ball out of his hands in a hurry and avoiding the sack, and while he'll be happy to throw the ball away when needed, he'll also occasionally try to make a pass or two that isn't there. Usually he gets away with it, but the Badger corners are too talented to let too many mistakes get by them.

What will happen: This will be the Badger team everyone was thinking it would be at the beginning of the year. Wisconsin has problems with spread offense and running quarterbacks. Facing Florida would've been a real problem, but Tennessee's attack is a near-perfect matchup for the Badger D. Tennessee's defense will force more than its share of three and outs, but Wisconsin will come up with one of its crispest games of the year and give the Big Ten a major feather in its cap.

Line: Tennessee -3.5... CFN Prediction: Wisconsin 24 ... Tennessee 20

SEC beats Big 10. I think Erik Ainge will be playing to bring up his stock and there are very good RB's.

I like Tennessee's chances more when they have some time to prepare for a game. After their bye-week, UT took UGA to the whipping shed. Ainge seems to be erratic when he has to improvise on the fly, but when he's had time to prepare the gameplan, he usually plays well. Plus, UT's D showed some improvement down the stretch. I bet on UT....
